Doom 64 is NOT Doom (DEBUNKED)

That is possible, as there are two triggers for each barrels. Doomguy fires both by pulling both triggers at once.

The recoil is supposed to be massive though.

i mean firing it without shattering every bone in your shoulder

Doomguy's a hardened space marine. He was meant to fire all types of guns in everyway.

he can even fire an anti-tank rifle with only his pinky finger

I'm pretty sure the BFG is meant to have ridiculous recoil anyway.

I mean, I'm not sure if it should have recoil, but I'm pretty sure it would just to make it that much more satisfying to shoot.

This thread has been in active rotation for a month and a half. The conversations within have evolved far beyond the scope of the original topic, and have etched a serpentine path of discovery through the timeless annals of DoomWorld lore.

And I still get a good laugh from the title every time I see it. Not Doom indeed.

Carry on.

Thanks for reminding me, I have updated it to be more accurate.

Considering the mass of that energy ball and the speed at which it is fired, Newton's laws of motion dictate there should be an opposite and equal reaction. Arguably, Doomguy should fly back across the room and leave an anime-style dent in the wall, given he must be far less massive than the projectile (or the projectile is very low density so it is actually low mass for its enormous size...)

I remember that in Doom 3, the BFG projectiles had PC-like CPU chips right in the middle of them, and you could dissipate the projectiles by destroying the chips. I always thought that was rather silly.

But is Doom Doom 64? How much Doom could Doom Doom if Doom could Doom Doom?

Newtonian physics don't hold up in extreme situations.

If Boom came second, then Doom came first, so why isn't Boom Doom, since it came after Doom, meaning it can't be the Boom with out Doom, so it's Boom Doom. But the Doom Boom Doom is deprecated now, now replaced with Boom PrBoom PrBoom Plus Doom. But how can it be Boom PrBoom PrBoom and Doom? It could be written as Boom 2PrBoom Doom, right? Simple maths. Then there's ZDoom QZDoom. That's incorrect and too long. What's wrong with ZDoom(1+Q)? Don't even get me started on EDGE 3DGE. That should be DGE(E+3). What's wrong with people? But OP's about Doom 64. Hah. Stupid. The name is Ultimate Doom Doom II Final Doom Doom 64, according to the binomial theorem. But that's just too long. Doom(Ultimate II Final 64), now that's how you do it mathematically.

Barrels. That is amusing, although I wonder what the logic behind it is.

If Former Humans are entirely different actors to Former Sergeants and Chaingunners, does this mean that the Sergeants and Chaingunners were never humans in the first place? Does this explain why they all look identical, and why they're all bald and have the exact same skin colour?

I mean, maybe the Former Humans all have a milatary-style haircut.
And dyed it green in protest.

Doomguy is wearing spiked brass knuckles, and thus he creates bullet-like sparks when he punches hard stuff like walls and barrels, piercing and igniting them just like bullets (let's not bring Mythbusters into play here, showing how hard it's to actually detonate a tank full of gas by shooting it...)

As anyone who has been in the military can tell you, Sergeants are not human and do not have mothers. They reproduce by fission, like all bacteria.

Well, former humans are different actors from the Doomguy actor, too, which is the only true human we encounter in the game, so according to that logic ...

( not to mention that that logic makes Demons and Spectres completely unrelated )

yeah, and the zdoom marines are also different actors, too. as a matter of fact, marines with different weapons are considered different actors. so, does the UAC employ different species depending on what weapon they'll use? or do the weapons modify their genetic code?

i never knew that doom had such a complicated ecosystem.

At least it's not the weirdest weapon when it comes to recoil, the Plasma Rifle's recoil for some reason only kicks in when he STOPS firing. Try and figure THAT one out.

Can confirm. Also, Specialists don't do anything, much like a fungus.

I've always saw it as dissipating the heat that the gun builds up from firing the plasma. Not really sure, but it is a weird choice for animation, regardless.

Ah, but they didn't try with barrels of bubbling nukage!

Simple: the Plasma Rifle is engineered so that most of the force from the recoil is directed sideways or vertically. Also, this direction can be controlled by an internal stability gyroscope, which dynamically decides which direction to recoil towards, so that when firing in a stream, the net recoil is zero because it's being actively cancelled out, each shot's recoil canceling the previous'. Only when the user stops firing, the recoil from the last shot is apparent, with lag due to the gyroscope's inertia.

Well, in all fairness, the plasma rifle does show recoil in one of its firing frames - which seems to be mostly absorbed by the black part at the end of the barrel.

To be honest, I've always assumed the "recoil" frame was actually to cool it down, with the barrel being raised to let the heat escape through the fastest path, aka up.

Still, that's consistent with the theory about a mechanism that deflects/absorbs most of the recoil, EXCEPT for the last shot fired (it needs the full force from another shot to be 100% effective).

This explains why it kicks in even for single shots, no matter how long one has been firing before. If it was heat-related, certainly they couldn't rely on one cooling maneuver at the end of e.g. emptying 600 cells, could they? Of course, some small recoil directed towarsd the user remains (the gyro only cancels pitching/yawing), but it acts more like a constant force against a spring, only released after one stops firing.

I'm rather amused that people took my anything-other-than-former human =/= human joke seriously.

On Doomworld, this -and other stuff- is regarded as Dead. Serious. Business.

Doom 64 isn't exactly like Doom, therefore is not Doom.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theory_of_Forms ; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allegory_of_the_Cave

Your problem, Mr. Foebane72, with Doom 64's identity was actually presented some millennia ago in Plato's Republic in the Allegory of the Cave. To sum up, Doom has an essence - a "Doomness" if you will - that makes it what it is. Doom 64, I would argue, has that essential Doomness, and none of your arguments against it disprove this.

Certainly, Mr. Foebane72, you are entitled to your opinion, but before you can argue that one thing is not something, you must first understand what it is.
