New speedrunning doom ports

Recommended Posts

Hello crazy speedrunning community,

a question which is wandering around in my head currently is the following:

from what I can see almost nobody is using vanilla doom anymore for speedrunning but (new?) ports called CNDoom and crispy doom (at least for movie runs).

My question is can you compare records made with these modern ports to records with vanilla?

If I might guess I think in terms of gameplay they are more or less the same (also demo playback with vanilla possible?), but the input might not

be the same which maybe has the effect that for example gliding is easier with newer ports.

Some people still use true vanilla, such as jcd and ch0ww.  I'm not sure exactly what you mean by the input not being the same.  Keyboards still have keys.  Mice are obviously a million times better than they were in the 90s, so it isn't possible to have the same input there unless you buy an antique mouse and plug it into your 90s computer for some floppy disk recording.

As far as comparison, it's pretty easy to tell by a person's movement who is better than whom.  You can't judge that by a run's time anyway, since it has many factors in addition to skill (new tricks, different standards, better luck).

Anyway the important thing to remember is ocelot is the best of all time and everyone else is bad, there's your comparison :^)

New source ports have a lot smoother movement than vanilla. Just check any demo that has vertical mouse movement on (or uses mouse strafe), and you will see that the MF and SL/SR commands will have jumps in vanilla demos.

Well, a better time is a better time, but comparing demos across eras should always go with an asterisk that explains the context. Standards have been shifting slowly as hardware evolved and new techniques discovered.

If I'm not mistaken Crispy Doom lets you increase the resolution? That would make a big difference in maps with faraway monsters.

Where does that difference come from? Is it the polling rate for inputs?
