Quagsire Posted October 29, 2016 No, I listed my reasoning for disliking certain slaughter maps but that wasn't enough for anyone at all. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
DAZZER Posted October 29, 2016 My Opinion is that as long as they are not unfair (barely Health and Munition) like a Chillax.wad there fine and can be used for higher levels in MegaWads. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Memfis Posted October 29, 2016 Slaughter maps tend to feel comical. They reduce the roles of most monsters to dumb cannon fodder that dies in big packs. And when you see a hundred copies of the same sprite on the screen it just looks ridiculous. All slaughter maps preserve that feeling you had when you just discovered Doom editors and came up with a genius idea of putting 1000 cyberdemons in one room. They all have that trashy quality to them. Once in a while, when I'm in an appropriate mood, I can appreciate it. But usually in wads I look for, let's say, more delicate atmosphere. OK, maybe not all... Some authors are able to come up with epic looking maps where it feels like you're really fighting armies of evil and so the monster numbers seem kinda "legit". I guess Deus Vult belongs to that category? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
rehelekretep Posted October 29, 2016 i actually like that about doom, the slightly comic/comedic atmosphere. i mean any cacoswarm/pe swarm/imp swarm is simultaneously amusing and scary. another reason why i dont like brutal doom and its ilk; i find it dissonant 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Fonze Posted October 29, 2016 DoomWorld Count: How many deleted replies have we each accrued? I wrote and summarily deleted before posting 2 replies last night, with another 1 earlier in this thread and one for each 'slaughtermaps' thread this morning. So that makes me 5, more accurately 4 if we only count this thread, though. A number, I suspect, that more people can relate to with this thread than many others, so how many deleted almost-replies have you accrued? Also, can't OPs still lock their own threads? Smh enderkevin; grow up. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Quagsire Posted October 29, 2016 I can't delete replies. To end this hopefully, here are my final thoughts: I don't mind all slaughter maps, but the ones that are filled to the brim with cyberdemons and other big enemies, that's a no in my opinion. That's it, okay? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

That's it, okay? in other words: you don't dislike ALL slaughtermaps: there are some good slaughtermaps and some bad ones. you can't make a map with 1900 cybies vs you with a BFG and expect it to be good. on another note, a map with say 10 cyberdemons and a diverse set of enemies can be really good. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Marcaek Posted October 29, 2016 ToD has a cyber 2-shotting fetish (same) I can see plenty of splash damage gimmicks in a cyber-only no-health map which is sure to provide enough technical challenge and entertaining salt 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Spectre01 Posted October 30, 2016 Map 30 of Scythe has 18(?) Cybers but they are generally used well in that map. It's not about the high number of monsters but how well they are used. Although I do prefer amounts that don't crap GZDoom up and force me to switch to GLBoom+. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
TimeOfDeath Posted October 30, 2016 The most cybers I've used was 456 in nostril (and I demoed it). 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
baja blast rd. Posted October 30, 2016 Hey guys I replayed Suburbs today and looks like Kevin was right after all -- I'm pretty sure it's a slaughtermap. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Dylan Jarvis Posted October 30, 2016 Personally, I like the idea of maps with one or two slaughter encounters as opposed to a whole slaughter map. But there are slaughter maps out there that are fun and short. I'm not a fan of the sloggy ones that can take an hour to beat, or the ones that heavily rely on luck and save scumming to get through them. So all in all it depends on the map. Some are a blast and some just don't work for me. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Come back when you finish SF2012, Combat Shock 2, Sunder or Stardate 20x6. Because you have to beat something to know for certain you disslike it? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
