Without it, not only can it just be seen as lack of awareness on the person saying it, it also avoids the whole "I know people are going to be upset by this but I'm doing it anyway" and "Because I might know this person who's like the people I'm upsetting, you're not allowed to get upset about it" things.

Like adding "...just kidding!" to the end of anything said. It's an all-purpose 'get out of jail free' card, allowing you to say anything you want, and then take it back!
More on topic: I think the word "left" come from a Latin word for "sinister". Or, I might have it backwards, where the word "sinister" comes from the Latin word for "left". Either way, yep, left-handedness was considered evil. Funny thing is, a lot of lefties are artistically inclined, supposedly, so there's some science to it.

Well, so far out of Doom II's monster bestiary, at least two are clearly ambidextrous (Arch, Manc), at least five don't have any clear use for their hands (Pinkies, Spectres, PE, Arachno, Mastermind), one is clearly left-handed (Cyber), four don't even have hands (Cacodemon, Lost Soul, Icon of Sin, Commander Keen)... and the remaining demons/zombies which by now make less than 50% of the combined Doom & Doom II bestiary, are ambiguously handed due to mirroring. Yup, great premise for a thread there, champ ;-)

I tend to disagree. Arch-Vile's attack (and resurrection, for that matter) is a typical spell-casting gesture that hardly requires much coordination and is pretty much symmetrical (I'm as far from being ambidextrous as one can get (probably a bit further, because of my left hand's limited range of motion), but even I can do it no problem). So, frankly, we haven't got a clue about Arch-Vile's handedness, not from his animation anyway.



Macubus's prosthetic weapons don't require much precision either: basically, he only needs to point his forearm in enemy's general direction, and only manages it with one of his arms at time anyway (one of the fireballs is always off). Anyone can point his arms in a direction, you don't have to be ambidextrous to do that. Actually, I bet most people would have done a better job with his guns than he does, provided they were strong enough to use them.

By that logic, neither do we about any of the other monsters, since we only have their animations to judge, and again, the entire premise of the thread is flawed.

I could just as well have claimed that all monsters are really ambidextrous or actually prefer using their feet in their everyday life, while only using a specific handedness when fighting to fuck around with Doomguy's and DW goons' minds.

I like this theory. It actually explains why some monsters use different hands when mirrored they face different directions.

Those stubby little hands that don't do anything.


If you take a closer look at the individual sprites, you'll notice that it actually uses its hands to pull little triggers on the sides to activate the chaingun. It's really subtle and hard to see in the low resolution of the sprites, but it's there!!!


Ok... I stop being a smartass now :P

Well done, you just made the Mastermind look hilarious. I just pictured in my head a high res Mastermind using its little hands to press little buttons on both sides of it.

On the subject of hands, how do Cacodemons and especially Lost Souls open doors? Ram their heads into the console?

Of course, there was an entire thread about that too, somewhere. My take on it, for cacos at least, is that they use their small tentacles/pseudopods that hang underneath them. For Lost Souls, well, I'm at a loss (pun intended).
