  1. If we're talking about the original 90s games, well considering that many of them were blatantly borrowing from songs that the team enjoyed, it's mainly a lot of metal and thrash, with Doom II going for more of a darker tone in its music; doom and grunge, as others have said. If it's the new games though, very much industrial and djent, with heavy elements of electronic as well in there. It's kinda hard to really pin it down though to one specific genre since it varies.
  2. I have to admit, the whole medieval theme is starting to grow on me lol. Combined with how they're taking the gameplay direction this time around, I'm honestly pretty excited for this now.
  3. So far those mixed reactions seem to only really be coming from places like here, which are more invested in the older games. You look everywhere else and the game is being hyped to hell and back (pun intended) because, on the whole, people really loved Eternal. And hey, even if I didn't love Eternal like most people, I see its appeal and in moments I do find the game fun, so I totally get why people are super excited for any new Doom release.
  4. Much as I'm not a fan of them going further in the lore that Eternal set up and delving into the whole medieval angle, I can get over it at the end of the day. In the same way I just ignore the story and lore of Eternal in the rare times I revisit that game. If it's a more grounded game, with the pace and gameplay not as incredibly fast as Eternal's was, I'll probably have much more fun with it. Interesting to see no showcasing of glory kills; not sure if that's intentional, maybe they've gotten rid of/replaced that system, or just didn't show them for this trailer for whatever reason. Weapons also look neat, that skull-shredding shotgun is especially gnarly.
  5. I'm sure it will be fun, but man I just really cannot stand the lore shit that was built around the new games, especailly with Eternal. The lore and story is probably the thing I disliked most from that game, and I just hate that they're further digging down on it. Regardless, I hope the game is fun. It certainly looks to be a different pace compared to Eternal, much heavier and not as ultra-fast, which I would prefer if that's the case, given I found Eternal just so overwhelming at times to play.
  6. Glad you enjoyed it! :) I'm a big fan of John, so it was cool to see him cover one of my favorite series. Most of the time that's for balancing purposes, especially multiplayer. High close range damage but low range helps to balance them and make shotguns more fair in multiplayer games if you're not going for realism.
  7. Some can definitely be like that, but not all kart racers are super RNG-dependent. Sonic & All-Stars Racers Transformed for example is far more skill-based and have fewer items that can screw you over. Actually you would probably enjoy Blur a lot. It's got features of kart racers like powerups but has more realistic handling and uses real vehicles.
  8. Racers are actually a good one for me too. Arcade racers as well, especially kart racers though.
  9. His reviews are still good, honestly a lot better than his old videos. Better production quality, better researched, etc. This video is just an odd-man out among his regular reviews given the subject matter is not his usual thing so he was going in less familiar than usual.
  10. Well as I said it's not his usual wheelhouse, it was a pick from his fans on his Patreon. He'll sometimes do reviews for games that he wouldn't otherwise play or review, like game donations. Given John's only experience with Doom up to this point was with the new games, it's not too surprising that he would have more trouble with the older games. His brother, Elliot, who shows up in the video a couple times is much more familiar with shooters than John is.
  11. City builders/tycoon games are usually my go-to, like Cities Skylines and Roller Coaster Tycoon/Planet Coaster. Some of my favorite puzzle games like Mini Metro/Mini Motorways and Dorfromantik are good for this. I also put games like Bloons TD6 in this camp as well. I also have some pure sandbox games as these since they keep my brain occupied easily, like Worldbox and Townscaper.
  12. Well besides Doom, I tend to relax most playing simple puzzle or strategy games. I like to call these "Podcast games" given I can enjoy them while listening to something like a podcast or watching a youtube video since they don't require a ton of attention.
  13. Not that surprising given that he doesn't hang in the same retro shooter circles as we do or someone like Trav Guy or Civvie does. But he's still a large enough youtuber that I figure it was worth posting just to get others thoughts given Johnny isn't as familiar with Doom as we would be.
  14. That's why I placed it among the others as "classic" given its age at this point and its distance in time from the modern games, but I get that I doesn't exactly fit the same criteria for that title that Doom/Doom II do, so I've edited the title to add "older" as well.
