invictius Posted May 4, 2017 486-100 in vanilla is smooth until where all the Mancubi start firing. What was the average system upon release? I doubt it's the architecture, is it just that Mancubi just fire a lot of projectiles that vanilla can't cope with? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Graf Zahl Posted May 4, 2017 Yes, pretty much that. A projectile is a constantly moving thing and movement checks are rather expensive - especially on such slow old systems. The mancubus fireballs make it worse by moving fast, so they tend to perform two instead of one movement steps each tic. Have 20 such projectiles active and it's the same amount of checking as 40 moving monsters at the same time - but that barely happens because monsters only move every 2, 3 or 4 tics. I think this clearly shows how weak the hardware was that Doom needed to run on, and that it was quite an achievement to make such a game even work on that in the first place. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

What are some examples of iwad maps that run slow, for reasons other than this? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
