I was shown the classic titles by my father when I was 6 years old, and they scared the hell out of tiny me. Despite my fears of playing it, the series caught my intrigue and I consumed a lot of online content at the time related to it throughout the rest of my time in elementary school (this was the late 2000s to early 2010s, so think flash parodies and Aquarius199 videos). During middle school, my interests shifted to other games until I'd rediscovered the series in 8th grade and started figuring out how to play the classic games with mods. That's when my obsession REALLY blossomed into the grotesque thing it is now, namely with the fond memories of discovering various WADs like Impossible: A New Reality and Bahaus, as well as the time my brother and I would spend playing co-op in Zandronum. Now at age 21, I still play it a lot and still enjoy trying out maps, it's more or less become my comfort food game.

How much do aesthetics matter to you in Doom? [Poll]
crusty_charlie replied to Kwisior's topic in Doom General
I think they matter in the sense that visual cues and memorable details can go a long way toward helping you know where you're going in a level. That being said, I don't exactly demand that the average WAD I play looks like primo luxury. -
As a kid I called him the Doom Marine

That sounds like fun ngl

Definitely a lot of worthwhile projects up there but don't force yourself into playing something you straight up don't enjoy just because they got a Cacoward. Think of them like a "greatest hits" of that particular year of Doom mods.

- Bauhaus (4 levels with a high art-esque feel and atmosphere to them) - Chainworm Kommando (10 thematically varied maps with a good sense of continuity and loads of doomcute if that's your jam) - Grime (5 bite sized urban themed maps. Also try Urbanside, as it has a similar spirit but with more recognizably realistic locations) - Doom II - Dark World (Beefier, hell-themed reimaginings of Doom II's first 11 maps) - Violence (4 punchy levels with a purple wasteland theme and synthwave ost) - @TheMagicMushroomMan mentioned Void, which is a map I absolutely love. Probably the best execution of the concept of a "psychedelic Doom map" I can think of. - RAMP series (Several maps made by contributors with varying levels of experience, all connected by a hub system. The teleporters to the maps have little displays next to them that let you know what level difficulty and length the map will be. 1 is shortest/easiest, 5 is longest/hardest. Also try DUMP, the spiritual predecessor to this concept) I think for what you're looking for, these examples should be a good start. Don't let the short length of a lot of these projects fool you, from my experience the maps themselves are a good challenge that doesn't rely on absurd crowds to kill you. I completely get where you're coming from about wanting WADs that feel challenging and interesting without just being straight up "hold a strafe key + mouse 1" level annoyance, hope ya like these.

Any suggestions for a good urban-themed mappack?
crusty_charlie replied to HQDefault's topic in WAD Discussion
Grime and Urban Side are pretty good, bitesized urban themed WADs, maybe you might like those? Grime (https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/g-i/grime) Urban Side (https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/Ports/s-u/urbanside) -

I remember this one WAD that was styled after PSX Doom visuals-wise, and it had the Doom logo from the 2005 film as its M_DOOM graphic. Unfortunately that's all I remember. -

Pieces Of Media You Can't Believe Were Made By The Same Person?

Both of these were directed by Peter Jackson but neither of them feel even REMOTELY like they were directed by the same person.- 100 replies
