DAZZER Posted September 9, 2016 For sure Erik Alm Scythe 2 is unbeaten in detail and classic gameplay to this day (my opinion) a shame he isnt mapping anymore :c 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

I think he is working on releasing episodes for his Scythe-X project. With the amount of detail and style that those maps have, I think it would take more time to make maps for it. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Tormentor667 Posted September 11, 2016 Only by judging mapping skills (not modding, that's why people like Scuba for example doesn't fit here), I'd propose skillsaw, esselfortium, Agent Spork and Vader. I love the aesthetics and design the put into maps, make it all feel like it's one unique thing and not just squares connected to each other. ..oh, and me, best mapper of all time, you n00bs! 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

He hasn't been active in the community for a long time now, and it's not because he's too busy spamming detail sectors for Scythe-X's other episodes. He's gone Jim. I'm gonna mention Z86 though, since Hellbound is one of my favourite wads and the detailing/immersion is incredible for something done with vanilla textures. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

I tried to convince him once but Erik Alm will never kill another Cacodemon again. He has totally quit from anything Doom-related. I'll still make the occasional map here and there but don't expect much. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Probably not many people remember his Dinner episode, but it had some good hard-nosed fighting and was a very strong piece of work back in the day. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

If you behave yourself you may get some more maps from me, if you don't behave there will be symmetry, copy and paste and WOS MAP06 tributes LOL. But to be true if I get an idea I'll make something. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

yakfak Posted September 15, 2016 bump just realized only one person mentioned TimeofDeath. ToD is prolific and you can easily recognise his unique sense of architecture. add to that the audacity of the traps he uses, the clever (and often technical) way his maps unfold, plus niche moves like his alternate usage of the secret sector makes me think he's one of the most exciting mappers going today. Not even gonna do that "But they're hard!" disclaimer because it's so often used as a way to discredit. play more ToD maps edit: he also picks some of the best midis 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

cannonball Posted September 15, 2016 I actually agree with the above regarding Time of death, certainly a creative mapper and tends to use the stock textures in some imaginative ways. As for others, probably Skillsaw for pushing well beyond the bar set by Erik Alm, and Ribbiks and danne for really pushing the boundaries of difficult maps without making then a dull slog with a large amount of cleanup time. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
glenzinho Posted September 16, 2016 SkillSaw is da man fa sure. Cannonball is pretty good too. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
7hm Posted September 16, 2016 I'm surprised certain people didn't get a bit more love (from more modern mappers, I particularly enjoy Tarnsman's maps). My favorites that are outside the Erik Alm (and modern) tradition are: Bob Evans Jim Flynn John Anderson yakfak (zan-zan-zawa-veia) valkiriforce didy Also Sverre André Kvernmo and Richard Wiles, but both are a lot closer to Alm than the rest of those guys. And I've only recently played much of his stuff (about a third of the way through his maps right now) but I'm really enjoying Dave Johnson's maps. He's not got much in the way of obscure progression, just good old fashioned linear Doom maps. The maps are too easy and clearly a product of the time, but they're just fun. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Marcaek Posted September 16, 2016 ToD made The Room Below which is so underrated it's criminal. Technically masterful and being a Doom 1 doesn't hamstring it at all. Also check out Cassie Steele or his repurposed Drown in Blood map. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

That could be a consideration but there are many other ideas too. A Zone 300 sequel named Zone 400 (400 linedefs), a WOS sequel, another Pcorf community project, so many choices but more likely it will be just an occasional single level Doom or Doom 2 map that is either Vanilla or Boom compatible and the occasional submission to a community project. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
