  1. I didn't realize it was criticized harshly at all. My friends and I love it. We preferred it to Quake. Complaining about hubs is a bit odd; we didn't have much RAM you know...
  2. I've been playing since 1994 and have not come close to 100% :) I finished the original three episodes, but have never been to E2M9 or E3M9 except via idclev. I've attempted DOOM 2 many times, but never gotten more than half-way through before losing interest. I've seen each map at least once via idclev, but never properly. I got part way into E4, but have only seen most maps via idclev. I played all the way through TNT, but never finished map 30. I like TNT way better than DOOM 2. I've played a few maps of Plutonia with idclev. One day I want to get all the way through... Oh, and I've probably found less than half the secrets. I think I can get 100% on E1 but that's just because I have played it so much more than anything else.
  3. I love Icarus! I don't remember maps by number so I had to play this one real quick and... yep! This is a very memorable map. Great fun. Might be time to play this whole thing again...
  4. That book and CD were amazing! I had one friend with a copy, and we were constantly fighting over who got to borrow it. I haven't dug in, but it looks like it's archived for posterity: https://archive.org/details/tricks-of-the-doom-programming-gurus https://archive.org/details/cdrom-tricks-doom-gurus
  5. I imagine that here of all places you will find many such "someone". Only one of my friends had Internet access at home at this time. He also ran a BBS just for our use. They had just the one phone line, so connectivity was spotty! We all got DOOM, Heretic, Hexen, and Quake this way. (Hey, I eventually grew up and paid!) The only wad that really sticks out in my memory is RAVEN.WAD. I still like it, but I guess people who have played newer stuff first might not care for it. https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/p-r/raven We also made our own and shared them amongst ourselves on this private little BBS. All dust now. Not that they were worth preserving for the world, but for my own sake, I sure wish I could replay some of those. I imagine there's a whole class of private little long lost wads, never played by more than a handful of teens, and never to be seen again.
  6. My bad. I used gzdoom 4.11.3. The files are 7zipped.
  7. This was awesome. I've only found 2 secrets... I'll come back to this for the other three. dsfrd_ThermalEnergyStation_V1.1.lmp.7z
  8. The screenshots have all gone 404.
  9. This is a first map?! You have a level of interconnectedness most seem to miss out on. Most don't even have any height variation. Pretty good! Some things can be improved: - more light variation; everything is too bright - switches are on the other side of the sprawl from where they act and I just had to wander around to see what changed - I didn't even figure out what the switch in the secret near the exit did - I noticed the first secret on the map when I was up by the yellow key card, but there was no way to re-lower that lift so I had to go around. It's nice to allow operation from both sides, usually just by walking over it. - That same lift leading to the yellow key card shouldn't even have had a switch; it should have lowered as you approached it. Your switch here is doubled even. - After you're up there, that switch seems a bit silly; why not have the yellow key just sitting there? - There's a powerful weapon hiding here, but nothing to use it against. Demo recorded with dsda-doom v0.27.5 FirstMap.lmp.7z
  10. Perfect symmetry rarely works well. What height variation this has doesn't amount to much. Shotgunning barons isn't much fun. As someone else pointed out, all fights can be skipped anyway. Recorded with chocolate-doom 3.0.1: WOOD.lmp.7z
  11. Weird, wild stuff! I didn't know what to make of many of these! But I had fun with almost all of them. Only a few soft-locked me, including two in the first room! Here are my 34 demos, recorded with gzdoom 4.11.3. P19.lmp.7z
  12. I died a lot. A whole lot :). I gave up and dropped down to skill 1 so I could finish it (second lmp; both recorded with dsda-doom v0.27.5). The crate room has a crate with some bad textures (see screenshots). Invaded Facility.lmp.7z
  13. Took me a few tries to survive, and then a few more to find the secrets. But I liked it a lot! Demos recorded with dsda-doom v0.27.5 -complevel -1 -skill 2 earthbase.lmp.7z
  14. I got fragged by... myself? I might not be smart enough for this one. Also gzdoom 4.11.3 reports many errors:
