Favorite Doom Megawads

What are your top ten favorite Doom/Doom II megawads, total conversions, or episodes? That's right, no single levels. Here are my 10 favorite and why (in no particular order):

1. 2002 A Doom Odyssey - Just about everything is right - fantastic design, great architecture, and awesome music.

2. Memento Mori II - "The best levels in any add-on." Even better than the original. Plus great architecture, music, and much more. On par with 2002 ADO.

3. WolfenDOOM - How would it feel to convert this World War 2 setting classic and revise it for the Doom engine?

4. Requiem - Great levels, music, and architecture. Pretty much everything is great.

5. Memento Mori - Great add-on, but not to the exact same standards as it's sequel.

6. Plutonia (Final Doom) - A very tough pack with execellent design.

7. TNT: Evilution (Final Doom) - Execllent design, need to say more?

8. Vengeance - Execellent design, many levels on par with (if not better than) ID's original.

9. Alien Vendetta - 32 huge excellent levels, pluss great music and architecture.

10. Eternal Doom - Great and VERY challenging pack.

There are many other great packs, but those 10 really stood out for me. How about you?

Dear lord, this again.
I dont play many megawads all the way through, I just play the first few levels and i get bored. I think 3-7 level wads are the best. But i did get very far in Icarus, it was really fun, so its my favorite. The other megawads are just more boring levels

The New Doom

OMG that has got to be the worst thing i've ever played (depending on which "new doom" i got (1337.wad)) Laughingly called a Megawad as I saw nothing being so "Mega" about it, looks more like someone's very first attempts for a map.

But lately, I've been hearing of a different version of 1337.wad- that medieval thing that i cannot get any info about, nor the thing itself- just the rants and raves from my colleagues here at DW. WTF is going on?!? Some great conspiracy?!? Oy...

1337.wad is a joke wad; it's made by (from what I understand) non
retarded, competant level designers. It was made as a prank.

I think that Medieval comment was just for playing along with the joke.

Sorry, I made a "medieval" comment. You see, many years ago, when I was a lad, 1337 was believed by many to be a number (or a year). And yes, I was playing along with the joke.

I do vaguely recall a "megawad" from the mid-1990s that (IIRC) was called newdoom.wad. It actually came packaged with an additional wad that had lame porn textures, but you could play the levels without it (but it too was pretty lame).

Yes, 1337.wad is a joke - and quite a funny one, especially to those of us who remember a lot of the awful pwads that were released in 1994 and 1995. "90% of PWADS are crap!" - John Carmack

2002ADO's architectures design is not as good as Hell Revealed II, or Alien Vendetta is.

How could you miss Hell Revealed...if you really like to play Doom it has to be in the top three...

No, but it's really really faithful to the original game. Each level, IMO,
matches the original episode styles perfectly.

1337 gets the title of 'silliest (mega)wad ever'....

AFAIK the only competition for that coveted title is from THISSUXX.WAD - have you ever played that? Possibly not quite as outrageous, but IIRC it did have 32 maps, all different. Oh yes, and a *great* music replacement.

Maybe we should hold a "stupidest joke megawad" competition. :p

Well, I've just downloaded THISSUXX.WAD (it's in the archives) and "played" it again. It's definitely a strong contender. The maps are indeed all different, although two of them are almost identical. The maps are all very small though - nothing to rival the mindless stupidity of 1337.wad's map21. Some of them have a bit of gameplay.

No no no, I meant who could *make* the stupidest one. :P

THISSUXX.WAD does definately "SUXX", though. Joke wads are so funny;
satire of any sort is funny.... Maybe I'll make one as a time killer. :)

However, DOOMJR.WAD is quite possibly *not* a joke, which is just sad.
Worst. Megawad. Ever. One of the levels is a 100unit long hallway...
Another is a reeeeeaaaallllllllyyyy long (!!) spiral hallway. There's
no Icon of Sin or boss of any kind, and the kid who made it didn't know
about secret levels.

O_o

Did you know that Cranky Steve's Haunted Whorehouse is back online? The URL is: http://www.somethingawful.com/cranky/
It's a shame he doesn't review Doom maps, but perhaps there are too few released nowadays that would meet his criteria. "Pain Level: Having my penis super-glued to a cinder block while being hung from a three-story building by meathooks." Wow.

I'll check that one out.

I wonder if that is really "Weeds"

You mean the guy who made the music for Eternal? Yes: the e-mail address in the textfile matches that given on the TeamTNT site.

hehe

CrankySteve's would be worth a lot more if it had real reviews as well.
at least they really do focus on the worst... and believe me, they know their subject matter!

It certainly looks like it wasn't intended as a joke, which makes it so much more impressive. I liked that "door" in map29. Did you look at the three lmps included in the zip? The guy seems to use the advanced technique of "running" about as often as most Doomers use rocket jumps and SR50 - the attempt to avoid a revenant missile by walking briskly away from it was funny. This possibly had an impact on his map design. Maybe they were intended as "stroller" demos though.
