I've been trying to tell people this the whole time (especially Reddit), Annihilation wasn't some malicious attempt to defile the franchise, it was a passion project that kinda went sideways. It probably wouldn't have had much backlash if not for certain Tweets and the fucking annoying casual community 2016 spawned. Looking back at this thread after so long, I sorely wish the actual game was anything like the leaks mentioned here. Everyone expected the game to be a lot more story-driven based on the trailers, but the plot we actually got was no more "background" than 2016's.

The only microtransactions for Eternal are for past skins and profile items that have previously been offered for free several times before and are now offered for a relatively small fee for those who missed out, they're not locking anything crucial behind paywalls or anything like "new" skins

Doom 1 was planned to have a hidden Ms. Pac-Man secret level as a "sequel" of sorts to Wolf3D's Pac-Man secret level, but this was axed the moment John Carmack used his powers to see into the future and discovered the eventual royalty issues that would concern Ms. Pac-Man in the late 2010's-early 2020's

Following on from this, I think the only way it can be salvaged is if they pull a "legacy character" thing post-TAG2 and have someone who's "just a guy" again earn the title of "Doom Slayer"
