Recommend me Anime!

SOSU

Recommended Posts

I don't watch much anime at all but I have watched Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Cowboy Bebop and the original run of Fist of the North Star.

With that said, I'm looking for recommendations like those, Golgo 13 is on the watch list as well as Berserk so if anyone has any suggestions I'm all ears.

Hmm... How 'bout Serial Experiments Lain or Lupin III, mayhaps? I watched plenty of clips, and those seem to fit your requirements.

EDIT: Golgo 13 seems like another best fit aswell.

Serial Experiments Lain

Saw that one already. It was pretty good!

I was expecting it to be much more difficult to follow, but thankfully, it turned out not to be the case, so long as you accept the dream logic.

PRESENT DAY, HUHUHU! PRESENT TIME!

It's a damn irony that the rights-holders have made Lain NFTs (at least from what I've heard).

Unless those right-holders happen to be the Knights of Eastern Calculus.

Well, in that case it's totally unjustified.

Unless she thinks it might be worth some ka-ching by selling it.

Same, though it's more that I struggle to balance doing the things I enjoy.

Personal recommendation For both the OP and Josh:

  • Bungo stray dogs. I went into this expecting nothing and discovered one of my favourite series ever. It has so much charm and personality, and I like almost every character. Highly underrated. Dub is great too
  • Vinland saga( with the Netflix dub). I started off having mixed feelings about this one, but then grew to love this show dearly. It's a revenge story done well.
  • Cowboy bebop. Not by any means a perfect show, but it is fun. I love most of the main cast. Also, Steve Blum.

When I started watching Garasaki, I was expecting a Neon Evangelion-like mecha anime. For the most part, I got just that, minus Gainax's trademark clip shows. What I was not expecting, however, was the show to suddenly become about Japan's ability to force austerity measures upon its people just for the sake of starting a trade war with the United States. Like, I kid you not. The whole subplot comes out of nowhere and starts taking precedence over the main plot, then gets neatly resolved in the show's penultimate episode and has no bearing whatsoever on the actual ending.

It is not quite as offensive as, say, the Angel Cop OAVs openly blaming the Jews for what is happening, but still, what the fuck?

I wanted to ask for anime recommendations, so I hope nobody minds me bumping this thread.

Spy x Family's Season 2 has just started and it is as delightful as ever, but I am looking for other animes to watch while I wait for the next episode. I am not really into shonen animes these days, so no One Piece, Bleach, Naruto/Boruto, One-Punch Man and such for me.

Any more suggestions?

I've only recently been dipping my toes into anime, but here's my recommendations that illustrate what kind of fucked up person I am.

Neon Genesis Evangelion: a must-watch just so you can say you've seen it. The obvious method would be to watch it on Netflix, but if you can acquire a copy of the show that has the director's cut versions of episodes 21-24 do that instead. Otherwise you'll have to watch Death/Rebirth, which is mostly a recap film to build hype for The End of Evangelion but includes additional footage that was later included into Platinum boxset releases of the show for eps 21-24. Once you've seen the series and ending movie, then watch the Rebuild of Evangelion series of movies. These are not remakes in the traditional sense; the first movie basically is, but it goes wildly off the rails at the end of the second. You may also want to consider tracking down some of the manga -- the adaptation of the show is the obvious one but there's some other, weirder shit like Campus Apocalypse and Angelic Days. This is my favorite anime and I'm happy to talk anyone's ear off about it.

(If you like what Hideaki Anno did with this series -- and want to see what took him so long to make the 4th Rebuild -- then watch his live-action film Shin Godzilla, which has a lot of his personal stamp on it while also being a biting commentary on Fukushima and the government response.)

Another: As horror anime goes this one is a slow burn that takes the basic selling point of Final Destination (read: absurd lethal freak accidents) and goes some dark places with a really moody, atmospheric mystery with a slightly gothic flavor.

Monster: At 74 episodes it can seem intimidating, but there isn't a single episode here that could be considered "filler" -- they all introduce characters and themes that become important at some point or other later down the line. Treat it as a multi-season show with a few distinct arcs that all wrap up eventually. It's basically The Fugitive meets The Omen with a touch of Halloween. Great stuff and really grounded and realistic compared to other anime.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury: There are six million Gundam series and only half of them share a universe. This isn't one of them; slightly less toyetic mecha designs and a story that goes into some of the same territory as Evangelion are the cherry on top of a rare canon queer relationship that is just totally sweet.

Sailor Moon (seasons 1-3): I know, I know. Trust me. And trust me when I say the Viz dub is a masterpiece. Yes, the show has a lot of filler, but that's kind of the fun of it, because we get to watch the characters interact and bounce off each other and slowly grow as people. And Usagi is a mood at all times. I haven't seen past season 3, but it tends to be most peoples' favorite, mostly because it's the darkest and most mature one.

Psycho Pass: The first of several series written or created by Gen Urobuchi I'm going to recommend. Urobuchi has a reputation for killing off beloved characters, often quite early, earning him the name of "Urobutcher." This one is essentially an anime take on Minority Report -- a future Japan under the watchful eye of an automated system that prevents crime by being able to scan people's mental state and swooping in with preventative mental health care; or, if the system deems the subject too far gone, sending in Public Safety to kill them. A rookie agent joins the Public Safety Bureau and immediately notices how fucked up this is. Don't let anyone tell you the first season is the only good one. (The second season is rather mid but it introduces several new characters who will become mainstays of the show. Season 3 switches things up a lot and I admit I had to let it grow on me, mostly because it sidelined the main character of the first two seasons.)

Puella Magi Madoka Magica: If Sailor Moon was too saccharine for you (how??) then give this a try, a brutal deconstruction of the magical girl genre (and written by Urobuchi.) It pretty much does a deep dive into what it actually means to be a magical girl (in this context, magical girls are a genre of superhero anime.) Once you finish the series, watch the movie, and if you want more after that, then watch Magia Record, which is an AU based on the mobile game. I only saw the first season of that but I had a good time.

Aldnoah:Zero: Another Urobuchi creation, though he only wrote the first three episodes. On its surface it's a rather bog standard military-sci-fi show, complete with interplanetary warfare between Earth and former Mars colonists and giant mecha, but it explores the nature of loyalty and class while also depicting a neurodivergent hero.

As good as your suggestion is, sadly that won't do. 'Lil bro would definitely call it quits right at the opening.

Blue Gender is neat. Think of it as Final Fantasy: Spirits Within with Starship Troopers-style monsters and some Neon Genesis Evangelion influence.

Or rather the second half is neat, as the first half, unfortunately, is kind of a slog where there is little story progression besides getting from point A to point B and every supporting character is made to be expendable, meaning that they are either killed off shortly after their introduction or in one specific case are removed from the show alogether without much of an explanation. Only when the protagonists finally get to Second Earth does the plot actually get going for real, which unfortunately happens right around the series midpoint. Still, I would not necessarily recommend skipping the first half, since there is lot of character development happening between the two leads that gets to pay off later on.

And before any of you ask, no, I have no clue why it is called "Blue Gender". Given how full of badly-written English the show is ("DTNAITE"), I would not rule out the possibility that "Gender" is a typo and the writers meant to say "Genes", which would have made a lot more sense.

aight. I don't really watch that much Anime now, I just watch some highlight clip on youtube, I wanna devote more time into Mapping.

I used to watch a lot before I start indulge in the Doom saga, particular those Isekai one, I know they pretty shite, but I just love watch the protagonist running around with level 9999+

in any case, hmm...recommendations... idk what age of Anime the OP want, I know 0 thing about 80~90s Anime, since I ain't here yet, beside maybe initial D which my dad was big fan of. Two show that I still remember are the Food War, and the GATE. Food War is like the Anime to eat your lunch with, and it has like 5 seasons, although the "reaction" is a bit obnoxious. GATE is like your average overpower Isekei story, except the protagonist is the entire Japanese Self Defense Force.

One anime I would really want to watch is Mister Ajikko (essentially a proto-Food Wars), but alas, as far as I am aware, it has never been dubbed in English and the only subbed version I can find has terribly-translated subtitles.

I am currently watching Uchuusen Sagittarius, a fascinating late 80s anime for children that deal with surprisingly mature themes nonetheless, such as war, death, ecological devastation, colonialism, corporate greed, fascism and basically every by-product of capitalism. Because of the anthromorphic cast, the show could be best summed up as DuckTales meets Star Fox, except the protagonists are overworked blue-collar astronauts going on all sorts of wacky adventures to make ends meet. Sadly, it does not appear to have ever been dubbed in English.

If you like that you owe it to yourself to see Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (the 2000 film -- the 80s one is okay, but the 2000 one is a masterpiece.)

Memories anthology

It has three sci-fi like stories in different genres

First one is Magnetic rose, its about space garbage collectors, its the best one in the anthology and made by Satoshi Kon and music written by Yoko Kanno.

Second one is Stink-Bomb its a comedy about labarotory workers, society and government.

Third one is Cannon fodder, its visually unique, reminds me of some late soviet animation which is kinda ironic, because a lot of early Anime styles were inspired by Soviet children cartoon The Snow Queen(you could try watching it aswell)

Spirited Away is something I recommend to everyone. It's a very atmospheric and mysterious adventure. My favorite by far.

I didn't watch much anime, but out of what I watched I can recommend A Certain Magical Index and A Certain Scientific Railgun (the first 2 seasons of each, at least). These are a mix of sci-fi, fantasy, comedy, action, everything basically, there's something for everyone. I also liked Fate/stay night a lot, idk what genre that is tho. Another is a good horror anime indeed. Would also recommend LWA, but you watched it already.

One thing I have to say though, I do NOT recommend Neon Genesis Evangelion, unless you're into mindscrews. Otherwise it's very disappointing and pointless. And it doesn't help that at least half of its fans that I've met are insufferable people.

I'm looking for anime to watch with my brother,he uses them to help him sleep but recently he couldn't sleep that well because we all out of anime to watch.

So help me find some super specific anime to watch with him! :D

Rules:

No child main characters (he can't stand children in any kind of media)

No cutesy artstyle (so you can't recommend 99% of anime XD )

No pederast shit >:O (series full of fanservice or weird shit like pedophilia and incest)

No covoluted plots (he is half asleep when we watch anime so lotgh levels of dialogue are a bit too much)

Nothing that well known (berserk, hnk etc.. we already watched most of them)

No movies (we need series that last long)

Hope you can help me C:

I got one that fulfills all of those requirements and then some:

Legend of the Galactic Heroes / 銀河英雄伝説 / Ginga Eiyū Densetsu. Make sure you're watching the release that ran from December 1988 through March 1997, not the later movies.

Yang Wen-li has to be one of the greatest protagonists in anime.

Because that's the original series, which is the iconic one.  The later movies are just prequels.

Anyways, I'm not sure if @SOSU is fine with this though. Excerpt from his rules list:

SOSU created this thread in 2017 and it was dormant for years until Rudolph revived it. So this means Rudolph is practically the new OP and recommendations are primarily for him.
