  1. Alright, Here's a second pass at my stuff based on @Jimmy's notes. I wound up making extensive revisions to "To Heal a Poisoned Land," while revisiting that vibraphone part. Hopefully all changes are for the better. ~File~
These levels are short, sweet, and pack a lot of punch. Complete with a humorous end-text-screen containing a healthy dose of silly shock-humor, this is a masterful triumph of Heretic map-making, and most certainly a must-play wad.
With its borrowed textures, monsters and music, Heretic never felt more like Hexen. There are times when the visuals are breath-taking, and a few times when they're a little rough around the edges. The foremost folly of the set is its progression, which can at times be scatter-brained. You'll spend 10-20 minutes looking for a switch, and then another 10-20 minutes looking for what the switch did. If you'd like hint, it's almost never what would make logistical sense. What the Megawad lacks in polish, however, it makes up for in passion. The levels are grand in size and scope, and the occasional flourishes of environmental story-telling are immersive and creative. My favorite map of the set was E3M3's impressive boat set-piece. Although it may have quite a few clunky bits, this is an epic and addictive ride from start to finish. If you're prepared to pace yourself through the longer treks of the set (such as the extended length of Episode 3), and the parts seemingly engineered to test your patience, this one is worth a go
  2. I thought I'd give the Heretic map from the OP a go! (2012) by Peter Guts - Heretic, 1 Map Port: GZDoom Difficulty: Smite-Meister Playtime: 24:49 The few reviews this wad has are very cruel, but I found it delightful. If you're patient, and know your way around a maze, this wad is a fun time and accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do, providing some clever little puzzle set-pieces with some imaginative, if sometimes rudimentary, visual flares. Rating: 3/5, Simple, creative and competent
  3. Heretic. I'm on the home stretch of Masters of Chaos right now. It's a very grand and epic mapset. E3M3's boat set piece is very impressive.
A competent, if unremarkable Heretic map, with an intriguing infusion of Doom textures.
  4. The Disparil's Labs (2007) by Walter "Daimon" Confalonieri - Heretic, 1 Map Port: GZDoom Difficulty: Smite-Meister Playtime: 6:04 It's a nice little jaunt through a Doom tech-base buried in a Heretic temple. The level is functional and competent, short and sweet. Some might say it's unremarkable, but I enjoyed the brief six minute jaunt. It's an interesting concept to bring Doom textures over into Heretic, even if it does do weird things to my head to see the blended styles. Rating: 3/5, Perfectly Harmless
  5. I just finished the wad a couple of days ago on a very casual HMP, and I gotta say--I loved it. I loved the intimate size of the maps, the conservative enemy numbers, and the satisfying secrets. Just as Romero promised in his tweet, it felt so beautifully cut from the same cloth as the original 4 episodes (and Sigil I, of course). I'm very excited to see what Hellion turns out to be.

Spectacular visuals and engaging combat make this an absolute must play. There's a puzzle with a "Shoot the thing" answer that kind of comes out of left field and can be an easy place to get stuck if you're not on your toes, but that hardly stops the map from being a thrilling masterpiece.
E3M9's refrain of back-tracking to a church for keys is a little tedious, and there are a few moments where things can become a frustrating key/switch hunt as you figure out what to do next, but aside from that, this an intense and rewarding adventure with beautiful lighting and architecture.
  7. Oh nice! I played Dark Forces on the PS1, and never thought to look for a community for it this whole time. Thank you for the recommendation!
  8. Great! I've changed the OP to include what you've mentioned and made things a little more specific. And thank you for the thread recommendation. That's quite a treasure trove!
