    Fucking thing died as I plugged it in, getting shorted due to contact with the monitor's plug thing.

      Grounding shouldn't be an issue if the drive's powered by a double-insulated plugpack. A couple of years ago I had a wireless router and it's plugpack die in what could best be described as a "murder-suicide pact" - the plugpack failed and killed the router while doing so.
