'bout A:CM, Randy even claimed at one point that they put money they made off of Borderlands into it, lmao.

Yeah uh, in this case he might as well explain why the 2011 and 2012 versions look and play (just notice the AI along other things...) much better than what the final product. Yes, it's only expected for games to change, sometimes drastically during development, but like this? And then they desperately tried to "patch" it with GB sized updates.

That 2012 interview with Randy is exactly why nobody believes him. He acts so excited and passionate about the project he's working on but when it came to the release of the game and the aftermath of what happened, he acts completely bereft of any responsibility for what happened to the product and puts all the blame on the people calling him a liar rather than accepting the fact that he screwed up.

If Randy would have come out after Colonial Marines and said "I screwed this up, I apologize and I'm going to try to make it right in the future" I think people would be a little more forgiving towards him but that is not what he did. Since the release of Colonial Marines, he has done everything humanly possible to discredit himself as a reasonable person and a competent developer.

He didn't have to care much anyway, like I said, it's not like the builds shown at E3 and those that followed were even made by them... They didn't have much input, let alone work on the actual game, until close to the end of the development cycle.

Fred is a super excited and passionate fanboy/company owner that has a few times been proven to lie or embelish the truth.

Randy Pitchford has been shown to completely lie and deny many things even when more proven people say contradictory statements, even if its something superfluous as where the name Gearbox originated.

I would take Fred's word over his, however based on what some developers who actually worked on DNF one point or another have said, it wasn't quite "90% complete" and probably more 60-70

I'm kinda curious about how this would be. I recently got around to playing Duke Nukem Forever on PS3, and yeah... we all know how that game turned out... I admit, however, that it is still cool to play it in a way. Even in bad games I find the character of Duke Nukem hard to hate, and shooting the pigs is always fun.

I'd say DNF's shooting is much much worse than Doom 3's, and I wouldn't really call D3's shooting bland I have played a lot more far worse shooting games than it.

Here's a small update compiling some stuff from the 3DR Discord and stuff from RPG Codex.

This is from an ex-level designer that worked on Duke Nukem Forever, this is from a post he made on Duke4.

A little update from Fred.

Here's a screenshot of the DNF editor, showing a build of Duke Nukem Forever a year before the final release (dated January 4th, 2010).

I think @wheresthebeef is right in saying it's probably 60-70% complete, it wouldn't surprise me if Fred over-exaggerated how complete the builds are. With that being said, I think it's safe to say there is more content there than just what we saw in the trailers. Randy did say something's coming (I know that doesn't mean much but I'm trying to be hopeful dammit) so we're just going to have to wait and see what they're going to release and hope they don't pull some shit and say "it would be disrespectful to the original developers to release these unfinished builds" or something like that.

Edit: My apologies there was an accident posting this. It should be fixed now.

Well, they did use a heavily modified Unreal Engine 1.5 (the same engine that powers Postal 2) for the later and final builds of DNF.

Also Fred, why do you do this to us, you fufu fanboy.

I figured it might've used the same version of the Unreal engine as Raven Shield, XIII, Republic Commando and Devastation to name a few.

Sad there are no updates about those builds...

I'm sorry there have been no updates but there's nothing more to say. No word from 3D Realms or gearbox on anything about these builds in about a month and there's been no leaks or anything from Duke4.net. Right now this is still up in the air, however, if something changes I will gladly update this thread.

Well, speak of the devil.

Spoiler

It looks like if we are going to get anything from these builds we are going to have to pay for it. I can't say that's an ideal scenario especially since Randy is repeating what he said in the past about the state of the builds not being as complete as we were previously told. And there's something still bothering me, why would Randy say Fred and Charlie are lying about how complete the builds are?

Randy keeps saying there's barely any content to these builds, why would Fred and Charlie lie about how complete the builds are? they don't have a stake in Duke success anymore. And another question is if Fred and Charlie are telling the truth why would Randy want to dismiss their claims? A part of me just refuses to believe they worked on the 2001 version of DNF for almost 2 years and there's nothing there? I find that a bit hard to believe.

So who's telling the truth? I don't know. Right now this is mostly based on who you believe more, given the fact Fred has been more willing to show us some of this stuff make's me think people or going to be more inclined to believe him and a lot of people are not going to believe Randy on the basis of what he's done in the past.

I don't know, it doesn't sound like he's bullshitting. I mean, the message is not pampered by corporate speech for starters.

Frederik Also sounds like the overly-excited, hyperbolic type too. I have the feeling the truth is somewhere in the middle.

@DooM_RO I think you're right. But if there's more to the game than what Randy has said it's going to look pretty bad on his part, it's not like Fred is the only one saying there's more of the game there, Randy name drop Charlie. Charlie Wiederhold was an ex-dev that worked on DNF and he also commented on what Randy and Fred said:

I understand that people hates Randy Pitchford for bad things he did. But please, don't hate him that much, you remind me situation with Diekatana. Forgive him "a little", lol.

I think if we have no choice for "free" release, so...Kickstarter?

Ok, you've got me. I'm hating him again too, lol (just joking).

Yeah, that's...need more time. I mean, Daikatana was released 18 years ago. We need 13 years to stop hating Randy for this ;)

Wait, 13 years...HALF-LIFE 3 CONFIRMED.

It isn't up to him. Randy is the one holding it back. Frederik worked with Devolver to release 10 builds of Shadow Warrior 1997 for free last year. No money exchanged hands, it was all done for free as fan service. This is the same offer he's made to Randy and Gearbox but they have no interest in any of unless they can somehow sell it - even when Frederik has offered to do any and all necessary work for a release for free.

On the other hand you could try asking Randy why he's acting like a dick: randy.pitchford@gearboxsoftware.com http://www.twitter.com/duvalmagic

I was reading this thread and decided to email him about it. He gave me a long explanation full of BS.

I know it's BS because I saw the picture of some guy's hard drive labeled "DukeBackup" filled with files from (mostly) 2001, so I'm not convinced with RP's explanation.

I don't hate Randy. I don't hate Duke Forever or Aliens: Colonial Marines. Like a lot of people I was hyped for both games... but then after maybe 6+ years of remembering once a year hey what ever happened to that game... I just stopped caring. All my own hype was long gone. I'd rather play Duke Forever and Aliens: Colonial Marines than a lot of indie FPS out there. In fact I'd rather play ACM or D4E than Borderlands. There's no chance I'll ever play BattleBourne and I think I own it thanks to bundles.

It's still fun to see the ACM issue got to the point where Sega was sued and then sued GearBox. I'm shocked anyone puts up with that company.

Oh yeah and now they have Desert Bus too! Bringing all the dead nerd franchises back from the grave!

I don't care how unfinished it is. Gearbox can finish it and put it on Steam. If not, release it and let the fans finish it.

If it really is such a mess THEN I STILL WANNA SEE THE FUCKING MESS!!
