  • Lots of Rage

    kristus

A lot of activity has spurted around the Internet about id Software's new upcoming IP Rage. Some of the buzz claims there will be a coop multiplayer mode, and a release time frame has been set, however unspecific. It's looking to be a 2011 release. You can read and watch all about it at Kotaku, Shacknews, Gametrailers and Eurogamer.

Painkiller wasn't even a very good game. But a starved community of gamers were on it like flies on shit.

I think you're just extremely pretentious. Doom is on this flawless pedestal of mythical perfection and everything else will always suck balls or be mediocre at best.

Doom's fundamentals are upon clearing out room after room, that some will guise into fine works of masturbatory art, but the premise is still the same with Doom as every game in the genre. Regardless of gimmick or what the buttfuck they use to make it seem different, original or artistic.

If videogames are supposed to be poetry in motion than a homeless crackhead is the author of every sonnet.

The difference to me is that DOOM did this well. Painkiller did not, but it didn't matter to some people because "Hey, you're still killing loads of monsters through corridors! It's a return to old shooters!"

I still the remember the "Doom who?" quote on the Painkiller box. Bah.

Actually, Painkiller and Doom is quite different games. Now last years cacoward winner LOS (Lsomething of Satan) was quite the Painkiller Doom mod.

You enter a room, it's box shaped, no interesting layouts what so ever. You can't leave and monsters pour in for a little while and you kill them while metal music is beating in your ears because metal is totally bad ass yeah.
All the monsters are now dead and you can go on to the next box shaped room. Also a checkpoint at every door since otherwise you would have to suffer through it again in case you die.

Legacy of Suffering. And I agree: It was a cross between Painkiller and Doom 3, with the not particularly pleseant warts from both.

That's exactly how Serious Sam felt to me (except that the boxes were usually pretty big but always had a big door at the far side that inexplicably opened independently of all in-world logic when the monster waves had finished). It was just scripted area fight after scripted area fight (getting progressively longer as the game went on) with only very short sequences of exploration and real maps between these scripted battles.

Hell, even Doom3 had some sequences like that - often disguised (eg once all the monsters were dead, the door was unlocked by a new enemy coming in from the other side) but some were just plain old blatant "this exit will only work once the monster waves are defeated" types. One of the early attacks by waves of those annoying spider/tick things was like that IIRC.

On the topic of PK, someone mentioned Necrovision earlier. Apparently it was made by some of the same people that made PK.

I haven't even finished one full level of Necrovision and I already think it's one of the worst FPS games I've ever played.

And now we have a Bulletstorm, a shooter made by PCF and Epic. Wonder if that will be any good.

I still don't understand how that abomination could win a Cacoward... :?

Is it really such a bad thing that people actually enjoyed it, and reminisced upon gameplay of a game the marketing department compared it to? Or is this another one of those situational things where we must argue that the majority of consumers will enjoy anything that is thrown at them and they all eat shit because that is all we see and we are so much more sophisticated than them because we still play this ancient game?

    Run on sentence LOL

I just wished they would stop calling it some kind of DOOM successor. The games are just so different.

But yes, in my mind I know that when I say "different", I mean "one beats the shit out of the other."

I can't say I agree with that. I don't like it how they removed the gore, the gibs and allot of the Satanic visuals from the game so that they could appeal to a larger user base.

When I play a Quake game and I fire a rocket into somebodies face then I want to be rewarded for it by seeing that person's organs fly over my head, instead they just vanish or fall down to the ground like they were hit by a rock.

    Lame.

Plus I think they messed with the weapon balance, thought that might have changed since I last played the game early after Quake Live went online.

Oh shit. Well, that's a good reason to play Quake 3 Arena instead. Quake3 without those Icons of sin isn't Quake3.

Does Quake Live offer single-player, coop, and speedrun gameplays like Doom does? As far as I know it's just deathmatch. It may be a better deathmatch game than Doom; but if you don't care that much about this aspect of the game, it'll lose in comparison.

Quake Live is a game about skill and knowledge of the gameplay, not about visuals. If a minor visual change was enough to put you off then it probably wasn't your sort of game to begin with.

For the better, the shotgun is actually desirable to use now.

It has TDM, CTF and Clan Arena as well. But it's obvious he's comparing the two multiplayer modes seeing as QL is multiplayer only (and it is his opinion too, not fact :p).

Boo fucking hoo, would you like a tissue? Most people turned gibs off anyway back in the Q3A days because they could block your view in a fight with a bunch of people.

QL is great because it's very finely balanced - every weapon has it's own niche and is useful in a certain situation.

Granted there is no SP mode. But man would it be awesome with a single player Quake 3 experience. It's a wet dream of mine to make that game. :D~

Anyway, the game play of QL is so good. That the lack of SP doesn't matter. It's still better than Doom for me. You feel free to not share that sentiment of course. (as long as you don't say UT is better, because then we got a problem. :p)

Yeah playing against real people is a lot better. What's your QL name?

I am able to play QL much more than Doom. 10x at least. I should not wait for next project by Eternal in case of QL. The only thing I need is FFA Frankfurt (or better Russian) server and 10+ lamers there :) I did not play Quake3 at all in Quake3 era though. Quake2 duels ate my brain at that time.

I love huge FFA on asylum, get the Quad then wait by that teleport and instant kills with gauntlet. I got 11 humiliation medals like that, lol.

Back in Q3 days I always played CS... MEMORIES

I don't play any FFA really. Sometimes I can jump in for a romp, but I am really only interested in Duel on pub and if I ever join a clan I could seem myself playing CTF and TDM.

Duels are hard to get into if you aren't really good already, around here anyway.

Yes, I played q2 ONLY duels. If you are skilled, then you will never want to play FFA IMO. In q3 I am average noob and duels are not "so interesting" for me. Also I need ping 5 for comfortable duels heh, but there are no Ukrainian servers. I have ping 35 for Russian servers, 40-45 for German and ~50-70 for others from Europe.
