  • Trent Reznor On Doom3 ?

    Mordeth

There's an interview with NIN's Trent Reznor on Apple.com. Nothing that would normally interest me, except for the following part:

Then he confides that he’s been talking to John Carmack about scoring the music for a new version of Doom. "I would do something like that mainly because it’s a hobby of mine, I appreciate the technology, and it’s fun to work outside Nine Inch Nails once in a while."

Quake was fun because they didn’t want hard-rock goofy music going through the game,” explains Reznor, “it was all about atmosphere at the time."

Thanks to bluesnews.com/]Blue's News for the scoop.

NIN and Doom 3 together... that would be my favourite artist and game ALL IN ONE... holy shit, I gotta go and upgrade now.

Hey Lüt, I have found you can find, Happiness in Slavery.

    Hello,

I wouldn't normally get involved in this stuff, but just a
note to Caleb: You claim that the doom community can make up
its mind about what it thinks about this without Lut or
anyone's help. Well, all Lut and these others are doing IS
showing their own opinions, which is what everyone else is
doing too. People are making up their own minds, just like
you seem to want, but Lut and these "others" you mention
aren't doing anything but ALSO making up their own minds.

    That hardly requires harassing them.

This comment thread, based on the post its a part of, is
GOING to be people discussing their opinions on this
very matter with each other. And that's what's transpiring.
No need to yell and scream at anybody in particular right
now. Your own post where you got upset at Lut and these
others included you stating your own opinion as well, which
is all the ones you are yelling at did.

One of the things that made Doom's music so great is that it scared the &$*$%*@ out of you. Hard Rock/Industrial does not do that. We need something that makes the hair on the back of you neck stand up. eg.. E1M8(Phobos Anomoly) and E2M7(Spawning Vats).

I didn't say that with the intent of pissing off NIN fans, I did it because I don't like the guy. He did pretty good with his first and second records, despite the laughably cheesy drumkits on Broken. The other two are just him PLAYING AROUND! Cripes. That's all I had to say. Usually I prefer a bit of professionalism in my music, but if you guys don't, that's perfectly fine with me.

<HTML>While I think that Bobby coming back for DOOM 3 would be the ultimate I have no problem with Reznor making some DOOM music. If anyone remembers back in '97 + '98 people were always using NIN music in pwads. It was a natural fit to doom's atmosphere. Heck, NIN is already carved into E4M1.

I'm getting sick of "fickle" music listeners. I bet you Lüt is one of those guys who likes a band when it's popular and then jumps the bandwagon for the newest latest crap. How about sticking your balls behind a band you like? So then we can make fun of how they've had ups and downs and the fact they don't fit in with our particular tastes. </HTML>

OK...some ppl like NIN, some doesn't...Who cares if it's NIN or someone else if the music is good? Don't say it'll be crap until you hear it... And it's not done yet...

the Quake1 soundtrack (which I quite enjoyed; excellent post-industrial ambient) was the first time I ever heard of NIN, and I was quite disappointed to find out that the rest of NIN's work was some sort of industrial-degenerated-into-pop... the man wrote some of the "music" for the incredibly shallow marylin manson, mr. "image poorly hiding lack of substance" himself? yuck. But, the Quake music proves that he can do better... Whether his work fits DOOM, we'll have to see; and it's not certain he'll do it, so far.

Just because nobody uses midi tracks in games anymore doesn't mean Bobby Prince can't do the music. Heck, all he has to do is write it. Someone else could do it. My choice would be Sonic Mayhem, who did Quake IIs kickass tracks.

To all you NIN HATERS FUCK YOU AND GET OFF THIS SITE!!!!!NIN is perfect for DOOM and was talor made for it..I dont want pointless hard music when im playin DOOM 3!!!I want music that makes sense, and consistant with the story and atmosphere!!!!DOOM has always been a FPS Horror game with weird demonic shit in it, ambient music fits the scenerio. Im a hardcore DOOM fan myself, but Bobby Prince was good for it's 486 times, the music was good but outdated. Now we have Reznor (who is a damn talented musician)to score ,and updated DOOM with some grim ,moody, kick ass, dark music. Industrial music fit well in the DOOM world also because half(if not most)of the DOOM monsters are BIO-Mechanical demons right?.So NIN could also do the sound effects too!!Hard shit like Zombie or Pantera(all good music)will kill the morbid atmosphere of DOOM. DOOM's history is all about the scare, you will only kill that scare with fast metal.Metal(or hard industrial) worked in Quake 2 because the world was not a horror focus, but more towards science fiction. Instead of fighting Demonic hellspawns(QUAKE), you were fighting mindless cyborgs(QUAKE 2).Besides their was hardly any Hard Rock in DOOM1 or 2????!! PS. Not only should NIN score this game, but also the MOVIE!!!!

i think they should use death metal like morbid angel that way the game would not just be for pussies

this is pointless... if ID decides NIN is ok, they'll do songs for doom3, if ID thinks NIN's music is not ok for doom, they'll choose something else... They wont choose NIN or not if 10 ppl in here are saying "oh no! Not NIN!" and 10 others are saying "Yeah! NIN rules!". It seems that this communauty loves to argue for pointless subjects (remember the revenant's pants or the DooM/DOOM debate?). Who cares??? If the music if good and done by NIN, ok. If the music is good and not done by NIN, ok. Dont say Bobby Prince is old school or NIN sucks, just wait and say (Bobby Prince/NIN/someone else) did some cool Doom3 musics or (Bobby Prince/NIN/someone else) did some crappy Doom3 musics. Just wait and say all this shit when doom3 (or DooM3 or DOOM3 or DoomIII) is released... PS: Sorry for my bad english but i'm french...

If any of you had bothered to read the article, nowhere does it say that Id has confirmed having Trent Reznor do the music for Doom3.

Bobby Prince did all of DooMs sound effects. Well... recorded them at least. Trent Reznor did the same in Quake. If its background noise... water gushing, wind blowing, gunshots etc. then it doesn't MATTER. Both Bobby prince and NIN could do a good job of it. Iau (below) DOES make sense. Lets just see what happens. Good, Bad.... I'm the guy with the gun!

Hrmmm... I think MDFMK would be able to throw together a nice soundtrack. Techno/Metal/Industrial... But then again... listen to "the sounds of Doom" cd by Bobby Prince, that sounds freaking good.

It seems people are only thinking of two view-stances here- people who like NIN, and people who dont like NIN. Well, I dont LISTEN to NIN. I dont have a particularly strong opinion on them. BUT I do on Bobby Princes score. I dont think doom3 can get off the ground without him. You may want to combine your love of doom with your love of NIN but you must understand a lot of people dont like NIN, and I'd hope most people here like doom. Dont throw two sets of opinionated eggs in the same basket and potentially alienate what could be a great game for a lot of people.

Why is everyone saying that they don't or do want Nine Inch Nails to do the soundtrack? Trent Reznor isn't Nine Inch Nails. It says plainly in the article that he likes to work outside NiN. So everyone complaining that they don't want NiN to do the soundtrack, your wish is granted.

    Link to comment

Quite true megalyth, although my complaint is not that NIN is doing the sound track, but that bobby prince ISN'T.

    Link to comment

That wasn't really aimed at you. I myself hope that Reznor does not do Doom's music, because I didn't like Quake1 music much. Bobby Prince would be nice, but he's it seems like he's faded out since Doom. Sonic Mayhem would be cool, as long as the music was like Quake2 and it's mission packs and not like Quake3.

Another thing that seems weird is that during the development of Quake3, Trent Reznor decided not to do the music because video games don't get as mch recognition, or whatever he said, I don't remember. I wonder what changed his mind...($$ahem$$)

Sonic Mayhem would be a good choice..I still would love REZNOR to do the score. You people are braindead!! Quake 1 sounds were excellent!!! NIN might be $$AHEM!!$$, but so is everyone else in the music industry!?!?Metallica in my opinion are the biggest greedy bastards in the industry. I would pretty much take NIN over those fuckin sell-outs anyday. Bobby Prince isnt the only fuckin person to save DOOM3. A good example is the music in DOOM 64, thoughs tracks had me scared through the whole game!! that is why i liked Q1 because the music added to the surreal enviroment.

NiN sucks. Industrial sucks. Bobby Prince rules. Altough (i think it was) E3M3 was written by Slayer.... Slayer doing the soundtrack might be.. uhm.. intresting. Slayer killing Trent Reznor would nicely fall in the 'good ideas' category.

Doom64's music was a good example of music that is atmospheric and still had enough to it that it was a lot more than static and breathing. Whoever did the Doom64 music did a great job, it would be nice if Id would consider them.
