Could you live without multiplayer?

I can't live without multiplayer. FPS without multiplayer is like alcohol free beer. :>

Multiplayer is what it is.
I think they could've opted to include a stripped down "classic" bare-bones DM mode that keeps the spirit of 1993 alive for the diehards.
The CoD/Halo/Quake fusion is geared for modernity and the masses.

DOOM was more of a SP game than a MP game.

MP was always an extra thing when it comes to DOOM plus all the iconic things about it all come from SP examples being the demons and the doom guy himself as well as user created content aka mods which are usually for SP too. It also always had more effort put in it than MP.

Doom 3's focus was definitely in the singleplayer department, and the original Doom multiplayer didn't change weapon or player values, instead adding in spawns for additional things and just letting people go to town in the pre-existing singleplayer maps.

Deathmatch was more of a fun new thing, than a significant focus, arguably.

Despite the entire game being built with multiplayer in mind? Remember: Every map can be played in 4 player co-op and Deathmatch, with necessary layouts and items to accommodate. It should be noted that multiplayer was one of the few things from the Doom bible to survive, and was tested throughout the lifetime of the game.

Yes. If Doom 4 didn't have multiplayer, I wouldn't care. If I want an arena shooter, I want one that does it right. Frankly I'm expecting the new Unreal Tournament to stomp and walk all over Doom 4's Multiplayer. And frankly I'm more hyped up for the new Unreal Tournament than Doom 4 because the Pre Alpha of UT doesn't disappoint, and the final version can only get better. I'm not expecting anything from Doom 4, other than a few hours of enjoyment.

If I want to play an Id software multiplayer shooter, I'll play Quake live.

I think snapmap will make multiplayer great. Someone will customise the multiplayer experience without loadouts, custom speed, no grenades, no melee etc and that may become a "competitive"standard. The current default settings are pretty rubbish. Loads can be done with snapmap and hopefully its truely taken advantage of

MP has always been secondary in the Doom franchise. The exception was of course community-driven, and it might be again.

I could live without it, but fortunately the MP turned out pretty good, so it's fun to jump in and put a few rounds down.
