  1. Fun fact - it has actually been a feature in Odamex for many years, but it suffered from implementation issues. It's been improved now using a proper method for retrieving the files.
  2. The MancuNET primary server has been replaced with a shiny new server with more redundancy and a gigabit pipeline. At the time of this writing there are a couple of sites, including WADS In Progress that are still reporting the older IP address, but that should complete propagating within 12 hours. All accounts should be the same as before. If you have any trouble logging in to your account or accessing a service, please send an email to fuzztooth@gmail.com to ensure it's received off-network (mail is not yet completely set up).
  3. Bethesda Softworks UK has provided us the tiniest of teasers of their upcoming Doom (4? 2 Again?) gameplay reveal at this year's E3. As with any new game videos, I strongly recommend checking this out in Youtube's 60p mode. Even this 8 seconds is worth it. For more information, check out The Verve's brief comparisons and slow mo gifs.
  4. MancuNET's primary server located at 76.74.252.88 will be going down for a complete server rebuild (UPDATED)Tuesday, May 19th @ 5pm CDT. This will likely take at least four hours, if not longer. While backups are always advised, data should not be affected during this time. The hope is all user accounts will be preserved as well, so people should feel little difference once this is complete. This will primarily affect access to The Doom Wiki, Odamex, MancuNET /idgames mirror, and a few other locations. Sites such as DRD Team and The World Doom League will be unaffected. Check back here and in the comments for further updates.
  5. Kotaku's recent report of Ziff Davis's purchase of IGN has recently caused a bit of a stir amongst Doomworld members considering the ugly UGO logo that used to grace the upper-right corner of every page on this site. Be assured that Doomworld's parent entity, AtomicGamer, has not been in a relationship with UGO for the past two years. Therefore, this news will have zero impact on the future of this site. Thanks for your concern.
  6. 19... many of us don't remember it, some of us aren't even there yet, but regardless Doom finds itself at that age today. It was 19 years ago that a spunky young software company released what would be their second hit and a cornerstone of FPS gaming. BUT MANC WARES CACOWARDS?? You may have noticed that our recurring feature The Cacowards has not been posted. It turns out our good friend hobbs aka rnemo aka john smitharnooneydooneydo was tasked with managing this sacred tradition. He has unfortunately been scarce on this day of days. There is tale that he appeared on IRC to say he still would have it taken care of, but that was not recent enough to comfort one's worries. But fear not my FPS fans! There is a plan underway to restore the glory of the Golden Caco. We are not sure when it will arrive, but it will be posted with haste as soon as the materials arrive. Stay tuned!

    Old is New Again

Gamasutra, a gaming news and game development job posting site has decided to start providing archived issues of its Game Development Magazine online, and which did they start with? Doom of course! From the article: Starting a new column reprinting classic Game Developer magazine articles, this January 1994 premiere issue article goes behind the scenes of Id Software's Doom, talking to John Carmack and revealing technical specifics of the seminal game's creation. While there may not be any new information in general it's still a fun read, and who doesn't like reading a bit more of how Doom came about?

    Doomnterviews

Weak, I know, but moving right along... Forumgoer sigvatr has undertaken the task of interviewing some random chaps around this here Doom community (including Codeimp, Kaiser, Tormentor667 and more) and has them available on his website in their pure, unedited form. Along with general questions on specific attitudes and feelings of the community today, those that are working on upcoming projects share a bit of what we might see. If it's raining where you are, or you've finally finished reading the backlog of Penny Arcade and having nothing else to read on the internet, you may find these to be a good timekiller - and you may just learn a thing or two as well.

    Doom Turns 13!

...and we're still here. Amazing isn't it? 13 years of imp scratching, pistol starting excitement and there's no sign of it letting up any time soon. As part of our new tradition here at Doomworld, we present to you the 13th Annual Cacowards! Scuba Steve came through again with another installment of the annual awards event that showcases the best of the best from each year. This time around there's no shortage of top notch quality, and if you didn't have anything better to do today we highly recommend playing through each of these fantastic WADs and leave your feedback on what YOU think may or may not have deserved such accolades. We also recommend checking out the Doom Wiki, a collaborative, comprehensive resource for all things Doom that continues to grow due to contributions from you. Dylan 'Toke' McIntosh, R.I.P.

Dylan McIntosh, whom most knew simply as "Toke" died in a car crash Saturday afternoon. While he may not have been everyone's favorite doomer, his continuous contributions to the multiplayer community cannot be overlooked and have been directly responsible for its continued popularity even after 13 years. From Doomworld, from me, thank you Toke for your enthusiasm, knowledge and guidance.

    WIP It Up

Though it may be breaking the "code" of not posting about something you're involved in, no one else has yet posted about it so I will: WIP has returned! That's right, boris's Wads In Progress website is back online. WIP is a great place to post your Doom/Heretic/Hexen/Doom 3 projects, with screenshots and discussion features so you can get feedback quickly and a whole lot more. So go on, check out what's new in Doom engine modifications!
  12. So it turns out that I got the proverbial shaft. Some of you may recall my previous blog post about asking for donations so I have the cash to pay for the recovery of my data files for a film I'm working on. Apparently a specific portion critical to recovery is so jacked up that any attempts to recover other parts result in nothing but "noise". However, there are two positives to come out of this: 1, the drive is still RMA-able, and while I probably will not do that anyway, it's nice to know it can be done, and 2, thanks to your generous donations I am able to feed the noxel/mancunet bill as well as get a new hard drive to start most of my work over again.

    :(

Heh, recently my system drive became noisy and eventually died. The only thing worthy on it was my hw.

However I did lose a 10gb drive, and had to format my 60gb in order to install xp on it.

      oh and.... *hugz*

    Now .1 More Free

Through the dredges of doom news and fake ebay auction invoices, this little bit fell through the cracks. Jon Dowland did his best to report that Freedoom was updated to 0.4.1. What's new? Apparently there was a small texture goof that went unnoticed but has been quickly rectified. Go play Doom the free way.
