DOOM is getting ripped and torn by negative Steam reviews

So i guess pentagrams, cults, human sacrifices, bloody corridors, demons , and hell itself isnt hellish enough for you. Whst youre basically saying is that you want the same type of marines that are similar to the aliens colonial marines with space helmets which basically what the origibal doonguy was designed from. And not the fully armored marines and security personel that is stationed on a very hostile barren planet which has the chance to either suffocate you and fill your lungs with radioactive dust from exposure to the sun not to mention the weapons testing in that place. I mean what are the odds of going crazy in isolation with a bunch of heavy weaponry right?

Honesty, I think an exact remake of the original aesthetics would have served the series better imho.

I don't know man, I don't think it's possible to get any closer than what we see in Infernal. The art style in that map is spot on.

It would have, but this is a reinterpretation of the original aesthetics. I think they are trying to make something that feels like the original. I mean a lot of the guys at id Software working on the new Doom have played the old Doom non-stop to get a feel for the vibe.

So yeah... =)

I don't know if this was a graphical thing to make the game run better on consoles or if it a was deliberate aesthetic choice, but there were some piles of skulls that looked melted together that made it look so perfect to doom

Aesthetically, I think Infernal looks the best so far compared to the sort of sameness of Heatwave.

A remake of the aesthetics is the exact problem, everyone has their own idea in their brain what an HD imp may look like.

And let's be honest here, any 3D models of the original imp we've seen look fucking retarded.

Animations also play a MAJOR role, think of how choppy the animations are in the originals, now try and interpret those in a nice smooth, realistic (or hell even cartoony) animation.

Ya I think he meant the gigor, dirty space ship 70's feel, mixed with gothic bricks. not so much the monsters. For the tech part it would be cool to see that again but as for hell, I liked the look of doom 3's hell alot. Mix that with some of the skin stuff and hell ya.

Doom 3's hell just felt like I was in a volcano. I like fire and brimstone but abstract, nightmarish cathedrals and orgasmic walls that look like brains is something that stood Doom's hell apart from the rest. Sandy obviously knew something about Dante's Inferno when designing his maps.

Oh I see, sorry. I somewhat agree, I want to see hell progress from doom 3 style to just weird as fuck by the end. That'd be awesome.

I actually have a very convincing argument with which to counter your suspicion, but then I'd be completely jinxing the entire thing.

I'm still wondering how big a part the pinata drops were in the making of the levels. Did they make the levels at least similar in some feeling to the classic doom games (with the pinata drops being added in along side it), or did they focus more on using the pinata drops to keep the player in combat (and less of searching for it in the level) with the levels maybe showing that focus in some way.

Doom II RPG is the closest to a canon high res Imp in the classic style.

I think the levels look cool. But the halo look of the armor spoils in, I think.

I think that a photo realistic imp that is faithful to the original look is possible.

EDIT:

Besides, they were able to get it right for the revenant.

EDIT 2:

I think Imps look cool in Doom, the main complaint is the lame armor choices.

Most of the monsters are well made. Though I dislike the cyber demon, and I wish they went with the Minotaur style for the Hell knights.

The generic versions of the guns are good. However, the custom colors are horribly over-saturated. If this could give it textures that don't look like they were made solely with the bucket tool in MS paint, that would be awesome.

The pick-ups are too obnoxious looking, and large.

Like I said before, the levels are cool looking. They just need to give the armor a more traditional doom look. I just hate those helmets; one picture looks like a blatant rip off of that ninja from metal gear solid.

I wonder what Id software will do with this type of feedback they are receiving. How much could they be expected to change prior to the release?

EDIT:

I think the overall complaint with the way it looks in regards to armor, is that its too sporty looking, instead of gritty. Especially with the those colors.

EDIT 2:

A major plus I give the game is that I didn't experience performance issues and I had no trouble finding a match. I consider this a big deal nowadays, compared to other high profile releases.

I actually sort of like the Cyberdemon in some ways. He does look sort of menacing, and I find the horns to be rather neat. Though I don't think it really mixes with how wide he is along with the crunchy rock looking exoskeleton (or skin if that is what it is) that he has.

I agree on some of the power ups. The haste/quad damage ones seem fine, and even the demon rune seems rather fine in its size. For some of the others though (not counting the armor shards) did they actually have a mix of glowy outline along with being generally bright to begin with (or at least that is what it seemed like to me)?

I'm mixed about the armor, some of the ones seen in the beta had pieces on them that had some semblance of halo, while others look rather different but sort of weird. I'm actually hoping they will have Doom Guy's armor as a armor option in mp (classic or 2016 version).

Not sure about feedback, maybe Certain Affinity will listen to some of it.

The specifics about WHY people don't like the game are noteworthy, but not the most important thing here.

As of the writing of this post, the barrage of negative reviews have been out for 5 days, and yet Bethesda/ID still have not said A SINGLE WORD addressing this.

This has left the fans in frustrating speculation as to why they made the game this way, and what they might do about it.

Furthermore, a team working on a AAA title like this should have been aware that it's fans ARE NOT the same people playing Halo and COD, and often dislike both of those games. It was therefore a horrible move to hire the people that made those games to work on Doom.

I can live with the fact that the game is different than the others, I appreciate progress and change, but I am frustrated at the team for not understanding their fans, and even more so for not addressing the fans.

Well Certain Affinity had a hand in the MP, so that is likely a major reasons for similarities the mp had in various aspects to those two games.

Also the mp was likely made the way it was so the game didn't end up with only a minor amount of sales and people playing it compared to what was likely spent into making it (even if the people playing it would have been fans that liked that style).

Maybe they think it'll just blow over.

Actually I just reviewed Steam, and the ratings on Doom were waaay worse than any other title they have ever released. The next-worst game is about 70%, roughly twice as positive as Doom.

I'm sure they knew that it would be impossible to please everyone, but they certainly did not expect it to be nearly this bad, or they would not have spent so much money developing it. Therefore, it stands to reason that there is a good chance that they will seriously overhaul Doom.

There is still hope!

Maybe.

Worst case scenario that likely wouldn't ever happen at this point is Zenimax/Bethesda saw the reviews and decided it was best to cancel Doom 4 and and reorganize id so they work on something else. But they are likely banking on the SP actually doing way better than the MP that they may not really care to much about the general view on the MP.

Also I'm beginning to think that the reason they have not yet commented is because they are in a bit of shock over how negative the reviews were. There's no nice way for management to look at this, the fact of the matter is they just wasted millions of dollars. They're probably taking so long because they're deciding on whether or not to pivot and re-do the entire game.

I don't have anything to substantiate this, it's just a hunch.

Granted, a large chunk of the reviews I saw on steam seemed like they cared more about the MP doing well than the SP (if them being done with the game purely due to the beta was anything to take note of).

Also why redo the whole game? MP/the limited beta wasn't the whole game like a large chunk of the steam reviews seems to think.

Bethesda doesn't want to attract more negativity where there is none. The huge marketing campaign is in full swing. I work in Manhattan and I can tell you there's DOOM billboards/banners on buildings, buses, subways, and taxi cabs. They don't want to stop the train.

Could be, but I doubt they would cancel the game all-together. The most financially beneficial option I can think of would be to re-do the MP, and revise the SP accordingly.

No matter what, they already have a lot of code to work with, it would make sense to just make the changes people are asking for. If they pull the plug all together, they'll REALLY piss off the community. It would be a PR nightmare to be labelled as the company that killed Doom 1 month from release.

Well it's sort of hard to say they should revise SP based on a beta of a mp that Certain Affinity had a hand in making. The best thing I see for mp at this point would just to have two separate modes (one that is a more competitive one that is more arena combat based, and one that sort of keeps what they have now but also balanced better and at least tweaked some so it doesn't seem so average).

Oh of course, but this marketing campaign was launched before the beta. Even if they delay the release, this marketing campaign will not be a complete waste, just a huge tease.

Everything is a numbers game, so here's what I suspect they're thinking:

Revise game:
Marketing: 50% waste (because of delaying)
Development: 30% waste (because of re-coding)

Launch game as-is:
Up to 65% sales lost

So it's anybody's guess. All I can say is I'm glad I'm not responsible for making the decisions they did, because quite a few people are having a really bad week over there :/
