Thank you guys so much for the Break//Point// mention (and sneaking in a Heelbain one!). And even for letting me sneak in on the Doot Eternal section (and land a last-minute addition). Congratulations to all the winners and mentions this year. This community went all out for the thirtieth birthday of Doom and did not disappoint.

I really enjoy nonsensical map names (see my title), or ones that are kinda crass (Go Fuck Yourself from Sunlust or take your pick of any of the Team Rocket 2 map names). Even if the map itself is a fairly serious work, silly map names lend even more to the idea (imo) that the author still really enjoys what they do as a creative and fun endeavor.

It's led to several people in this community getting jobs and making their own games so I'd say it's a pretty translatable skill. I do it because it's fun, personally, but the skills you learn can be useful. There's obviously the level design aspect - which on its own can inform choices of what you like doing best - is it coding? environmental design? blocking-out? you can carve out your niche. Some people even go on to lead their own projects which teaches leadership and teamwork. But overall? One thing I want people to understand about creative endeavors is that we don't do them just because they are useful. Not every hour of our day has to be spent "contributing", to society or even to a community. Sometimes it's okay just to make something because you want to, because you have an idea that you want to put out into the world (or even just onto the UDB grid and left to rot on your hard drive, that's totally a fine option too).

Gabriel Iglesias, George Carlin, Russell Howard, Sarah Millican, Jimmy Carr (for his hosting work, his standup is kinda ass), Ron White, Jessica Kirson (her crowdwork is DIVINE), Alex Horne, Greg Davies (Taskmaster is awesome).

This. I can't help but think of the Shad Brooks Twitter debacle where he's constantly showing some decent drawing skills without much effort, but then spends the rest of the time asking an AI to finish the drawing instead of taking the time to learn those skills. he'd be a frightfully awesome artist if he put the effort into developing skills he pretty obviously has. Same with any of the creative endeavors (including level design).

I mean, no. frogs are often hermaphroditic (like clownfish), there just happened to be a place where some sort of pollution had caused them to change spontaneously, I think some kind of weedkiller. but there's already genetic predisposition to do this. there's several papers on this but unfortunately a lot of those are paywalled. Also worth noting Alex goes by the "spray and pray" method of prediction; essentially talk a lot of bollocks about a lot of different subjects and if he happens to be right he can say he predicted it. Also also worth noting that when he goes back to say he was right about his predictions, he clips a lot of the context out :') If you want to know just how much of a bullshitter Alex actually is, listen to the Knowledge Fight podcast. It's over... 800 episodes long now. But it covers a myriad of both old and new Alex Jones shows, all the Sandy Hook trials/depositions, etc. Dan does an amazing job of research and recall. And the intro music fucking slaps.

they yassified the frogs. oh my god. I will say this is about the dumbest way to try to pay back court costs but sure, I guess

Next doom game won't have mick. Is doom, doomed!?

Did we have this crisis of conscience when Bobby Prince didn't score nuDoom? No? then you have your answer -
THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO CLASSIC DOOM [REVISION V]
Major Arlene replied to Vyntreaux's topic in Doom General
It shows, because the very first fact you listed off as Fun Facts isn't correct: This isn't even true, as Hovertank 3D came before Catacomb 3D. Can be found on the "List of id Software games" Wikipedia article (which does list all of its sources as well) This is why I'm curious what your sources are. I'm not trying to "well achshully" you, but there's a lot in here that either is speculative or incorrect information. -
Having watched his dev streams, this tracks :D

THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO CLASSIC DOOM [REVISION V]

I'd really love to see the sources used for this. -
I'm not even going to humor the rest of the post (and quite frankly I don't want to derail the conversation any further, this thread is about Sigil 2) because there is no such thing as objectivity when talking about creative endeavors. Verdant Citadel, Lost Civilization (which also got a sequel this year), Remnant, The Wayfarer, Paradise (which birthed Supercharge, one of the best gameplay mods available in my opinion) were all fantastic. Even NeonDM for multiplayer was good and I still play it to this day. Also worth noting - Sigil did get mention. It was a runner - up. And runner-up is still pretty damn good considering the volume of shit that has to be sifted through each year. A mention at all is big these days. Runner-up does not mean "lost at the Cacowards" - it is still recognition in its own right and a Cacoward in the technical sense. You're acting like it didn't get mentioned at all which is patently false.

Subjective take. Just like the Cacowards! Sigil is not my favorite WAD by a long shot. I absolutely adore Romero and his community but it's a disservice to the rest of the community to just award a project based on who someone is. and his 2016 WAD, Tech Gone Bad, was the very first thing mentioned in that year's cacowards. so no, they don't hate him, there's just a boatload of other projects that were just as good or better to award on the merits of those projects. Which, again, are subjective. No one has ever said that the Cacowards are the be-all, end-all of what's good in Doom, it is just a selection by a panel of people. That is it. And let's be real, Romero is adored by basically the entirety of the Doom community. Do you really think his legacy is going to hinge on what a group of ten people say?

the WAD itself with just the MIDIs will be free - it's just the extra merch, music, artwork, etc. which is pretty understandable tbh

I did - not sure if you managed to get a hold of anyone on their discord or the like but you can email info@romerogames.com to make sure that you're sorted

If you had been involved in the development of Doom and Doom II
Major Arlene replied to Psychagogue's topic in Doom General
no such thing. -
Anecdotes =/= what "everyone" would have cared about at the time or even now. I certainly don't give a damn about 100%-ing games, I'm pretty sure I've never done so in my life. So what now? first, Doom had SEVERAL patches. https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Game_patch and somehow, people still really liked it? wow, what a concept, sometimes people can look beyond bugs and enjoy a game! and one secret being bugged, which is how this conversation started, by the way, does not make a completely broken game. most normal people would have shrugged it off and still been satisfied with their time playing the game. I take it you've never developed a game before so this is the reason why you're able to spit out this nonsense with such ease. Lazy has nothing to do with it. If they were lazy they wouldn't bother fixing the bugs. In fact I'd wager it makes devs work harder because the way that Steam and other forums will absolutely glom onto devs in this EXACT manner until they fix something is now wide-spread to every dev who puts a game out. Sometimes people just miss shit. we're human. we make flawed work. that can be for any reason. shoot, I found a subtitle typo in Cyberpunk 2077 but it doesn't make the game literally unplayable. I'll just bring it to the devs, and then they can fix it. It's that easy now. It may not have been so easy to fix a misspelled subtitle back in the 90's. Maybe work on giving people a little bit of grace when they fuck up. I can guarantee when or if you make a game it won't be perfect either.

Why does Skyrim keep getting remastered?
Major Arlene replied to QuaketallicA's topic in Everything Else
You could ask the same of any of the Quake remasters or even the Rise of the Triad remaster. The answer is because people like playing remasters and companies like making them. They aren't all cash grabs either. sometimes a remaster is just for the sake of the player base and offered for free. either way, if you don't like it, no one's forcing you to buy it. -
if there's one thing that's more annoying than people joining Discord servers and immediately talking about their own bans elsewhere, it's people who feel the need to ask about other people's bans. one thing to understand about Doom folks - they can hold a grudge. and there's about 20 or so good years of history on that front. but I digress. Obviously your intentions weren't bad but probably worth noting that it's best to let sleeping dogs lie.

[GZDoom] Snap the Sentinel (v2.4) ~ EPISODE 1
Major Arlene replied to TehRealSalt's topic in WAD Releases & Development
It's awesome to see this game is still around. I covered it for E1M1 and briefly for the Cacowards a couple years ago and really enjoyed it. Best of luck with this game, it's looking great!
