printz Posted August 16, 2017 Is there a demo recording compatible source port or feature which takes care to count each time you kill a monster who hasn't respawned yet, and notifies you when you reach such 100% kills? Something like this would make nightmare-max challenges feasible and not solvable by grinding respawns. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Diabolución Posted August 16, 2017 PrBoom-Plus (not classic PrBoom) does that more or less, provided that you enable Smart Totals (second page of Status Bar / Hud options) and switch to the Boom Hud. Then, purple digits for kills mean every unique enemy has been killed at least once. If you prefer the classic status bar, stats shown in automap are the “smart” ones, no matter if you do / don´t enable Smart Totals. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
fabian Posted August 17, 2017 Crispy counts respawned monsters in their own variable that's separated by a '+' sign from the "regular" kills in the map statistics in the Automap. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
kb1 Posted August 17, 2017 This is probably a dumb question, but here goes: Why play a respawn mode if you just want to kill the originally-spawned monsters? The -fast parameter gives you the speed of Nightmare, without the respawns. I mean, you can't even visually tell which is which, normally,, which would lead you to just keep killing every monster you see, possibly over and over, until you happen to hit that one original monster. I guess I'm missing something - it just doesn't seem like a lot of fun. Maybe, if the respawned monsters looked different, it might work. At one time, KBDoom rendered respawned monsters translucent. The idea was that it would look like the Arch-Vile had resurrected the monster's ghost. This would have been cool if the original body stayed there, but, instead, the original monster just turns see-through and starts walking. I may have to re-think that. Of course, this doesn't apply to Nightmare respawns. But, if you could differentiate between original monsters vs. respawns, I suppose a Nightmare-max challenge would be a lot more fun. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
