(I guess apparently this post was about the announcement of Doom 3?)
Guest Archvile Posted June 1, 2000 Sorry for that three-post thing. I don't know how that happened. The most recent one is the one that was supposed to be there. Link to comment
Guest Anonymous User Posted June 1, 2000 Actually in original DOOM there were lots of enemies at the same time, much more enemies than it ever was in quake due to polygon counts. And if they want somewhat semismart AI high polygon enemies are gonna cause real nasty slowdowns, but hell yeah, they better make it good and force ppl buy expensive computers than making it a lame quake thing all over again. Guest Anonymous User Posted June 1, 2000 this seems to me like a "mise en scene" some kinda made u thing , : "team heroically stnds up , poor guy gets fired cos of that" no im sure he was fired for other reasons or such, and they decided to disguise it up and to start a hype campain around d2k already. But i admit i am some paranoiac character but i lost faith in id since quake 2 and even more since quake 3 Link to comment
Jon Posted June 1, 2000 its a fair argument that some people wont want new doom stuff covered on doomworld- after all it is dedicated to the old dooms and always has been. Obviously it will cover the new games, because of financial pressure (heh) but thats not to say that people should all agree with it. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Link to comment
Guest Rhoq Posted June 1, 2000 Hasn't ID always made an impact with the games they release. For those of you who may doubt in the next DOOM being less than outstanding, I really don't think ID would take on a project like this without fully intending to make it as awesome as their original revolutionary game, DOOM. And also, I think this may even turn attension of those who have forgotton DOOM amidst their polygons and whatnot to the real DOOM community who has faithful to the game since its release several years ago. I am hoping that the new DOOM will not overshadow the classic DOOM. But I hope that they will play off each other, and keep the community thriving. Link to comment
Guest E1ghtball Posted June 1, 2000 Man.... this is sooo cool. I can only hope that when Carmac says "new hires" he means Romero and the rest of the old team... I know he doesn't but I can dream. stphrz has a very good point about stuff looking ugly at id and the fact that this game may not even be made, but once again, we can only hope. I can't believe they fired Steed, he was "da man" at his job.... Wouldn't it be cool to see DooM as it was intended to be, ala the DooM bible? Link to comment
Guest toadwarrior Posted June 1, 2000 I've been playing Doom for years and still playing it(Dooom 95)and this new game should kick ass. Gamespy is sure to come up with a water down "we're the coolest" Doom site. I sure hope you guys remember to tell these newbies to come here, to the real Doom site. :) Link to comment
Guest Anonymous User Posted June 1, 2000 >> Wouldn't it be cool to see DooM as it was intended to be, ala the DooM bible? << That was all Tom Hall - and a lot of that stuff ended up being used in Rise of the Triad. I can't imagine id wanting to go back to that, it would probably require 'em to credit Tom. :) Joe Siegler 3D Realms Link to comment
Guest Risen Posted June 1, 2000 Well, it's a long way off so I'm not about ready to pass judgements. I think the idea of writing a page to tell them our ideas about what makes Doom the best is a great idea. Someone start a forum or maybe Ling can add a Doomworld section for it. Doom was the first to allow real extendabiliy, this would kinda be like doing it backwards. Best of luck to id. All I can say is I better not have to upgrade my 450MHz/Viper V770 Ultra to run it. :) Link to comment
Guest Anonymous User Posted June 1, 2000 Hey, ID is not the same as it was in good old times when Doom was made. The only guy that I really respect in ID is Carmack, but he can make engines, NOT games. I don't trust ID after dull Q2 and Q3, so I don't even hope they will make a game that could be compared to Doom. Link to comment
Guest Anonymous User Posted June 1, 2000 Fuck yea. This is the greatest thing that's happened since doom! :) I can't fucking wait for the year or two that this will take! However... for those who want doom in Q3... i can't give you that, but my mod is making some of the monsters come back and hopefully a little similar map style! www.thebackburner.com/~spq3 Link to comment
Guest Anonymous User Posted June 1, 2000 Really it was Doom II that threw monsters at you, Doom had fewer monsters at the same time and was the better game IMHO, though I live them both. That said I think id can produce an engine that will be capable of handling enough monsters for Doom III needs, just dont screw it up id! Dooms about atmosphere, great bad guys, (don't think anyones ever topped the doom monsters), fun environments, fast gameplay....fun.....and if they DO screw up, we will always have csdoom :) Link to comment
Guest Wyvern Posted June 1, 2000 Like many have said here already, I GOTTA give some major props to John Carmack and all the supporting crew for taking a stand on developing a new version of the game we all love! It takes some serious balls to do that (well, being an owner of the company helps, too... ;D). I honestly do believe that id would not have even THOUGHT of making a new DooM (I don't care HOW Carmack spells it, dammit. :p) game if they weren't going to put their hearts into it. Think about it. Besides Wolfenstein 3D, DooM put id ON THE MAP. IMO, ever since DooM was released, most (not all) of id's success has been due to the quality game DooM showed the world could be made by id. One of the major factors in me continuing to purchase id software and other merchandise has been due to one underlying fact that I honestly believe they adhere to: LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE. That's why I deeply respect the guys at id. They pretty much got my wanted career facing the software development field. So, in closing, three cheers for id, all hail Carmack, and DOOM LIVES AGAIN!!! Guest Anonymous User Posted June 1, 2000 just a random thought but 1. Doom denied as next game 2. csdoom released (we go ape over it) 3. week later, Doom III released.. ok so I've watched too much X-Files Link to comment
Guest Risen Posted June 1, 2000 Doom was pretty much the father of real multiplayer gaming, but I'm glad to see they're going back for the single-player experience. The other thing no one has said that I've always thought was incredibly important was weapon balance. Each of Doom's weapons was good for a different situation, and they balanced out really well. I haven't seen that balance again since. That's what made Doom's multiplayer so good to begin with, and it may very well be one good reason the rest just don't stack up. Link to comment
Lüt Posted June 1, 2000 Man, come on... this is probably not going to be a very good thing at all. The guys there don't even want to do it, he says that. Plus I guess Carmack was anal enough to fire somebody for disagreeing with him, so apparently the project is completely up to Carmack and we know the crap he turns up. It'll probably be a decent engine showing off stuff that's more out-of-date / underdesigned than Unreal or Half-Life, and they'll sell it on the fact that it's named Doom. And the worst part is going to be all the morons who eat up every single new FPS game going nuts over it. I don't think anybody at ID has what it takes to make Doom-style maps, they should just hire random people from around here who have been with Doom for the last 6 or so years and nothing else. Link to comment
Guest Anonymous User Posted June 1, 2000 All you idiot lamers who think the new Doom will be lame are saying that id is lame, but in fact you are the jerk-faces. Mr. John Carmack knows what went into the first Doom and can put that into the second one just fine, but better. Imagine a game that represents all those late night dreams you had about Doom after playing it until you were ready to pass out. If us, the gamers, can produce a Doom experience that is new and awesome, imagine what the creator of the best FPS of all time can make - and believe me, he will put his heart into it. Stop doubting and support id in their new project! Link to comment
Guest Slipgate Posted June 1, 2000 Wowzers. So they finally did that. I agree about the internal strife being troubling, though. I've saved a text copy of the .plan file update as a piece of history. And let's see how things turn out, shall we? The real American hero, Doom Ma-rine! Err, yeah. Slipgate Link to comment
NiGHTMARE Posted June 1, 2000 The guy who was fired was on Carmack's side, it was Kevin Cloud and the other Carmack, Adrian, who fired Paul Steed. Plus most people here probably don't have a clue how to make true 3D maps (I know I don't :) ) Link to comment
Guest Anonymous User Posted June 1, 2000 Well lets see how id goes on this one: don't forget that Quake 2 has nothing to do with Quake 1, so Doom 3 might not feed the expectations of the nostalgic Doom community who really, in their hearts, just want another Doom 1 with a few more monsters and levels, and some technological enhancements (but not much i don't think). Guest face.uk Posted June 1, 2000 I,ve seen a few comments about eye candy posted here and people seem to forget that doom was eye candy in it's day.Thank god it had the game play too.... Link to comment
Guest Zeku Posted June 1, 2000 There is one more factor that made doom superior to quake, that has not been mentioned anywhere, and that is the fact that explosives did full damage at all times. In quake, the rockets are mindlessly effective because it is realistically never a wrong time to pull the trigger. Even if you are so bad that you fire directly into a wall or their face, you still have an advantage, because anyone near you will take twice as much damage as you, and you will not suicide from your own rocket. Please, don't just mention 'weapon balance.' If you speak to id, explain to them what specifically makes the RL too easy to use in quake. Note to morons: rocket jumping was invented _after_ the 'half damage' gameplay was created, so rocket jumping is NOT the reason that they created this subtle little deception. There are a hundred ways to implement greater vertical mobility, many of which might even make more sense than firing artillery at your feet. Link to comment
Guest Anonymous User Posted June 1, 2000 Oh, how my palms have ached for the cold, hard grips of DOOM's pump shotgun. I believe that id will make this a better game than half-life. I predict they will take Ion Storm's lame sidekicks and shove them up someone's ass. You're going to hit Phobos with a TEAM of badass marine bots. These bots will have personality and you'll go Jesse Ventura "Payback Time" on the dirty hellbeast that kills one of your boys. Human players can jump in and replace a bot on your team. That way, id can design all the levels for coop, whether it's coop with humans or bots. Unless the guy is hit REALLY bad, make him incapacitated so he can just crawl along slowly leaving a bloody trail, screaming in pain. Then a teammate could run for health and get him back on his feet. Can you imagine helping your buddy limp to safety while shooting left handed. They could add a "fire for effect" feature where you blast away with the chaingun to keep the monsters at bay while your team pulls back. I know this is gonna ROCK!! Link to comment
Guest Anonymous User Posted June 1, 2000 finally. this is the day the earth stood still. I have been waiting for this moment for the past 5 years. id will not only raise the bar again, but they will finally be giving everybody in the doom community what they want: a trip back down memory lane to the place we all know and love: DOOM. Thank you once again, id, for making me stay home from school as i had so many times in the past to enjoy this wonderful godsend. -the happiest doomer Link to comment
Guest Karthik Posted June 1, 2000 While writing this I feel like typing NEW DOOM GAME NEW DOOM GAME... like Linguica did. Doom is my all time favourite game, and with the kind of high-quality games that id Software makes - I think Doom III (or whatever it's going to be called) will be an excellent one. Hopefully it will be as fast-paced and as much fun to play as the original games. Could there be a chance of ROBERT PRINCE doing the music? Link to comment
Guest Anonymous User Posted June 1, 2000 I don't know about you, but I'm getting sick of a LOT of the weapons in the new 3D games, and even some of the old Doom ones. If id uses a huge new 3D engine, they should make some kick ass new weapons! With awesome re-loading, too! Have any of you played Perfect Dark on N64? The weapons are outstanding, and so are the re-loading animations. Make cool new weapons with reloading, id! :) Link to comment
