PsychEyeball Posted January 18, 2023 Been playing Secret Agent HD, a modern port of Apogee's Secret Agent. It's actually a good formula for making a port of an old game; make the resolution bigger, make the game play and feel of the game smoother, but without distancing itself too much from the original game. The graphics still feel very EGA and only had minor touchups on them to make them look more sharp without compromising the design philosophy of the parent game. The sound effects remain bleeps and bloops from the PC Speaker but now also include an Adlib soundtrack, which makes the game feel less empty sound-wise but doesn't make the product feel anachronistic in return. I never played Apogee's original version of the game as a kid, but this new version is a good way to first experience the game, even in 2023. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Jello Posted January 19, 2023 (edited) I finally decided that I'm going to finish Blood 2, so I'm mucking my way through it. I finally managed to get it running well enough on Windows 10 that it's not crashing with that damn MFC error constantly, so I'm going to finish my twenty year old goal of actually slogging my way through it. I'm currently in chapter 3, and I made the mistake of playing on Homicide, instead of Genocide difficulty, which is clearly a mistake. It's obvious the game was nowhere near ready to be released, the weapon RNG is just miserable, and the way they jacked up enemy health from the easy difficulty to the normal difficulty is insane. On easy (Genocide) you can gib the base cultists with one or two pistol shots, on normal (Homicide) they can take anywhere from three pistol shots, to twelve. Sometimes more. There's no rhyme or reason to how much damage your weapons do. Sometimes you can kill an enemy with one flare, then you reload the same save, and the same enemy takes ten flares to kill. Sometimes an enemy will die in two shotgun blasts, sometimes it takes eight. It's broken, but damn it, I'm this far in, I'm going to finish it on Homicide without cheating. Well... to be fair I did end up cheating through a level, because I was almost done with it, and then I must've quick saved at the same time a tick latched onto my face, which causes a ridiculous swaying motion in your vision, which never went away, even if I reloaded the save. So I reloaded at the start of the level and turned on god mode to get back to where I was, because I wasn't going to put up with the entire level again. It's sad, because there are times when the game actually does seem fun, and I can see the potential, but GT pushed it out the door way too early, and it's a shame. Oh, and people who complain about the hitscanner cultists in the original Blood should try Blood 2, they will literally shred you apart in under a second. I was stuck at a point where I had to go around a corner and there were three Cabalco soldiers with rifles, and they will hit you before you even get around the corner. I don't know if the player hit box is too wide, but they can hit you before you can even see them, and they will instantly fire without hesitation. Although I've also noticed that explosions aren't blocked by walls either. It's a broken mess. Edited January 19, 2023 by Jello 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

And hey, once you're done with Blood 2, don't forget to play the Nightmare Levels! Does it fix any of the issues that Blood 2 have? Absolutely not. Is it much shorter? Of course. At the very least, you get to play as all the Chosen in it, which does spice it up a little. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Rudolph Posted January 19, 2023 I am playing Opposing Force right now. Such a good expansion pack, and I really wish there could be a Opposing Force 2. And yes, I know about the mod, but it appears to have been dead for years. :( 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Got a bit of hankering to play classic Half-life lately though so i might pick those up too. I played Half-life on PS2 so never actually played the PC version before. Even Black Mesa I only played a few stages of the unfinished non-commercial mod. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Rudolph Posted January 19, 2023 (edited) Opposing Force and Blue Shift are really worth it: the former because it adds on top of everything that made the original good (new weapons, new enemies, new friendly NPCs, new perspective on the original events) and the latter because it is a shorter but leaner additional campaign. hybridial Posted January 19, 2023 (edited) Freedoom Phase 1, I'm on the secret level of episode 2 now. I like it overall, though the levels are maybe a little long and obtuse at times. Very detailed and pretty though, but essentially it's more Doom only not quite and free. Hard to complain. I'm also primarily using the Doom Retro source port now and with the addition of full controller support it meets all my requirements. I'll be using it a strong alternative if not replacement to GZdoom for vanilla style maps (which is what I like in the end) Edited January 19, 2023 by hybridial 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
MrFroz Posted January 20, 2023 The GOG version of Silent Hill 4: The Room. I am enjoying it, but I can kinda understand why this is the black sheep of the Team Silent SH games. However, there's still some really neat things about it: I really like how you can return to Henry's apartment and recover health just by being there and being able to look out through the windows and peepholes and hear stuff on the radio (when it's not noise) just so that you can have a slight, faint connection to the real world. It's the series' equivalent to the save rooms on Resident Evil, imo. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Technicolor Posted January 20, 2023 (edited) Playing Doom 2: Eviternity. It is not like other megawads. It causes Fps drop on my PC. I play at 1366X768 as the laptop's screen is 1366X768. Edited January 20, 2023 by Technicolor 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

It's a hard task that I've put before myself, but I will do it. I put another hour into it today, and it's still like I'm smashing my head against a wall. Today was the day that I met the phantasms *edit* apparently they're called Death Shrouds in Blood 2 *edit* that shoot flaming skulls at you, and apparently you can only hit them when they're getting ready to fire a skull. Which, okay, it reminds me of the phantasms from Blood, with the scythes, and you can only shoot them when they phase in and become opaque. Except in Blood 2, they stay the same transparent texture no matter what they're doing, so you have to guess at which point during their janky animation you can shoot them. And it threw another one of the chapter 2 bosses at me in the middle of a high-rise office building, so I spent several minutes getting it hung up on the geometry so I could just unload everything I had into while it couldn't move until it finally died. Because if you don't get them stuck, they will kill you almost instantly. Oh, it's going to be fun, really I'm amazed at how long the game is. I forgot that most FPS games in the late 90's were around 15 to 20 hours, and Blood 2 seems much longer than that. 18 hours ago, Rudolph said: @Jello Are there no mods to fix those issues? There's really not. Pretty much anything you can find for Blood 2 are simple patches to get it working on modern systems. There is an Extra Crispy mod for it (which shouldn't be confused with the Extra Crispy mod for Blood), but most of what that does is gets it working on modern systems, adds better textures and sounds, and it does revamp player damage. So you take less damage, but I don't think it addresses the RNG with your weapons. And it adds in extra enemy spawns, which is why I tried it once and stopped. I didn't die instantly, but there wasn't enough ammo to take out 10 soldiers when there was only supposed to be 2. It's either a result of the source code for the game not-existing anymore, which wouldn't surprise me, or people not caring enough about Blood 2 to really mod it. I think it's probably a combination of both. The game is broken, but at least it's somewhat stable. 17 hours ago, PsychEyeball said: YOU'RE GONNA DIE A SLOW DEATH! COME ON, WE WON'T HURT YOU! I actually did dabble in those a little bit, and it seems like they might be... somewhat competent. But I'll have to finish the main game first. Wyrmwood Posted January 26, 2023 (edited) Heroes of Might and Magic VII (or Might and Magic : Heroes VII for some reason). It's not as good as the almighty Heroes III but different enough to warrant a play, the graphics, sound and music are sublime, the stories are fairly well told and the battles are definitely a touch more tactical even if they do take a little too long sometimes. Special mention for the death animations, in fact the animations are pretty good all round, it's a little like watching that holo-chess game in Star Wars. Heard it's pretty buggy but 3 maps into the Haven campaign and no problems so far, fingers crossed for the rest. Edited January 26, 2023 by Wyrmwood 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Garlichead Posted January 27, 2023 Playing through Freedom Force vs the Third Reich. It is an RPG/RTS hybrid in which you use a team of 4 silver age super heroes to solve missions. The overall gameplay kind of reminds me of the Dungeons and Dragons rpgs from the 90s, in which you can pause the action at any time to give orders to your PCs but much more straightforward. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
