I just want to say that snow/ice levels in games are among my favorite environments, often being a standout in a game like episode 2 in Blood. Funnily enough my very first video game was Super Empire Strikes Back, of which the first 11 levels are set on Hoth, so that may have something to do with it. So naturally I too gravitate towards these winter settings in Doom WADs. On a related note I moved to Minnesota a couple years ago with my S/O after dealing with Oregon and California "winter", so now I get to experience the real deal! 😂

Wolfenstein 3D: ECWolf if something needs it, otherwise I can live with DOS. Doom: Nugget Doom for everything that isn't GZDoom, the latter for mods and port specific maps. Quake: Ironwail for the software look, vkQuake for the OpenGL look. Quake II: unofficial 3.24 atm, otherwise Yamagi, though I want to try Q2Pro next. Blood: NBlood Doom 3: dhewm3 Diablo: Belzebub, although I use source port loosely here as it is something akin to a Diablo 1.5 with restoration of cut quests and Diablo II's item types. It's notably more difficult than the original, but the longevity of the game is more than the vanilla ever was or will be.

Well they didn't have my new love, the carolina reaper cheese curls, so I picked up flaming hot Cheetos smoky ghost pepper puffs. Strangely lacking in flavor, but the heat is alright.

Yeah mine is also E1F1, but I wouldn't mind it being switched to a slot that provides an actual ceiling color.

@jerrysheppy Yeah it's why I never actually played Unloved II because I was too annoyed at the prospect of it ending at a red key you pick up and that's it. And I mean who am I to judge a creator for what they want to do with their own thing, but still I agree and I feel like it completely missed the point of what made the mod so great, this was also during the dark times of pre-DUSK boomer shooters so it just unintentionally came off as a low effort asset rip with all the fancy FX tuned up to 11 to try and mask how bland everything actually is. Don't think the standalone game went anywhere, so that's that.

@Breezeep And a good PLAYPAL modification to go along with it as demonstrated in that shot, love that green. I'm actually reminded of Shadow Warrior (1997) and its "ancient levels" (third and forth maps of the shareware episode and the first seven maps + first secret level of the registered set.) More like that please!

When I run out of cells for my BFG. 😭 But in all fairness I think at most I just felt intensely depressed when I went through Unloved the first time when it was new, I was in a very dark place mentally and environmentally, so it was like an escape in a way, being able to fight back against the demons that I couldn't fight in real life. I was already and still am a huge Silent Hill fan (the first four games) so needless to say it felt like this release that came out of nowhere by an author that didn't do anything else with Doom felt like it was made specifically for me, my own Silent Hill so to speak. I think a lot of the Realm667 monsters tend to detract or feel out of place at times but the maps, atmosphere and music used are handled with expert care at evoking an oppressive and gloomy world, no sign of the UAC, no typical space marine fights back against the forces of hell, in Unloved it feels like it's you in your own hell and you're on the brink of losing at all times, be it literally or metaphorically (losing your sense of self.) The ending still gets to me, I don't think it was ever explained what happened so it's open to be interpretative.
