What was the mystery behind the rush of release of 3DO,32X and Saturn Doom?

Recommended Posts

The Saturn version wasn't rushed, it was crippled by Carmack. The story goes that they presented a buttery smooth version of Doom running on the Saturn that he turned down due to affine texturing and forbid them to use the Saturn's GPU, leaving it up to the two very weak cores.

The 32X port was rushed to get the game out in time for the 32X launch date, while the sole developer of the 3DO port, Bill/Rebecca Heineman, only had highly constrained schedule of ten weeks for the development. (The sad thing is that, the 32X port was actually going to resemble the PC version more than the Jaguar version the final release is based on, as can be read in this article from The DOOM Wiki.)

As for the Saturn port, I'll follow @MetroidJunkie's explanation.

Edit:What was the reason for the poorer quality of PSX Hexen?

I attempted to look into the workings of the PSX port of Hexen last year in this thread. Ultimately, I believe that the port is crippled because of the combination of using the LEAFS lump to render levels and Hexen's own ACS. The game notably slows to a crawl whenever any large scripting event takes place while a lot is being rendered on screen, yet opening the automap or turning to face a wall will speed up the scripting process to it's regular speed. The fact that the developers used the retail beta version as the source to work from instead of the finished retail version could be a factor as well.

This video is one of (or maybe the ONLY) coder behind the 3DO DooM and she tells the tale of how hard it was making the port.

The fact is, she is the only coder.

A good question would be why was Doom released in 1994 - 1996 and 1997 on those consoles and not Doom II? Please port a 4 year old game over! Or did they intend for Doom II but the consoles didn't survive? If anything Doom 1 on those lesser consoles sold copies of Doom II on PC when the console players get their first taste of DOOM and what games can be on PC.
