Doom hitting 200 FPS @ 1080p using GTX 1080 w/ Vulkan

200 FPS? We're past the point of the limitations of the human eye. It's actually a little nauseating to watch. But maybe that's just the flu speaking.

From the sounds of it they are still working pretty hard on the game so this probably explains the reason why they sent out 0 review copies - got to get that day 1 patch installed first.

Glad this video is receiving a positive response from gamers, even neogaf are liking what they see.

Id is clearly showing where their roots lie with regards to tech and making sure the mistakes with RAGE PC launch are not repeated.

I wish people would stop trying to say this, it's flat out wrong.

This particular video might be nauseating to you because of the FOV, though.

The video itself is only displaying 60 FPS as well, no matter what the game was running at.

It's just a different API, like OpenGL or Direct 3D (the two main ones at the moment). Vulkan is essentially the successor to OpenGL which has become a bit bloated and not very well supported in the last decade or so. It supposedly runs better than OpenGL and D3D due to lower overheads and generally more efficiency - especially in utilising multithreaded hardware better. Yes, Vulkan is supported on the GTX 900 series, so hopefully we'll see some extra performance once the Vulkan support patch hits. (A little after release, according to Marty in the video).

Another thing to note, and please someone correct me if I'm wrong but Vulkan is Open Standard whereas Direct 3D is Proprietary

I tried loading a screencap from that video into a photo-panorama program to try and estimate the FOV used. It came up with:

Horizontal: 90
Vertical: 60

Who knows how accurate that is though. Here's a screencap with the picture rotated so the player is looking straight down though, for no reason.

It's really hard to tell, but the thing is a lot of games like to alter the FOV for these kinds of events, clearly him stomping the ground like that is a triggered event (we've seen it a few times already), same thing with him opening the vent. In my previous experience, even with a higher FOV these kinds of events sort of zoom in/out to alter the player's mood a bit, or to give a sense of momentum.

The actual gameplay will be nowhere near that fast. Either they've suped it up just for that demonstration, or the guy behind the PC isn't actually playing and it's one of those demos in which the speed is frame rate-dependent. The Crysis benchmarks are the same way (click here for an example).

Did you even watch it? The first 1.5 minutes was played at a 60FPS cap. Also, there is an actual dude playing the game in the video, clearly visible. If I recall, the Crysis benchmark was just a camera panning through the map.

This isn't a benchmark, this is just gameplay on an extremely high-end machine.

Yeah, it's just suped up for that demo them. Very odd...

EDIT: I'd also like to add that there ARE runes you can get that increase your movement speed, but I can't possibly see them increasing it by THAT much. If they did, how would console players even cope? The speed we're seeing here is ridiculous. I can't imagine trying to manage something like this with a controller.

Why is it very odd? None of us have seen this FOV before, none of us have seen single player on keyboard + mouse before, dude was gets meleed once by an Imp and is put down 20+ HP. He clearly was playing on a hard difficulty.

Not to mention all the sounds didn't seem sped up, all the particle effects didn't seem sped up, weapon fire rates and general animations were basically all the same.

He's probably decked out with hack modules + the FOV + the odd angle this was recorded at.

Yeah, it could be a combination of those things as well. FOV doesn't increase the sense of speed nearly that much, though--the player is definitely just moving faster, period. There have to be other things going on (like maybe a combination of runes we haven't yet seen in action)?

the gameplay is not 'sped up' and your insinuation that the footage is somehow not genuine is totally asinine.

This.

Well we know there is a rune that speeds you up after a glory kill, we know FOV does actually alter the sense of speed (seriously, open up Quake and alter the FOV and see for yourself), plus, there was haste. Besides, people have been bitching about the speed, maybe they actually sped it up.

To add to the equation, that guy playing was looking all over the place like a squirrel.

We'll see when the game comes out this Friday, I guess. There's been an awful lot of gameplay footage released on sites like IGN and Gamespot, though, and skimming through those videos, the speed isn't even half as fast as what we're seeing here.

I find your lack of faith...... disturbing.

The new Doom will be fast-paced, badass, and I can't wait for it quite frankly! =D

This footage looks amazing!!!

Easily Game of the Year 2016 for me. :3

I understand why you're skeptical, I guess none of us can actually prove anything. We shall see! Less than a week away!

There's nothing wrong with being skeptical about Doom until we actually get to play it ourselves. I've always held a positive attitude about Doom 2016, I think we'll get a solid game. My only real concern is about bugs and glitches within the game.

This is a clear example of how player skill greatly effects our perception of the "speed" of a game. Almost all the previous gameplay footage was of the Art Director (Hugo Martin) playing on lower skill levels with a gamepad using the lowest possible FOV and constantly Glory Killing whenever he got the chance. Also, keep in mind that player movement varies on an analog stick, so movement wouldn't be quite as fast as having a constant max walk speed as would be the case with WASD on a keyboard.

It would be like watching my little sister play Super Mario Bros. and coming to the conclusion that the game is terribly slow because she wasn't holding down the run button, couldn't utilize her momentum properly, and had to stop and wait around for enemies because she was unfamiliar with their behavior.

Even with this insane shooting with almost none glory kills performed there's insane amount of ammo for every weapon all the time...never run out of ammo. And here rise the same old question wich I had with Rage and abomination called doom 3 BFG....whats the point of using different weapons???....just fucking fire BFG or spam rockets or gauss. This video showed a complete illusion that we actually need different weapons to survive...NO WE DON'T! But of course how dear I point at such a big possible flaw of this game!

He just wants the game to fail so he can be right. It's the same mentality of doomsday conspiracy theorists.

Hah....Oh god! Amasing predictablity!!! It's just easier this way.. yes mate? To give such an incredibly "thoughtfull" answer on my analysis of a very important element of the game.
