They probably just haven't played in a while, probably playing other games or just living out their daily lives. It's not like the Teens React video where one of them wasn't sure if the armor was a bad guy or not.

I agree, not everyone has to be some kind of expert at Doom. As long as they're playing and appreciating Doom, that's what counts in my opinion.

they probably find it more convenient and relaxing to play a game on a big TV screen, rather than huddle up towards a computer screen. James particularly seems like more of a console person too, Mike's done some PC gaming with another friend though i believe. let them play the game however they want, they're having fun with it. what more can you ask for?

I used to be really into AVGN and Cinemassacre many years ago and I'm very sure James (and Mike from the look of things) is an extremely casual console video game player with his true passion being films and film making. His knowledge of games ends around the N64 era and he doesn't seem to follow the modern game industry too much, complaining about things that have been the norm for nearly a decade like having to download game and console updates.
Now, if you want to see James be hardcore about something then by all means go to the Cinemassacre website and listen to his encyclopaedic knowledge of horror movies.

MrSkeltal, you do realize that's a character don't you? AVGN is the one that doesn't know about modern stuff because his mind is in the past. James himself is obviously someone who keeps up with the times.

I'm talking about James as a person from his non-AVGN material. He's rather oblivious about things that are now the norm in video games, and from watching the average James & Mike episode you can tell he has a very casual approach towards the medium. Which is why it's pretty dumb to complain about them not playing Doom "as it should be played with keyboard and mouse." They don't care.

Which is why my gaming rig is down the side of my armchair - one arm supports the keyboard, the other the mouse. Whoever said big screen gaming and precise control were mutually exclusive? ;)

I enjoy the J&M vids as a whole, but I thought it was funny that James spent much of the video calling out the metal samples in Bobby Prince's music.

He's "hardcore" in terms of overall games but he probably doesn't sit down and play Doom all the time, especially with all the other crap he has to do and probably other things he also enjoys playing. He probably hasn't played Doom in quite a while.

Nobody should care. Doom has supported keyboard, mouse, keyboard+mouse, and joystick in the DOS releases. You pick whatever one feels more comfortable to you. Unless you're playing some console version, and then you're stuck with its controller anyway.
If they're doing DM game, that's a bit different because you can't control the difficulty like you can in SP. Still, if everyone uses same controller, or the most skilled player(s) uses only keyboard or joystick as a handicap (like in Go, the boardgame) then it's fine.

That would break the show format. J&M is virtually always the two on Mike's couch, and I've never seen a PC hooked up to Mike's big screen. Maybe it doesn't seem like a big deal, and they probably could get away with a "different" episode once, but continuity in the format is important for web series in general.

Here's a question for you, who honestly gives a rat's ass anyway? They're obviously playing Doom in the oldschool style, no mouse aim, so a controller vs a mouse isn't going to make the slightest bit of difference. It's not like Doom was set up as a modern fps where mouse control actually matters all that much. Sorry to be blunt but I'm just asking. XD

i think the answer to that question is that this is a Doom forum and not playing the Messiah of video-gaming the correct way is blasphemy and a major crime to the religion of Shooting Shit, and anyone not playing it on a PC, with mouse and keyboard, deserves to be stoned to death.

It's like some kind of insider's only club where anybody who isn't pro at the game is supposed to be considered beneath us or something. That's not exactly a good way to get more people into the games.

These guys are just really bad at 3D exploration games. Remember the Indy one? That one almost made me quit watching James & Mike altogether it was just so lazy. This one's OK, at least they have praise for the game in addition to some (however much the fanboy in me wants to say no) valid criticism. Despite the fact they're not very good at it, they still like it ;)

yeah, i hated that Infernal Machine video too, mostly because i actually really liked the game. way tighter controls and less frustration than the classic Tomb Raider games, and it had a really good adventure-feel to it, even though it might not be much special. i'm not sure how they could forget to even bother looking into your inventory-screen for that antidote kit you actually have at the beginning, and that snake bites are poisonous.

this one's better, though i'd kind of chalk up some of their suckage to the N64 controller. that thing is horrendous and is probably not very fun playing the game with. you'd think they'd have at least SOME knowledge of strafing in the game though, especially because they loved the game back then.

Same here. But in their defence, that part does suck even when you know you're supposed to stand on the flashing squares(mainly because of that last one).

Perhaps, it's for the response time mainly. I'm awful using gamepads for shooters (except SHMUPs).
