If Doom 2 happened in real life, would we win?
Egg Boy replied to neubejiita's topic in Doom General
Heh... don't worry rookie, I'll take them all on and win heh don't even worry about it. Just sit at home "gaming" I'll get down to business cracking heads. Yeah, I'm one of the few people (perhaps the ONLY person) on this god-foresaken rock with the skillset to grill a couple of demonic dweebs. I look the devil directly in the eyes and I say "bring it on" because I know they're scared they don't want to mess with me. Just give me a walkman and a Metalallica tape and I'll have them crying for their mommas. And after I win I'll run this shit because I've got what it takes unlike those clowns in congress. -
I’ve seen a strange amount of people theorize this was once a Quake game in development, but that makes very little sense considering everything we know about it. Hugo Martin mentions in an interview, when directly asked if it’s inspired by Quake or Heretic that the gameplay in this takes major cues specifically from the original Doom. Making a Quake game where the player is “grounded” is not very Quake, considering Quake is very vertical and is all about jumping around and whatnot. There’s also all the Nu Doom-y architecture you see all over the place, you could argue it was Quake very early in development, but again, from what we know this was always Doom. A complete visual rework of the game doesn’t seem plausible considering it’s been in development for 4 years and looks pretty finished. The new games have been teasing out a sword and shield since 2016, we got the sword in Eternal, we get the shield here. I’m just saying the theory this was Quake at any point doesn’t quite add up to me.

Spectrum Descent | RC2 | 16 colorful gothic maps in MBF21
Egg Boy replied to Ludi's topic in WAD Releases & Development
Got through a sizeable chunk of the wad, only the last 2 maps to go but they seem massive so I think I'm gonna call it there tonight. Favorite maps so far: 01, 02, 04, 10, and 11. -
There's still sci fi in this, if you look in the background of the mech fight scene there's a UAC base.

This looks very promising. I'm glad its not Eternal because as much as I loved it, I don't think they could possibly push that style any further without the game becoming way too niche for anyone but hardcore fans of that particular game (you could argue the first DLC does get too niche). Digging the seeming lack of a jump, the "inspired by the original Doom (1993)" quote makes me think this will be much more like a bullet hell, yet another reinterpretation of what a modern Doom game can be. I don't think anyone saying "it looks like Eternal" is paying close attention because everything from the game speed to the mechanics to the level design (wide open spaces, lots of room for slow moving projectiles) looks completely different. I really hope we get a full level showcase at Quakecon like we did for Eternal because I want to see what exactly is happening between combat set pieces since platforming would be pretty tough without jumping.

Facts. All Doom is great.

Not super obscure, but some stuff you may have overlooked that I quite like. Amnesia: the Bunker Bomb Rush Cyberfunk N++ Call of Juarez: Gunslinger Custom Robo (childhood classic, probably not actually that good)

Daylight District | A 7-level vanilla episode! - RC3! [split]
Egg Boy replied to Clippy's topic in WAD Releases & Development
It would be a shame if this thread simply devolved into a discussion on the merit of this wad, so I will say this, Squonker wads have generally trended towards being more difficult on UV and this has not changed. The designers on this wad are the same ones that have worked tirelessly to contribute great maps to multiple projects, and still have a sharp sense of design that hasn’t gone away just because they aimed to make something more challenging. No one set out to make something that would upset you, and difficulty settings were provided for players who do not quite meet the skill floor of the higher difficulties. I find some of the wording in your post to be a bit disrespectful, especially considering the quality of the wad and this project’s development has been so smooth compared to the one I’m supposed to have mapped for for a year now. At the end of the day, Squonker is a friend group that also makes maps that are released to the public free of charge, I don’t think criticism is bad, but I find a few of the posts in this thread to be thoughtlessly callous, and the sort of thing that could potentially really hurt someone who put a lot of work into their map. This wad offers what squonker has always offered, end of story.- 13 replies

To this point, I've considered something similar a few times. I am being completely unironic when I say the youtube algorithm can genuinely change your life. When I was in early high school cringe compilations, "commentary" channels, and figures like Ben Shapiro were being pushed pretty hard into my youtube recommendations. I watched and even thought stuff like this was funny at the time. I believe had a certain channel not appeared to me one day and made me start questioning this content I would have probably continued to consume it, and would probably carry pretty different beliefs today. I know it sounds a bit ridiculous, but if you're a young person who considers themselves a social outcast its pretty easy to fall into and align yourself with certain corners of the internet, probably without even consciously realizing it.

Doom 2 In City Only [Now on idgames]
Egg Boy replied to myolden's topic in WAD Releases & Development
I still think "A Tale of Doom Cities" would have been a better title. Congrats on the release, was fun to see you work on this a little bit. -
Seems like the link is broken, I was looking forward to playing this.
