Magnusblitz Posted July 31, 2017 MAP16: Conclusion As others have said, it's a standard IoS (even less involved than usual, since you don't need to mess around with going up-down unless you need to dip down to grab the RL). I do like with start with the battery of rocket zombies at range, though. Not many overall comments - they're 94/95 mapsets, though I can see why they would've stood out back then, as they're definitely better than most of the schlock from back then, even if they don't hold up as anything special today. I definitely preferred Denis' maps to Thomas', as the latter tended to use more bits that bored or annoyed me (pinkie overuse, lots of cramped 64-wide areas). 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
gaspe Posted August 1, 2017 MAP16: I was kinda expecting it, an IoS level to conclude the set. I think it was allright for the most, with its share of cool moments and stuff to find, and only few parts that were outright bad. Maybe it's more of a granted thing but at least to me it was interesting to see the shift in the style from SUDTIC and TEUTIC after Doom 2 was released. The dehacked stuff was interesting and it was used pretty well. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
vdgg Posted August 1, 2017 Obituary overall These maps are not perfect; almost every map has some dubious mapping decisions. Hidden pain elementals, switches than can be pressed from below, blue key grab on MAP15. But apart from two stinkers, MAP07 and MAP31, every map has some redeeming factors, and all of them (hey, even these two) are, IMO, highly memorable. That's something. Favourite maps: there's a lot. MAP01, MAP08, MAP09, MAP11, MAP13 I guess. I continue my claim that MAP09 is gorgeous design-wise. Dehacked: both monsters and weapons were cool. The only weapon that changed the balance significantly (in player's favour) was the flamethrower. The monster replacement had an unusal side-effect. Guess which monsters were most common in Obituary? Spoiler All levels Trooper : 208 251 337 Sergeant : 313 404 495 Heavy Weapon Dude : 187 244 322 [D] Imp : 117 148 197 Demon : 317 441 587 Spectre : 69 98 124 Lost Soul : 50 67 102 Cacodemon : 31 46 70 [D] Hell Knight : 134 194 271 Baron of Hell : 19 23 26 Arachnotron : 12 19 27 Pain Elemental : 11 17 21 Revenant : 34 50 73 Mancubus : 25 36 45 Arch-vile : 5 6 9 Cyberdemon : 2 2 2 Icon of Sin : 1 1 1 [D] Wolfenstein SS : 52 65 77 Commander Keen : 3 3 3 Total : 1590 2115 2789 Total HP : 185600 251760 331360 Note that [D] Imp means bazooka trooper and [D] Hell Knight = Superimp, [D] SS is obvious... I think pinky demon being most common monster is a rarity. I believe in almost all 95-95 mapsets it was the imp used most, followed by sergeant. Here the imp is non-existent, so the pinky plays the cannon fodder role. Also, I had this encyclopedic data gathered years ago, in which levels are all the weapons: shotgun/chaingun: . = normal , = from dead sergeant/chaingunner sg cg SSG R L FLT SON chs BZK MAP01 , , 1 2 MAP02 . . 1 1 1 4 MAP03 . , 1 MAP04 , . 2 1 1 MAP05 . , 2 1 1 3 MAP06 . , 1 1 1 MAP07 , 4 4 MAP08 , , 1 1 1 2 MAP09 . , 1 1 1 1 2 MAP10 , , 2 2 1 4 MAP11 , , 1 1 1 MAP12 , , 1 1 2 1 1 MAP13 . , 1 1 1 1 1 1 MAP14 , , 1 1 1 1 2 MAP15 . , 2 2 1 1 MAP16 . . 1 1 1 1 1 2 MAP31 . , 1 1 1 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

Here the imp is non-existent, so the pinky plays the cannon fodder role. sorry for beating a dead pinkie, but i don't get this overuse of pinkies. they're best used to deny the player space and absorb his shots, while other monsters do the killing. the common pinkie alone is a pretty useless creature, it's a melee only monster that sucks at melee and can bite the player only if he stands still. now one could argue this was 1995 and the mappers were less experienced and so were the players, but it's not something even novice player couldn't notice, that pinkies alone right in front of a gun are cannon fodder and ssg-ing them to no end is much less fun than the admittedly hilarious zombie massacres in tic's maps. at least, the overpowered flamethrower (i estimated 2x plasma gun, was amazed to read it's actually 3x) significantly cut down the time needed to deal with them. now if only the teleports worked and didn't spew them out over several minutes... 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Salt-Man Z Posted August 2, 2017 Blitzed through maps 11-16 (+31) of this in the last two evenings. The back half contains some decently-strong maps, including one or two "Oh, that's where this map was from!" moments for me. MAP31 was dreadfully dull on continuous. And the IoS was pretty lame. It's ridiculously uninvolved, and I still hate for making me wait on a lift while an entire room of bastards shoots me in the back. Overall, a set that's shows its age a bit, but is still pretty fun to play. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
