Pirx Posted July 29, 2017 Thanks :) Well this boss battle topic has been discussed lately, here is a good list for everything without an icon 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
valkiriforce Posted July 30, 2017 Some of the Icon encounters I enjoyed: Memento Mori: Viper had a really cool setup with a mansion full of rockets/ammo and lots of monsters surrounding and entering the complex while you manage to fire rockets at the Icon itself, and it surprisingly spits rockets right back at you! TNT: Evilution: Last Call actually having a level to play leading up to the climax. You don't need to time rockets just right, you just have to stand on the right place on the staircase and open fire after clearing out surrounding enemies. Doom 2 The Way Id Did: Unique setup that was actually fun and once again doesn't rely on timing your rockets on a moving lift - which has always been my least favorite thing about Icon maps in general. Clearing the exterior areas before teleporting exactly in the right spot for firing rockets (with a possible consequence of hitting yourself!) was satisfying enough for me. Doom 2 Reloaded: Lots of action leading up to the eventual Icon encounter. It even has a Cyberdemon and Spider Mastermind showdown on both sides of the Icon which I thought was pretty cool. For the most part I don't mind Icon maps as long as they're executed well enough; although I also really like last maps that just have a lot of action going on like Scythe's last map, or PSX Doom's Redemption Denied or even Doom 64's last level where you fought a bunch of enemies before the real final boss shows up. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
NeedHealth Posted July 30, 2017 (edited) The original IoS would have have been more fun had id elaborated on it, and created maybe half a normal (id) level - possibly include the Cyberdemon and Spiderdemon. Edited July 30, 2017 by NeedHealth 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

There's a cyberdemon standing in front of the target. IIRC, you have to kill him before your rockets can reach the IoS. 21 hours ago, valkiriforce said: TNT: Evilution: Last Call actually having a level to play leading up to the climax. Aeternum had an IoS where you just "stand in the right spot," but I thought it was too easy (you teleport to the "right spot" and just shoot rockets without moving). On the other hand, it wasn't a moving platform, so I guess that's a good thing. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Erick Posted July 31, 2017 The Icon of Sin even back then was a stale idea for a boss. It's just a wall with a hole on its head for a boss that spawns an infinite number of enemies until you kill it with a Rocket Launcher. What boggles me is that in the start of the map you start with all the weapons in the game with some megaspheres and yet only the Rocket Launcher is needed to kill it. Maybe the level itself would be fine if there was like some climax where you go penetrate Hell's last defense as you pretty much kill some Cyberdemons and Spider Masterminds (Which MAP28 and MAP29 kind of tried to do but meh), but as it is, you just start with everything you need, go press a switch, rise up an elevator as enemies shoot you from below, and you are finished. In a nutshell, stale boss then, stale boss now. At the very least custom levels created better set-ups and the likes to make the concept more interesting. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Some are pretty cool like Swift Death's encounter. I also don't mind the ones who nerf Romero's HP down to nothing so it doesn't involve me timing a ton of rockets into a tiny hole while being bombarded by Lost Souls. Valiant's MAP30 was incredible. I'd take the Supervile over a Romero fight anyday. Fortunately Doom 64 has a proper boss like Valiant as well. No IoS fight there! And yes, Valiant MAP30 is indeed incredible. Fighting that guy after clearing the rest of the maps on UV just feels so rewarding. It was like playing a new game again. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
AdirBlaz Posted August 3, 2017 I'm generally a 50/50 on the good/bad opinions. I suppose it just depends on how well the fight is made. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

I'll appreciate a well-made IoS map, but it seems like most of them are either repeats of Doom2 map 30, or too simple & easy, or have lame tricks to them, etc. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
