The DWIronman League dies to: Back to Saturn X E1

Recommended Posts

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/129579662 = died on map 05. To the Cyberdemon. Something something TOTAL EXPOSURE. Apparently I deserved this death for partially cheesing the encounter using the lift. And I'd have gotten away with it too, if not for my own ultra-defensive playstyle.....

https://clips.twitch.tv/MildDistinctCocoaMau5 (thanks to MarketAnarchy for this) TL;DR here's my death for you.

So an_mutt gets the March 2017 Ironman win, taking the score to 2-1 in my favour. I'm also still hoping esselfortium herself does a run......

Yes, partially. It was my reaction to the second Archvile and his chums that cost me. I only managed to cheese the first Archvile and a few Revenants, not the whole thing.

The bookies were correct; I really should have placed a bet on suitepee dying in that room.

I'm actually in two minds about how that MAP05 setup is presented, although I don't doubt for a second that Suitepee's bible of backpedaling would have read him into a bad situation regardless. Unless you're cutting off entryways or have a layout allowing for more fluid monster movement (map03's YK trap was the only time Suite really found himself in the thick of it), it doesn't matter that a level might try to direct a player's actions and intentions; a player as conservatively minded as Suitepee is going to stick to the shadows - particularly in something like ironman - and damn it all if he runs out of ammo or finds himself in an unwinnable position!

The issue with this area in 05 is that it seems to present hanging back as the intended course of action, despite the previous parts of the level playing better as you push forward. Yes, Suitepee is immune to this power of suggestion - he's an exception to the rule. But to the average layman: the cyberdemon pops up, the revenants emerge from front-on, and hey presto there's a convenient barrier at precisely that position with enough width to complement some cool dodging maneuvers. Of course an archvile spawned right onto your ass is going to seem unfair; the arrangement suggests that this is the best place to take a stand.

Don't get me wrong, Captain, I like this here map. It's just no mystery as to why some people die the way they have. It is, at the very least, incredibly satisfying to see people fall prey to the same misdirection, over and over and over again :)

Riggedy-Friggedy-Fragged on Map 06 due to an overabundance of skulls, both flying and terrestrial. Wheeeee! Also, I don't know who this Walker Wright feller is who made map 05, but he's kind of a serial killer.

This time around, a mapset I have some foreknowledge with: played it for the MegaWAD Club back then and also did a full playthrough with saves  Still have some memory of where to find secrets and some of the traps.  Full disclosure: I did scout map 3 before recording because of a certain secret from the beta that I really wanted.  Also did a bit of scouting on later maps that I don't reach in this attempt.

For once, I remember I'm doing an ironman demo and actually skip monsters: don't have 100% kills in a single completed map.  Map 3 put me close to death several times (went in with 200% armor and it was all gone during the course of the map) but it's in map 4 where the blue key crowd claims another marine.  I remembered there was trouble from before but underestimated how congested it would be.  Too scared to use rockets, got pinned and pummeled by barons.

Going to try the new attachment feature, hope this works.  PrBoom 2.5.1.4 -complevel 2

I don't know which trap is the worse between the last trap of map 05 from Legacy of Heroes and the trap of Btsx's map 05. :o

Anyway , it seems that map 05 has always at least a sadistic trap among wads chosen for the ironman.

Legacy's MAP05 killed 18% of players, while BtSX's has killed 31%—all in the same encounter too! Pavera holds the most skulls for a single map in the Ironman runnings thus far IIRC.

Map04. I remember that trap being nasty but i didn't remember Barons. Would have helped if i could have remembered how to get that Soulsphere secret! I don't think i got the map01 SSG first time round so that trap was alarming...!

I think my goal for this season now is to try to match Alfonzo and Eris :)

This is the first time i've streamed anything - will try to get the mic sorted for next time and announce it in advance etc for a bit more of an event.

Technically, wouldn't most skulls belong to "Jade Earth", since it's a single map?

Ah, right you are! Guess we have to wait to see if another single map Ironman run will dethrone it, as a 77% kill rate is hard to top :P

Oh, it'd be easy to top -- make people do the 1-map version of Deus Vult...

Ded in map06, blind run as always, also after only 1 hour of sleep (last ironman was 3 hours :D)

Here's my run for this month, slightly earlier than usual (uses 1.1.1, + 2 secret levels): http://www.mediafire.com/file/j8hi7k5gbcq0ub9/BTSXE1_DotW_Iron.lmp

Despite some horribly embarrassing snafus along the way, was making pretty good time, relatively speaking--good enough to hold the much-vaunted silver medal once more--but I wasn't anywhere near scared enough of map 19, it seems. So many sorcerers.  I do believe it was a wide-orbiting rev rocket that actually got me, though. Congrats to both Wilou and Krypto, this is probably one of the hardest Ironmans to date, largely a function of its great length + and its updated/augmented combat. Certainly harder to accuse the set of feeling like it has no real difficulty curve than it used to be. ;)

It's still a really cool mapset, guys, all the moreso for the many new touches and touchups, particularly the classic thematic twist that has been introduced later on. Gets me all fired up with anticipation for the first public beta of E3, again and anew.

Ah, Demon, that's too bad... :)

I've just watched your death - Pretty sure you could have made it with some more preknowledge. That RL cave you went in is completely devoid of Cells as far as I can remember, and immediately going to the Plasma Gun area instead would've helped a lot to safely blast off every one of these pesky Viles.
Still, very nice play, and congrats for surviving that long. See you again next month.

I'm still curious to see how essel would fare :p
C'mon, there's only a few days remaining...

That would be painful. :)
I'd pathetically die in the opening platforming sequence even before killing the first monster.

For those fantasizing about some heart-breaker map like okuplok or nochance rocking up to spoil the party... it's not out of the realm of possibility, but it would have to be supported by a unique rule set, so that people who've waited 30 days to put in a good performance don't bow out within the first 30 seconds of play. Granted, that would be hilarious; I'd probably start rounding numbers down instead of up so that the board is half-filled with 0% performances. In time, perhaps - when the planets align and the guard is down.

I agree , it's a good idea to choose nochance or okuplok for the ironman

Spoiler

but only with the -nomonster setting. :p

However , even if you play okuplok.wad without monsters , you have high chances to die by falling in a deadly pit.

I'm still kind of hoping that Zeromaster turns up with a late entry for this, since I've mentioned this to him a couple of times. Just trying to summon some competition for Bloodite's stranglehold on the top spot.....

Props to esselfortium for finally partaking in this Ironman. Interesting that you died on your own map! (will you do more Ironmans in the future?) And I'm still expecting to hear a BTSX E3 announcement after this is all over tonight......even as an April Fool's joke.

Whatever wad will Alfonzo pick next? Hopefully something I can restore my 2-point lead cushion on an_mutt with.....

Last-minute entry. Only semi-serious.

Objective of the Ironman contest is survival, with time only as a tiebreaker. Right? Thus I bourlased1 to the first intermission map, then stopped. It was too much to think of doing the whole 25 maps in one sitting. The goal was to pass the deadly map04-06 triumvirate, which I achieved.
