Fake transparent walls in vanilla?

Has anyone managed to achieve a good enough illusion of transparency in vanilla? Like maybe with a clever arrangement of middle textures that kind of makes you feel like you're looking through a glass window? Any notable attempts?

Other than a dither pattern (which would look pretty awful), I can't think of any way to fake translucency, or any real attempts to do so.

Or if you mean transparent as in perfectly clear, then... just use a midtexture with a hole in it I suppose?

Yeah, I was thinking of some pattern with holes you can see through. Haven't yet tested anything though, maybe it's indeed a bad idea. :D

I think you could crudely imply window transparency with a symbolic reflective visual, usually in the form of white diagonal pixels. Not very effective, though.

It can work if you're going for a weird 90's vibe.

Isn't this what Doom is all about, if the overall statements in the UDMF thread are to be believed?

If you're going for windows such as that, you might want to make it so you can't shoot through it. In vanilla, the best way to do this is a self-referencing sector (it's been a while since I used those).

IMO the best "glass" texture is the one in Evilution where it has the little UAC logo watermark on the corner. I'm not sure why the watermark makes it look like glass to me, but it does. Window frames without that watermark just look like windowframes with no glass.

I've never come up with any other way to do nice clean transparent glass in doom unless you want to put cracks or blood or bulletholes in it. I think you just need to physically see something on it so the player knows its there. Otherwise its just nothing.

Exactly.

That's because your brain tells you the watermark is something printed on glass.
