So, GZDoom has replaced its sector light options...
Lila Feuer replied to Jakub Majewski's topic in Source Ports
Would something like Advanced lighting modes / other lighting modes not suffice for specific and niche things like dark, doom, legacy, whatever? It's not like the menus aren't already bloated (they've already been simplified as it is by default seeing as you need to opt in as almost everything is hidden from a new user). So say if I force my lighting preference on others via my mod's MAPINFO and a user doesn't like it doesn't that just end up inconveniencing them? Can they override my MAPINFO's settings with GZDoom's or are they screwed unless they go prying inside the PK3 which isn't newbie friendly whatsoever? This notion that newbies will get lost / make ill-formed decisions will always be a problem for people who don't pay attention in the first place. I see Vinny of Vinesauce complain sometimes that a WAD is too dark and he just switches the lighting mode to legacy or something, and he's not exactly the most well-versed Doom player. This is very much a classic case of "inconvenience the established user who's been using the program longer versus the new person who will always exist in some capacity and proceed to blunder anyway." Bubble wrapping everything for a one size fits some and your mileage will always vary isn't a long-term solution, just a band aid that will proceed to eventually get wet and then fall off. E: This might be kinda petty but I don't care, if the idea is to make things look more authentic, at least lighting wise, then why is TEXTURE FILTERING defaulted to ON. -
What do you want id to do next after Eternal?

The /r/doom army will never forgive this. -

Alright so MAPINFO it is, for a WIP mod (that technically got released before) I can thankfully take out the sprite shadows because GZDoom comes with them now, but I gotta stamp in a lighting mode it relied upon in the MAPINFO because GZDoom took it out. HEHeheh. Well thanks. /s -
Either I'm getting old or the layout to MAP26: Poison Ivy III in Plutonia Revisited is not at all intuitive and I've played this WAD before in 2021. Bruh where does the yellow key go. I feel bad looking up a video because the solution is usually something that makes me feel stupid. Humongo maps that take an hour+ to finish: I sleep. Medium-to-large-ish maps that take close to 30 minutes due to navigation issues: REAL SHIT. E: OK somehow I missed the RED key. I sequence broke the keys? No it turns out it's just a blind turn I made early on in the level. Sometimes my gamma sabotages me. Also damn that end was a massive fuck you lmao.

How does each Doomworld user use reactions?

Thank you Lord of the Balls, may we be blue for all eternity...engine. -
There's an older one now (which I swear was only a couple years back wtf) that I believe should be mentioned: https://www.moddb.com/mods/sonic-mayhem I've yet to play any of these but I'm eager to.

Yeah I don't understand the notion that it's ugly, it has an aesthetic and shockingly good atmosphere which I feel is heightened by the ROTT music, you would think it would be kind of cheesy or out of place but no HR is just classy like that, and like @Gregor said it has a lot in common with Plutonia in that it's this twisted yet beautiful work of a duo that were holding hands and bouncing good ideas off the other the whole time.

How do you go about completing huge, complex maps?
Lila Feuer replied to DaBigNerd's topic in Doom General
I forgot that I also played 32 Inch Nails once and MAP05 in that took me 2 and a half hours to finish because it had 2000 monsters in it and was probably the most gratuitous pacing as well as tonal change in the entire WAD. I think I lack self respect. -

Dark basically removed player self lighting which wasn't good in pitch black areas unless you relied on other sources of (dynamic) light, which was fine, excellent even for more horror-y mods and a valid preference if someone didn't like the radial effect when getting close to walls, so what's the deal with removing it? -
What program should i use to make doom sprites/art
Lila Feuer replied to Shakariki Heisenberg's topic in Everything Else
@OniriA That's not even remotely fair, not everyone is Adrian Carmack. -
Yeah and I've beaten D1 and D2 with fast monsters and pistol starts without savegames and I'll just say, the game transforms and really makes you think about where to go and how to tackle your new problems. That shit ain't happening on a keyboard unless you're 40oz.

Are you all aware that Doom 64 wads and mods are possible now?
Lila Feuer replied to Gougaru's topic in Doom General
It also relies on more advanced features like scripting. -

I will say that while I don't mind large maps I may not always be in the mood for them. I've beaten Eternal Doom, twice, because it's a vibe and you know what kind of an adventure you're opting in for. But when you get a massive showstopper of a level in the middle of a WAD or so it tends to get slippery. I myself didn't mind AV's arguably magnum opus of an exploratory map, it's one of the most memorable levels in all of megawads. However, I don't always appreciate when something like MAP15 in Plutonia Revisited just comes out of nowhere and breaks the vibe of short to medium sized levels, at the halfway mark. It's a fine level and not as obnoxious as the 30 minute map after another for the pace ruining PL2, which didn't need to be 12 hours long all in all, one of those hours which was MAP29 in itself, it gets annoying. I had a similar problem when attempting to play BtSX ep2 last year on the Unity version, where it seemed like every map took 30 minutes or more to finish, and this is a full replacement of D2 like its predecessor, it didn't need to be so long. I stopped at around MAP14 I think. I'll have to give it another go down the line but yeah, wasn't expecting the massive change in map size and subsequent pacing compared to BtSX ep1, which all in all was long (and really samey) but pretty typical of most megawads and I don't recall there being a lot of super long levels in it until maybe closer to the end, it has been a while. But if you wanted the gigachad that was Anagnorisis in Eviternity, well you had to find it lol, so I can't complain. -

I have never used the map markers in all my years of playing, and the biggest map I've finished without looking up a video was Eviternity's MAP32: Anagnorisis at 2 and a half hours of playtime. I can't remember if it was all in one go. -

@OliveTree It has more in common with character action games like Devil May Cry imo, the whole character is a weapon with extensions like abilities in addition to the weapons themselves. -

I like to call these "rhythm shooters" because they have an ebb and flow you have to get in sync with to maximize efficiency. There's already rhythm games like Crypt of the Necrodancer, so. Just because I might not care for how Doom Eternal approaches some aspects of it doesn't mean there won't be an indie FPS that does it better. -
Yes, in the next room ahead of you lol. You won't even hear the sector close after a minute of play when you're engaged on your side with monsters.
