I mean, you can often port over some or all of the logic too, depending on what it is... And if you're willing to target the newer MBF21 standard (supported by GZDoom, Eternity, and DSDA-Doom, the latter of which is Pr+'s defacto successor) instead of the original Boom dehacked extensions from 1998, those limitations are going to be a lot fewer.

Don't forget the compatibility setting for invisibility sphere behavior: ZDoom-based ports inexplicably default to the Heretic invisibility behavior even when playing Doom, which completely alters the gameplay in maps that use it.

Favorite games/series/whatever from the year
esselfortium replied to Dragonker's topic in Everything Else
Anime: Revue Starlight Movie - Everything I liked about the series, turned up to 20. Gloriously surrealist, beautiful to look at, and full of passion and catharsis. Uma Musume Season 2 - Manages to turn its preposterously silly premise into one of the better sports dramas I've seen. Odd Taxi - Great mystery story with tons of personality. The main character is a walrus. Irina: The Vampire Cosmonaut - Irina and Lev were adorable together and it was enjoyable to root for them against the hardships they faced. Yuru Camp Season 2 - I love comfy camping. Manga: The Demon Girl Next Door - The post-Madoka work no one is talking about, and the only one that took something other than "wow, cool suffering!" from its predecessor. Hoping that season 2 of the anime will find its audience. Robert Pollard albums: Boston Spaceships - Zero to 99 (2009) - The last remaining Boston Spaceships album that I hadn't heard yet, and it might be my new favorite of them. Best track: "A Good Circuitry Soldier" Guided By Voices - It's Not Them. It Couldn't Be Them. It Is Them! (2021) - Lots of really strong peaks, only let down by a couple of weak tracks. Still great. Catchiest track: "My (Limited) Engagement" Guided By Voices - Earth Man Blues (2021) - Pollard's formerly unused scraps are better than most other songwriters' hits. Best track: "How Can A Plumb Be Perfected?" Cub Scout Bowling Pins - Heaven Beats Iowa (2021) - Music written after-the-fact over completely unaccompanied vocal tracks shouldn't work this well, but it does. Weirdest track: "Moon Camera" -
I guess it depends on whether we're ignoring what the average personal computer was actually capable of running in 1993. Doom.wad is way simpler than even the vast majority of classic-style mapsets, because computers at the time could only barely handle it.

Well, whether you consider those to be issues or features is arguably up for debate. There are things I enjoy about the IWAD maps that aren't often captured in community mapping trends. I'd also say that I grew a lot more as a mapper from working on D2TWID, because it pushed me much further outside what had been my comfort zone.

Coming up with a suitable E1M1 was tricky. Romero's E1M1 is an incredibly efficient map that establishes so many things about the game in just a few scenes, and every vertex is iconic because we've seen every corner of it thousands of times by now. All of us making E1M1 attempts of our own were faced with accomplishing all those same things without directly replicating any of the same scenes. I'm still mostly pretty satisfied with Communications Bridge, though -- the one thing I'd definitely change is the "bridge" room, which is definitely a bit too structurally involved for E1. DTWID in general was more of a "wing it, go by feel" approach than the more in-depth study we later did for D2TWID. (And even D2TWID has some authenticity errors in it!) So it might be more enjoyable to take in DTWID as a classic-inspired nostalgia set rather than a truly authentic replica, because it's not really one.

TNTRevilution- Vanilla Doom- Save bug
esselfortium replied to Cybernight Zero's topic in WAD Discussion
Many vanilla wads ignore the savegame limit, because it varies depending on gameplay (an archvile resurrecting a lot of monsters can push a map over the limit) and is basically impossible to reliably test for. Alien Vendetta, Suspended in Dusk, Back to Saturn X, and other wads all ignore it in some or all maps. I would recommend using a patched EXE that fixes the savegame limit, such as DOOM32. -
Completely closed self-referencing sector?
esselfortium replied to Contmotore's question in Editing Questions
I'm not sure how it was done in TNT, but what I do is create a narrow triangular sector bordering the "closed" one on each side, pushing both sectors' ceilings way up out of view and then setting the inner sector's floor to 1 unit below that unseen ceiling. With this setup, the sectors shouldn't be self-referencing, but just normal sectors. Note that you'll see flat bleeding in the window if the player can stand higher than the floor sector you raised, so be sure to push it up high enough to avoid that. -
I like encounters that encourage me to move around a lot, but I'm not fond of forcing it with constant lock-ins. I like having some breathing room in between major encounters, instead of being instantly punished around every single corner. Revenants are probably the most fun monster to fight. Skillsaw's brand of gameplay is great because I am not remotely a top-tier player, and he's good at setting up fun challenges that make you feel like you're actually good at this game.

I vaguely remember ages ago trying some dehacked tricks like this involving monster attacks without actually waking up the monster and giving it a real target via the standard A_Look/A_Chase, and running into crashes with it while testing in Choco. Has anyone else run into this, or other issues with it (memory corruption I guess?), or is it safer than I remember?
-
Not sure where to find it now, but I remember years ago there was a detail texture set for Doomsday. It's not the same as the hi-resolution packs, they're smaller textures that get blended over surfaces when you get close to them.

Holy cow, that is impressive. Isn't the GBA not too far removed from the SNES's capabilities?

There's no need to copy any files to a different folder, or even to use the command line, really. Hold ctrl while selecting them so that you can highlight both files at once, and drag them onto your ZDoom exe together.

did doomworld modernize or something?
esselfortium replied to abunchoftrash's topic in Everything Else
Doomworld changed its forum software quite a while ago, back in 2017 I think, because the old hacked-up VBulletin version that it used to run on was unmaintainable and full of security holes. -
