What Video Game Are You Currently Playing?

Recommended Posts

I hate that old AVGN video where he claimed that the Sega Genesis had no good games except for Sonic. While I still think that the Super Nintendo is the superior console (especially when it comes to the controller), I keep finding out about these forgotten/underappreciated gems on the Sega Genesis.

Resident Evil 2 Remake with Claire.

Yeah playing through Leon's story just last night, games actually much more faithful to the OG game than I expected, thought it would be more like 4-6 (not a bad thing either of course) but ended up very impressed. I love that its still set in the 90's too.

I wouldn't mind replaying the original on an emulator sometime too, not played since 98 so it would be cool to spot the differences. It's a shame Capcom didn't include it in the game (maybe it's an unlockable, I've not checked).

Did you play on hard-core mode? Seemed from the choices this was more the classic 98 difficulty but got to admit I am struggling for ammo now despite playing quite carefully. Hope I've not backed myself into a corner but if I have to re-start I'm not too far in (little past the first boss, with the big eye growing out his shoulder).

I have beaten the remake many times already. I like how certain sections are almost the same but have a little twist, like the bit with the robotic hand in the freezing room where Claire quips "I should have bought a parka" when entering, and I especially like how the game doesn't have loading times when transitioning from one room to another unlike the original, which helps with keeping the tension high. The gunplay can be pretty satisfying too, I had a good time firing the MQ 11 against the zombies.

I don't feel like playing the original game once more any time soon, I have played it dozens of times, but it is clear they had some technical limitations in the sense that there are never more than five zombies on screen throughout the whole game and they made a lot of L-shaped corridors so that they could place the monsters in a way that even though there are few of them, they are positioned in a way that make them difficult to avoid and very likely to grab you if you don't react fast. Emulation might actually be a good choice, because even though the excellent Classic REbirth patch is available for the PC version, said patch works with the Japanese version of the game which is notably less difficult than the North American release.

I have decided to play Mega Man: The Sequel Wars - this time, on Easy with Double Jump and Unlimited Weapon Ammo, because I am tired of all the bullshit ways to die. Now I am enjoying the game and its radical soundtrack a lot more! :D

I had a lot of fun with this game, first playing through with Leon then Claire, and then again with Claire first and Leon second, which I don't really recommend because other than an extra weapon in the B scenario that you'll likely not use much anyway, each A and B story plays out the same no matter which combination. Either way, RE2 has got to be one of my favorite types of 'remake' because its such a different overall experience that it still makes you actually want to play the original. While I like both the og and remake versions of RE1 and RE4, the overall experiences are a bit too similar for me to get immediately primed for the other version, whereas both versions of 2 and 3 feel more complimentary. I don't think I share the sentiment of wanting remakes to be simply the same game with modern amenities and new engine/models/textures, they can be tedious to play and I'm sure they're even more tedious to make. Not that the remakes of RE1 and RE4 are 1:1 by any means, but they do allow for more direct comparisons from scene to scene, unlike 2 and 3 is all.

The Sourcenext version of Biohazard 2 for PC with the Classic REbirth patch is the way I went into it for Claire A Leon B, and I emulated the PS1 version for Leon A Claire B. Even after playing so much of the remake, the original RE2 still feels fresh and is totally worth replaying, and it still even makes me appreciate and want to replay the remake again.

Sure definitely, although that's actually one of the things I'm liking about the re-make, apart from the run through the streets part it doesn't throw horde's at you. Seems to be around the same amount of enemies only they are much more resilient and dangerous to account for the fact you have much easier to use controls this time around. Resi 5 is one of my all time favourite action games, especially the sieges but its never scary, unlike this one, even a lone zombie can be a threat if your not prepared.

Finally played through the Slaughter Until Death wad, which is another classic from the Top 100 WADs list.

It was much harder and more creative than Fava Beans, that is for sure! Still has some rough edges, though.

I think you can scrap Sonic at all, the Games just aren't that good.

I've got to play Mega Geni Games about 2017 and the best ones are:

Streets of Rage 1 & 2

Phantasy Star 4

Asha in Monster World

Still on my List is Beyond Oasis, it looks at least very good.

Also that Fire Emblem like Game looks pretty good.

Honorable Mention also to Light Crusader, was really a Surprise to me.

Sonic for me is more on the B or even C Tier List.

Maybe i am just not enough into arcade like Games, as Mega Geni Games are mostly closer related to as Super Nintendo Games.

Btw. i don't remember where on Youtube i have heared somebody mix up Mega Drive and Genesis to Mega Geni, but i love it haha

What about Ristar, Golden Axe, Columns, Ghostbusters, NFL '94, Disney's Aladdin, Dune II, the Shining Force series, Contra: Hard Corps, Mega Man: The Wily Wars, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Bugs Bunny: Double Trouble, TNMT: The Hyperstone Heist and so on? Even the ports that were shared with the Super Nintendo were pretty good for the most part, like Earthworm Jim I & II, the Mortal Kombat games, Disney's The Lion King and Super Baseball 2020.

The Sega Genesis had plenty of good games, actually: to imply that it only had Sonic is simply disingenous.

Which video was this from? I'd imagine that even if he ever had said that, it was likely less of a soapbox claim and more of a hyperbolic character exclamation. The show is after all comically focused on the negative elements of old games.

Is that what @Azuris meant? I took his “the Games just aren't that good” comment as “the Sonic Games just aren’t that good”, and he mentions and names several other Genesis titles he enjoyed in that same post. He then even states that to him the Sonic games are “B or C tier”.

Exactly how I read it too, they both even mention Shining Force, even though Azuris referred to it as a Fire Emblem-like, its obvious what they meant.

The whole console war thing was stupid, especially given the consoles them-selves were relatively cheap. Better to own both, the SNES was admittedly my favourite but only an idiot could discount the entire Megadrive catalog.

@BGreener Ah, good point. I can see it now. My bad!

But yeah, while Sega Genesis did struggle to make the Genesis stand out against the Super Nintendo, it did have many great exclusive titles. The recent homebrew Mega Man: The Sequel Wars is also a good reminder of what can be done with the console.

 F.E.A.R.

It's got some of the best and most memorable sound design. Lots of little sounds, and each is easily recognizable, e.g. when it gets taken apart for other games' mods. Each got a little bit of soul invested into it, despite the unripe sounding cliche like bowed metal SFX. And it gets better towards the end with the more industrial and sci-fi elements,  still tethered to the overall horror tone.

One of the best Sega Genesis games of all time is an RPG called Shining Force. Shining Force 2 is even better than that.

Vectorman

Ecco The Dolphin

Samurai Shodown

Columns

Earthworm Jim 1 and 2

Contra: Hard Corps

Streets Of Rage 2

Rocket Knight Adventures

As for Sonic, you have to get Sonic 3 and then hook it into Sonic and Knuckles to get the ultimate Sonic 3 and Knuckles experience, greatest sonic game ever made

I just went to my old collection to get you more names

Jurassic Park Rampage Edition

Chakan the Forever Man

X-Men 2: Clone Wars

Just going to drop this here for you. For the record though, Doom 32x had bad soundtrack, but oh well.

@Dreamskull I have mixed feelings about the new Doom games' soundtracks, but I do think the Genesis' sound chip is a fitting choice.

We ❤️ Katamari Reroll! It's such a relaxing game. I'm doing that and Final Fantasy VI since the the copy I got from Play Asia just arrived. Both on the Switch. That and doing my yearly replay of all the IWADs. Currently almost done with Doom 2.

Currently going through Mega Man X5 with the amazing Improvement Project Addendum. Gone are the infamously unskippable navigator transmissions and cutscenes! And while I still feel like the game is not quite as polished as X4 in terms of animations and sound design (the soundtrack itself is cool, though), I do find it much more enjoyable than I remembered.

However, the whole throwback to Quickman's death lasers is just horrible. I still cannot believe that such segment would be used as an example of "good" level design in a harsh review of Mighty No. 9: think whatever you will of the latter (I think it is alright), but Quickman's death lasers are definitely not the best that the Mega Man series has to offer. Oh, and fuck Volt Kraken's opening ride chaser segment too!

EDIT: Oh yeah, and I finished The Sequel Wars's Mega Man 4 once as Mega Man. Capcom sure was not fucking around back in the days: in addition to the eight robot masters and Dr. Cossack's fortress levels, you also have four more Dr. Wily's fortress levels!

I guess this is yet another example of a game that keeps going after what felt like the climax. Anyway, I just cannot imagine myself going through such gauntlet without all of Sequel Wars' quality-of-life improvements: one of Mega Man's appeals is that you can choose to do levels in any order, yet for some reason, the final fortress levels always do away with that non-linear approach.

FIFA 21, 3DS version of Tetris Ultimate and Arsenal Club Football on the PS2. I'm also playing some Tetris DX on a Gameboy Pocket I found I could recharge. Although, I'm planning to play a lot of games after I've finished my exams, mainly Red Dead Redemption, Spec Ops: The Line and maybe some PS2 games but for now FIFA and Tetris are pretty good, especially as the football season is over now until August, so I need some kind of football-related thing to keep me going until then, even if it is playing as an Arsenal team from 20 years ago.

Just finished Final Fantasy 5 Pixel Remaster.  I have to say, 3 and up have so for been nothing short of incredible.  Will be starting 6 next week, need to take a break.  Turn-based RPG'ing and constant ATB (because, you know, grindy JRPG's) get old quickly enough.

Starting on Warhammer 40k Boltgun next, already three levels in.

Finished both Mega Man X5 as X & Zero and The Sequel Wars' Mega Man 4 as Mega Man, Proto Man and Roll.

And now, I am exhausted. _o_
