ReaperAA Posted July 24, 2023 After thinking about playing it for at least past 3 years and having even tried it before (but then bouncing off), I have finally managed to complete Marathon yesterday (the first one that is, I still have to beat Marathon 2 and Infinity). It helped that Aleph One source port had significant QoL features added (higher frames with interpolated animations, improved mouse feel, dedicated weapon hotkeys, FOV slider) compared to last time I tried it. As for the game itself, the combat/gameplay isn't anything to write home about in best cases and moderatly annoying at worst (mandatory lava dunks/grenade jumping, timed switches/elevators and the save game mechanic where you have to backtrack through an entire map at some points just to save at pattern buffers etc.). The final map "Ingue Ferroque" was also quite disappointing. No boss fight. Just fighting some regular enemies in dark-ish circular areas, followed by a mandatory dunk in lava (good luck if you didn't manage to save yourself enough health) to get to the final terminal to end the game. However, what elevates the game is it's atmosphere and plot. On surface, it seems fairly straightforward early one with what messages you get from Leela (one of the AIs of human ship), but it seems to get more interesting later on. Here is to hoping that the plot will get even more interesting in 2 and Infinity. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

I love it but the game is so absolutely marred by bonkers design choices and questionable gameplay that I am 95% sure anyone I convinced to play it would absolutely hate me for it (for instance, the civilians/allies that you are encouraged to protect blocking corridors, the several lava dips and terrible swimming sections, the bizzaro level completion requirements of later chapters...). 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Agreed, especially about being able to recommend to anybody. Unless one has nostalgia for Marathon and/or managed to get into it back in its day, it's a game that is not easy to get into at all once you have played other FPS games. Much harder to get into compared to its contemporaries. But it's also I game that I am glad I finally got into (this being my 3rd attempt at getting into it) if only for it's atmosphere and plot. And especially Durandal :p Edited July 24, 2023 by ReaperAA 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Rudolph Posted July 25, 2023 (edited) So Murder By Numbers is a good Phoenix Wright pastiche with some good characters and an intriguing story, but I am getting so sick of the nonogram mechanic: it gets old fast, it is not really justified by the plot and it only serves to bring the game to a screeching halt. What is worse is that some story material is locked behind extra puzzles that can only be accessed by playing without hints, which makes it even more tedious. Honestly, the game would have worked just fine as a visual novel. Edited July 25, 2023 by Rudolph 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Herr Dethnout Posted July 25, 2023 (edited) Doom 64, Limbo and a lot of OpenTTD (Big fan of the original TTD and this version has a LOT of great content). And some CS 1.6 & Killing Floor online. Seriously Killing Floor is still a great Horde MP game, hope to see somebody here to play it. :P Quote @Rudolph Murder By Numbers is currently being given away on Epic Games Store. Async Unicorn Posted July 26, 2023 It would be good to finally finish Portal 2, although I don't have the energy or the mood to play any other games different to Doom, even if i like them. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

The game is set in 1996, yet I do not recall this ever being a thing fashionwise. Her denim outfit in the concept art looks much better in addition to being appropriate for the time period. Oh well, still a good game with an engaging story, and Honor Mizrahi herself is a well-written character and she has good chemistry with her robotic sidekick and the supporting cast, but as I said, I could have done away with the nonogram mechanic. Thankfully, there is an Easy Mode that makes them into a cakewalk, but you get less points for completing them and thus you do not get enough to unlock the extra story scenes. Cosmic79 Posted July 29, 2023 DMC5 after finishing Nier Automata. This is my first DMC game, I bought it just to see why is the series so liked. Extremely stylish and fun to play. Lacking a meaningful story and any kind of exploration, but it makes up for it by having good gameplay. My only gripe with this game is the bad keyboard controls as it is designed for the controller. I imagine it's much easier to get combos right with a controller. Nier Automata is as good as the reviews say, it's excellent in all aspects and comes with a stellar soundtrack. It can be repetitive and its world is small for an RPG, but it's not an issue in this case. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Astar Posted July 29, 2023 Recently completed Mass Effect 1. I'm currently playing ME2. What a great game series. Damn, still fresh even 10 years later 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
ReaperAA Posted July 30, 2023 Only Marathon Infinity left now. Just completed Marathon 2. Much better than first Marathon. Particularly the level design department. Much more open and less claustrophobic than those of the first game. Though like in M1, the final map in M2 was again kinda meh. Atleast it did feel somewhat climatic. The final room with a juggernaut was kind dickish though. Had to ignore killing him (or it would explode and kill me) and rush the terminal without getting to read it. Managed to read the last terminal through wiki. And also managed to discover the secret Bungie terminal. The secret terminal with messages from Bungie employees reminded me of that secret PDA in the last map of Doom 3. Anyways, M2 is done. Now I shiver what Marathon Infinity has to offer. It has a reputation for getting very... complex. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

hybridial Posted July 30, 2023 I have runs ongoing in Shadow Warrior, Blood and Hedon. I got Deadlink out of Early Access and I quite like it, and also played The Ninja Saviours a bit since it released on Steam. I felt I couldn't play anymore Doom, I'm taking a fairly length break from the idtech 1 and Quake stuff. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Azuris Posted July 31, 2023 Rage but i did delete it. I have it for years now on my HDD and i give it again and again a try, but this game is just so boring. I can't even comprehend that this is made by ID. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Agent Slacker Posted August 1, 2023 4 hours ago, Azuris said: I can't even comprehend that this is made by ID. I agree to a point. Sure, the big hub world is kinda dull and saturated brown, and the game is trying to do too many things at once with the driving and the shooting, but the one thing that it does well are the animations. From the slightest eyebrow movements of a character's face to the exaggerated death animations of enemies, to the little bits and bobs of a weapon, it all reminds me how talented those Texans are at animation. Anyways, I decided to replay Republic Commando again on hard. Having recently watched the entirety of the Clone Wars, playing through this game has given me a greater appreciation of the events happening. I'm also on a Rainbow Six Vegas binge, so Republic Commando scratches that itch when I'm at work. The two games are very similar in more ways than just being squad based shooters. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Rudolph Posted August 1, 2023 (edited) Discovered this forgotten gem on the Game Gear: Nothing revolutionary and the first chapter has a steep difficulty spike if you do not stock up on healing herbs, but it is a perfectly competent JRPG. I guess the biggest criticism that could be levied against it is that it feels very orientalist in its portrayal of... Arabia? Middle East? Western Asia? I could be wrong, of course, but the aesthetics seem to be all over the place, just like in Disney's Aladdin: you have characters with arabic names like Saleem, the protagonist is dressed like Mr. Popo from Dragon Ball (!) - although he thankfully does not share the blackface - and the main villain is Ahriman, who I am pretty sure is a Persian divinity/mythological character. I guess this is what happens when you let a Japanese development team make a game vaguely inspired by One Thousand and One Nights... I do prefer the fan-made Eternal X, which uses a similar premise in a much more straightforward and comprehensible fashion. Edited August 3, 2023 by Rudolph 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
