what are your thoughts on the Demons of DooM '16?

One just has to love the UAC. From the GameStop footage:

"Look, we found a big ass demon...what should we do with it? ADD WEAPONS AND STUFF!"

I mainly comment their looks, because their behaviour yet has to be experienced.

Possessed - cool, scary mutant freaks, and a welcome break from the omnipresent regular zombie theme you have seen in so many games.

Possessed Soldier - mixed feelings on this one. On the one hand I love Strogg designs, on the other hand I think they should be kept in the Quake universe. But why not, they look great and fit into the Doom bestiary.

Hell Razer - awsome!

Pinky demon - don't like it, too cartoonish, liked the Doom 3 incarnation much better.

Lost Soul - good.

Imp - the overall slim and agile appearance fits their role well. At first I didn't like the Tyranid style face of the redesigned version, but it grew on me.

Hellknight - perfect, and I am glad the game pays homage to Doom 3.

Baron of Hell - awsome, a seamless blend of Doom 3 design and classic horns-and-hoofs style.

Revenant - good, took the previous designs and updated it.

Cacodemon - perfect.

Mancubus - I like it, but nothing beats the cthulhuoid beasts from Doom 3. Doom 3 Mancubus with the details and color scheme of the new Mancubus would be perfect for me.

Archvile - awsome Angel of Death style! I am glad they tried a new design, even if the old one wasn't bad at all.

Cyberdemon - it's good, except those stupid antlers.

I know this has been gone over many times, but I'm not sure if the classic designs (Pinky, Baron) blend well with the ones that look more like their Doom 3 incarnations (Hell knight). They all look fantastic in their own right, but I get the impression that id are trying to please everyone here. It's a nitpick that I'll overlook when I'm playing the game, I just wish there was more artistic parity in the monster designs.

There is footage of a Hellknight actually throwing a projectile? Where, gotta see this!

I know what you mean, but I think it works quite well. IMO the Imp is the best example of the blending: the overall shape is based on the slender Doom 3 appearance, but it has become a slightly more comic book like (a la Todd McFarlane) look. And there is a persistent "Doom 2016" look on most demons, with the bone-like protrusions.

it would be so awesome if all the demons would look as horrifying and sinister as the lost soul

I know doom is no super serious demon slaughtering game, it's just my personal preference, one of the reasons I like most of the doom 3 demons so much

I think the Doom 2016 have a better balance of aesthetics than Doom 3 did. Doom 3 came off as trying a little too hard to be serious and monsterish and they just come off as bland and forgettable. The Classic Doom designs are more memorable. Which is going to stick in your head more, this?

Or this?

I like the more exaggerated and flashy Classic style, they look intimidating but, at the same time, the vibrant color makes them memorable.

the first one, because it scared the shit out of me several times

the new pinky looks like it got ripped out of a cartoon - the armored one is kinda ok

btw your doom 3 pinky pic isn't even from the singleplayer, it was just put into a room without lighting and anything

Like I said, Doom 3's pinky is better and more memorable. It combines alien horror with dog-like brutality.

The new pinky on the other hand just looks like a marshmallow crab Pokemon. I' ll call him Pinkemon.

Because, if you saw one of them charging at you in real life, I'm sure you wouldn't crap your pants right? Because the spikes, sharp carnivore teeth, the big burly build, and the piercing yellow eyes scream non-lethal.

The spikes and teeth scream danger, while the cherry and strawberry marshmallow surface screams tasty :)

You're really going to use that as an argument? Because the Doom 3 Pinky has that kind of dull brown color that makes it look like coffee ice-cream.

With Doom '16, we get the best of every release. id, for all the odd little issues they've overlooked in the new game, really came through with enemy design. There's a genuine attempt to make them feel as though they belong to the same universe, and yet each one looks distinctive. In particular, I like how the imp has this fleshy, more delicate looking skin, and a somewhat insectoid appearance, while the demon is dinosaur-like, especially with the tail, which I think is absolutely necessary to give the character a sense of stability to its weighty upper half.

The demon, mancubus, cacodemon and cyberdemon are a bit more cartoonish than the others, and this only bugs me because the imp, some of the possessed, hell knight and lost souls look genuinely horrifying, which makes me want all of the baddies to be horrifying. Despite that wish not being fulfilled, every enemy design is very strong, and a recent image I saw of the cyberdemon shows a bit more of a palette going on, which helps distinguish between its different segments more easily, and I like that.

I haven't really seen much of the archvile yet. I'd like to see some nice shots of it so I can compare and contrast.

Ya I feel alot of the monster design was very "Penile" in Doom 3, mabie it was an attempt to be more "Gigory" as alot of his work was the same? I really like the new demon and while it dosn't covey the same feelings the original gave me He looks really cool.

Holy shit look at the pinkies eye glow, thats fucking bad ass. Ya the new archville is neat, I was never partial to the original design personally, it always felt off compaired to the other monsters to me.

The sprite was cool but, when you see what they used for the base, it looks like a hideous generic alien. I'm actually kind of digging the new look. Between the teleporting and fire magic, they seem to be playing up the wizard aspect of the Archvile.

Wow they could actually pass for an Archvile if you didn't know any better

Buuuut...coffee ice-cream is a bit more adult than strawberry marshmallow.

It's worth noting that the "Demon" seems to be officially called the "Pinky" in this game, which makes sense.

I love the new demons but it has mostly to do with their behaviors. For example I love how most monsters have at least two different attacks.

Imp:
arc fireball
straight fireball (charge)
melee (duh)

Hellknight:
Hulk smash (both hands)
Ground pound (single hand left and right)
Hook (left and right)
Backhand (left and right)

Mancubus:
Normal projectiles
Flamethrower
AOE groundpound

"Chaingunner":
Short salvo
Charged projectile (homing I think)

I also love how most monsters have a "taunt"

Hellknight: does a hulk roar (arms wide, chest flared, head back)
Revenant: screams at you
"Shotgunner": raises his gun straight into the air in a pumping motion

These create lovely little moments of opportunity on top of giving all the monsters character.

All the monsters have lovely windups and recovery patterns. The chaingunners raise their guns, the hellknights crouch before their hulk smash, the revenant shows laser pointers before firing etc.

All monsters seem to be able to be "melee baited" just as they were in the old days. This was pretty prevalent in Hugo's single player playthroughs. Even the Mancubus could be melee baited. After his AOE it has to recharge and it will try to swing at you if you are too close. The "Shotgunners" will try to bash you with their energy shield, thereby raising it so much they expose themselves. Absolutely lovely stuff.

The only thing I hope is that we have not seen the entire enemy roster yet and that there are still some nice surprises waiting for us in the full game. :3

And while I could write some notes about the appearance of the lost souls and the pinky I am certain their design will grow on me. Its the gameplay that counts. And I love that a)pinkie charges can be jumped over b)they will get dazed if they miss you but hit something else instead c)they are armored at the front but not at the back.
