Just watched the Revenant for the first time like an hour ago. I think that the bear scene is incredibly overexaggerated, still brutal, but like, it wasn't as crazy as people make it up to be. I thought the fight at the end was pretty gnarly though. Went hard.

Speaking of The Revenant's bear scene, have you seen this?

I remember seeing Man in the Wilderness (1971) with Richard Harris in the theater as a kid when it first came out, which also explores the same real-life story of the fur-trapper and the bear.  The bear attack in that film seemed much more convincing than Revenant.  Sometimes when they try too hard and go for the ultra-real FX in modern cinema it comes off as completely unreal.

Studio Ghibli's My Neighbor Totoro. That one was okay, even though like with everything from Hayao Miyazaki, it did not resonate with me very much.

At least, unlike Porco Rosso, it did not involve a bunch of "endearing" pedophile characters...

Puss in Boots 2: The Last Wish. I watched it on Netflix on my CRT using a Blu-Ray Player that strangely supports 15 kHz composite video. It doesn't have RCA audio output, though, so I had to use an HDMI2AV converter for the audio.

Nimona!

That one was quite the surprise to me, as I remember reading the original webcomic and not liking it very much. Thankfully, N.D Stevenson has had the time to rework the story into something more consistent and meaningful, and then have it turned into a feature-length movie. I hear that it started production under Disney, but Disney being two-faced as always, it almost did not come out until Netflix agreed to pick it up have it distributed.

As for the movie, I would describe it as "Queer Shrek with a bit of The Iron Giant". It is not exceptional technically speaking, the movie's main antagonist is kind of bland and the plot can be a bit formulaic with some tonal whiplash towards the end (although thankfully nowhere near as severe as in the original webcomic), but it is still a good movie that I can recommend.

Poison for the Fairies

Basically, there's this one girl who wants to be a witch and as part of that, bullies and manipulates another girl. Her just deserts are hinted at from early on, although...it was probably excessive.

I really liked 'the creator'. It helped that it was my first ever IMAX experience. I went in blind, and was expecting a toned down irobot, but got a homage to about 10 of my favourite films. Filmed with a Sony FX3 body which you can buy on amazon for 3k. I wish endings were less ambitious for these films. You can tell the directors feel they have creative licence to let the characters skip the predictable gun fights and just run to the prize. Would make a great TV series, i hear HBO spend about 20m on an episode of house of dragon, so they should throw some money at this guy, pair him with some writers. Just please guys don't forget using vpn (read more about cyberhost for example) while streaming something, as it is about safety of all our data.

I am about fifteen years late on the first Iron Man, but I watched it the other night and enjoyed it quite a bit. It holds up all these years later.

Just watched Arctic Void.

Not that great a film, but kind of fun since I am very familiar with the locations. Largely set in Longyearbyen and in particular Pyramiden, which meant it was a constant "been there" fest, as well as the odd "lol, they are going the wrong way", etc.

Some honeymoon pictures from Pyramiden:

I saw Saw.

This reminds me of an amusing, albeit unintentional pun in French: in France, Saw is pronounced "so" for some reason (the "aw" sound does exist in French), so when Saw 6 came out, people pronounced it in the same way that you would say saucisse ("sausage"). XD

And Saw 7 is not pronounced Saw seven but So sept (pun with chaussette, sock in French).

I feel like it is closer to sucette ("lollipop").

I wonder if there are places in France where people still pronounce the s sound "sh". But then, I suppose they would say "chauchette" rather than *chaussette*. :P

Yes, that is exactly what I had in mind, but that volume is rather old (1967) and pronounciation can radically change over a few generations. Even characters in said volume acknowledge that their accent is going extinct because of the newer generations.

The Green Border (2023). Decent movie - it portrays the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border fairly well for the most part. As a Pole, I left the cinema not really knowing what the best solution is in this situation, which I guess was the intention.

War and Peace, Sergei Bondarchuk, 1967

Probably the leading candidate for, literally, the most epic movie ever.

I haven't read the book, but I took the movie as a sort of anti-Oppenheimer. Everyone is convinced that history is made by great men, and everyone wants to do grand things or at least feel in control of their own lives, but in reality they are all mediocre people who never get particularly lucky and also they're depressed and everything is terrible.

But, gradually, they find themselves taking joy in small moments or doing good in the world in small ways, and in the end they realize that decent people can make the world better if they band together, and ultimately Napoleon was a fuckin loser anyway.

Possibly the best battle scenes I've ever seen in a movie, although I deliberately avoid war movies because they're usually ridiculous.

Spoiler

I've also seen the first movie about 100 times I swear. So yeah, if you don't mind, I'm going to leave this world by way of brutal horse kick now.ONDyoL.gif.1f00b457878e87764a943c9e585a8450.gif
