Whatever, you'll get the story specifics when you play the game - speculating too much about it now will possibly make the story less interesting to follow when the game's out because we've already guessed half of it.

I thought I recognised the scientists bionic arm when you see the guy on the pentagram.

Anyway, persuading a scientist to open a portal to Hell wouldn't be too hard. Just say that they'll be really cool and get a lot of grant money, as well as a new lab coat and voila :p

I can't get myself to believe that the scientist opened a door to Hell on purpose - he clearly doesn't like the assignment he's been given as he says: "Ok, it's all set and done as you asked, but..I'm worried that the stabilization field will be.." and then he's told not to worry about it.

He obviously knows that it's a bad things if the stabilization fields will be overloaded/breached/whatever and he doesn't want that to happen.
It's not like he says: "Ok, I've succeded, I've opened a gate to Hell just as you wanted".
