This hasn't yet made the news since the problem is still unknown and rare, but new cases are increasing daily. I've been one of those accounts since two weeks.
When a game is bought from the Playstation Store, the account is granted a license to install, launch and run that game. However, recently a small number of accounts have got into a trouble which breaks their PS Plus subscription at random, denying access to online games, cloud saving and streaming. At this point, the most sensible and likely solution would be restoring licenses from the PS options. Running this process does the exact opposite what was described for the option: the account losing licenses for every application bought/added in the past and it's irreversible. In other words, the affected user can no longer play the game he/she previously bought after restoring licenses.
This has been a problem since at least November 2023, and Sony has stayed silent. Contacting the PSN server maintenance hasn't been easy. Another reason to prefer physical. Play has its limits.
EDIT: Since the wonderful moderators of that subreddit felt the need to remove the most informative post that has been the current foothold for help on this topic, I had replace the empty post with an archived screencap. The thread where it was posted and most of the discussion has taken place can be found here.
