Ok, I think it's time to close this thread..

Grow the fuck up. Can't you handle opinions from anonymous strangers on the internet that differ from yours?

And if you're gonna quote wikipedia, find the correct page.

Yeah, it could effortlessly push some textured 3D geometry in a much more casual way than most PCs and previous consoles could, but that was only thanks to the 3D acceleration hardware (which was virtually unheard of on a home console or PC until then), which was also severely limited by low memory, low resolution textures, low field depth ("popping" was very common in practically all games), very approximate and sloppy rendering (the seams between textures looked like a tutti-frutti patchwork, texture transformations and shading looked like crap etc.) and in general it had a very dirty and grainy look. But hey, "3D was what people wanted" (?).

As a former Playstation developer I can confirm all this.
The main reason stuff looked like shit on the playstation was that the "3D" acceleration had no concept of depth whatsoever. No depth buffer and no perspective correct texture mapping were available. It also required transforming everything in software with specialized libraries that came with the SDK.

Add to that 1MB of video RAM, including the two screen buffers and a measly 2 MB of user RAM and it should be clear that this thing was extremely limited.

And porting from and to such a weird system you can imagine how much compromises had to be made - not just for Doom.

But at least it was programmable, something that can't be said of its successor...

Do you guys hear an inner voice, like a narrator, whenever you read a thread? This is one of those threads where I hear the OP's narration being screamed at me by a middle schooler with spiky hair. Good for a guffaw.

Post Hell Thread Revealed (funny thing, that's a good HR triquel's name).

it doesn't sucks. At least because of color sectors and much more creepy atmosphere.

In that case, you would be dissapointed, if you saw a picture of me.

BTW, there's a "post a picture of yourself!" thread if you wish to go on any further. .

Kaiser and I found one critical and almost obvious optimization that would have bought PSX Doom a significantly higher amount of VRAM available, and would have been dead simple to apply...

In P_SpawnMapThing, a thing's first state tics are randomized for the sole purpose of having all animated objects and dancing monsters not be on the same frame (which while kind of funny looking, is not really that big of a deal).

Because of this, PSX can in a single scene have 3 different barrel and 4 different potion sprites loaded into VRAM *just because* of this randomization. If all decor objects were displaying the same frame, only that frame would be loaded. This applies to stuff like the BFG fog too so, not randomizing those frames would have made the dreaded "TEXTURE CACHE OVERFLOW" error nearly non-existent.

I guess being able to visualize the VRAM layout like you can in an emulator now is not a luxury they had or they'd have nailed that.

I'm interested in seeing how long this thread lives. .

Anyhow...the only aspect of PSX Doom that I loved more than the original is the sound effects, soundtrack, and lighting.

Well my morning dump was almost entertaining... almost.

One funny comment here and that's only because I have a dark sense of humor.

If you're still figuring out how to close it just go to "Admin Options" on the bottom of the page and select "Open / Close Thread" from the drop down and then just simply press "Go".

Using Twitch chat culture sarcasm emotes on an actual forum is a bad idea for the simple fact that Twitch chat is for throwaway stream of consciousness banter that someone can go "heh" and forget in 10 seconds. An actual forum is a permanent place for discussion and people will hold you to what you say since you have a practically infinite amount of time to think things through before you start your thread. Doing what you did here is make a shitpost that has no morale or message. Even if you disliked PSX Doom for real, there's two whole threads you could have dumped that (Confessional Booth and Controversial Opinions).
