Doom control scheme

And the funny thing is auto-aim keyboard was used because, at the time, the devs thought it would be easier since using the mouse to aim wasn't exactly a staple of first person shooters at the time. ZDoom sort of proves that mouse aim wouldn't have been difficult to implement even with Vanilla Doom's software rendering, it just would have distorted the view a bit.

I have no problems using the controls of vanilla Doom. When it comes to source-ports that have proper mouse-look support, I would of course use that instead, and most mods / games for (G)ZDoom are made with mouse-look in mind.

I learned that, if I map the keys as I would with a mouse-look source-port (WADS for movement, etc) with arrow keys for turning, I can play just fine as long as I'm not having to hit enemies directly above/below me because the auto-aim is pretty hit or miss.

The original MS-DOS released did support keyboard and mouse control, didn't it? I seem to recall that being available, though it wasn't enabled by default and I don't know how many people would have actually played with such a configuration.

Vanilla Doom, and even Wolfenstein 3D, has mouse support, though only for turning/moving forwards and backwards. John Romero actually stated in the Wolf 3D manual(?) that he would recommend using a mouse.

WASD and mouse for movement and aiming as is pretty standard these days
Q BFG
F Plasma
E Rocket Launcher
1-4 default
Spacebar use

If jumping is a thing I'll make spacebar jump, R rockets, E for use.

It didn't support mouse aim. Quake did, just not by default.

Mouse aim in what sense? You can't look up and down of course, but you can "aim" left to right just fine with a mouse in Vanilla Doom.

No mouse, just this keyboard.

ESDF instead of WASD
JL turns left/right
I use
K fast
Backspace fire

It sucks with Heretic though, since Backspace is hardcoded in the engine. I have to swap some keys before & after, via a wrapper script.
