I'm still using Skype, I just don't like the ugly layout, but I'll get used to it.

Discord has advantages and disadvantages.

Disadvantages include the fact it is not used by nearly as many people as Skype, and it has an uglier and more confusing layout.

It does function, however. A good reason to have a Discord account is as a backup in cases where Skype is going bonkers. I certainly would not be against a Doomworld Discord group.

Skype uses so much bandwidth and processing power, it's insane. Not to mention the layout, logging in and out, and generally any usability are garbage. I used to be a big TeamSpeak fanboy, but Discord is actually really good. I see it as some of the best parts of IRC with some of the best parts of Teamspeak, while also being pretty lightweight and the client being optional in most scenarios. Making an account is easy-peasy, it's just learning all the shortcuts and layouts that take time.

Seems the invite link is dead, Jim. Wouldn't take much to set one up, but I'll leave that to someone that has been here longer / site staff or something.

To guess, a topic of discussion that paves the way for a Doomworld Discord server, rather than outright declaring its creation. Were the OP some authority in the community then said community may have some implicit trust in the decision, though that isn't the case there. I imagine a topic created along these lines would have been more warmly welcomed by, e.g., Xaser:

You know what this community could use? A Discord server! In case you're unaware, Discord is a online communication application (text and voice) designed around gaming communities, and I think Doomworld could benefit quite a bit from one. I have a basic understanding of creating a server, but this topic is to generate interest and see if it's worth doing.

And then people would talk about what kinds of channels to add, and who should moderate what, et cetera. After all the details are sorted out, then a new topic (probably by a mod) would hash out the server details, provide a link (possibly require that one be a Doomworld member to get one), set some ground rules before entering, the usual.

To me, Discord seems a bit redundant to have with a forum-based community. For many it would simply become yet another source to check that they're keeping up-to-date with current news and trends. Maybe it would be useful for projects?

To elaborate a bit: there's really only a select few people here* I'd trust with running a community of some sort. It's not just something anyone can pick up and do, and the last time someone without a track record set up an "official (Z)Doom community server", it ended poorly.

Jesus. Regardless, it's an option that I'll leave up to a veteran member around here. If someone decides to do it, and needs help setting it up or whatever, let me know, but I (obviously) wouldn't feel comfortable moderating such a thing thing early into being involved with the Doom World community.

At this point, I did switch to Discord. I still use Skype, but not much. Once it gets the video call feature, I'm completely ditching it.

atm, I think one DOOM group is enough. I'm part of one already. I may join others soon

This is super dead (as in it was never a thing). There's an official Classic Doom Multiplayer discord and a couple others where a lot of the community hangs. I'll find some links and post them here shortly.

Maybe not exactly the right place to ask, but why create a new thread: Is there something like an active #doomworld IRC channel? If yes, which server?

There was one on quakenet, it may still be there but it was a ghost town last I checked. 99% of people have made the switch to Discord, for better or for worse.

Sorry for the late reply. Thanks so much for the links guys! I've been only really talking to people in games, and as much as I love Invasion and MoP, I want to get some deathmatch/any kind of versus game going. Doomseeker only ever has MM8BDB deathmatch games. Not a bad mod by any means, I just want some good ol' vs. in a more... DooMish setting? xD
