Just a question that popped up in my mind. Chaingunners and arch-viles would be absolute hell semi-invisible, people talk about "death from above" and "death from below", well, what about "death from fuck knows where"? Cybies are an interesting case, maybe there's some use they could make of it but unfortunately IMO their sprite is just too big to make them noticeably harder to detect. And there's another problem for them and all other projectile-throwing enemies: you could look at the places said projectiles would spawn from in order to immediately find them. Still, it's totally possible they could get at least a surprise shot on you and deal considerable damage anyways. Pain elementals and lost souls... Just a fucking absolute shitshow. Of course, it kinda depends on the map brightness too. Spectres aren't too hard to spot in brightly-lit environments, but a darker environment surely would help propagate all the pain I mentioned in the previous paragraph. But anyways... What do you personally think?

Did Doom II feel like a slog when it was released?
DSC replied to princetontiger's topic in Doom General
You can prefer Doom 1 over 2, but I still can't get behind this logic. The levels in Doom 2 are way bigger, more experimental, daring and willing to take risks. They're the exact opposite of "lazy", the scope and ambition far surpasses Doom 1.- 43 replies

Fun fact: the titular Epping Forest was the location where the Black Knight scene in Monty Python and the Holy Grail was filmed!

The soundtrack of nu-Doom has pretty much become the go to choice whenever someone mentions metal in most of the Internet spheres. It's influence has far reached beyond even the scope of just the games. Just look at the amount of memes and parodies that came from it, for example. And whenever a game has a metal soundtrack, there comes a swarm immediately saying "this sounds like Doom!", even if it's an entirely different subgenre. Honestly, it has become quite tiresome for me. I heard someone say once that the nu-Doom OST is kind of becoming "white girl metal", and I couldn't agree more. Besides that, (and I don't want to knock on the quality of the soundtrack itself) IMO it is not even the best representation of what the original vision for Doom was, even if the industrial/djent mix has become the point of reference of the series and even metal itself for a large amount of people. To me, Doom is more akin to something like thrash: unrelenting speed and aggression, with an healthy dose of a punkish and anti-establishment attitude. A constant assault of the senses, like being in the middle of a big, furious mosh pit while the music plays at an ear-drum rupturing volume, making a tornado or storm look like a soft breeze, as opposed to the slower more down-tuned tracks of nu-Doom. If I were to choose myself the soundtrack for a new Doom game that's what I would go with (and if I ever become a decent mapper, I might just do that in some of my own maps!). But of course, that's just one interpretation of what Doom could be. That's the amazing thing about extensively moddable games like Doom: they can be whatever the hell you want! For many of the more atmospheric maps this kind of soundtrack wouldn't fit in at all, as an example. In this post in particular I'm not focusing at all about the tone of the entirety of Doom as a whole including every single community map, I'm talking about what the original 1993 Doom wanted to be, and that it's trying to be replicated by the new games. I already made my case on how I see the original Doom, and it left me wondering, what do others think? So, I've decided to make this poll in order to hear what my fellow Doom enjoyers have to say. What kind of metal you see that fits Doom the best?

Not too long ago there was this thread where someone was criticizing some modern self-described "90's inspired" maps for not feeling very much like actual levels from the early days of Doom. And you know what? I can definitely see why they would say that. I too enjoy some gameplay quirks and oddities that are all too absent in modern "retro" maps, and it kinda bothers me some mappers don't seem to fully grasp these qualities (something I hope to fix myself by improving my mapping abilities and one day build a decent wad of mine). And it's in this context that I would like to mention @valkiriforce's Doom Core Trilogy. Comprised of Doom Core Delta, Reverie and Eternally Yours (haven't actually played through this one yet, but I'm pretty sure it's as good as the others), it offers a lot of content made in (relatively) recent times that still contains a lot of that sweet magic of the beginnings of the modding scene. It features an huge variety of very different maps to play, of all shapes and sizes, bringing fresh new ideas all the way through all the while still feeling very cohesive and coherent by virtue of all of it being made by the same man. Even though it's old-school inspired, and the levels aren't too over-detailed, they still look nice enough and play very well too, something that gives it a big edge over the jank of some of the material it is inspired by. Doom Core Delta is my favorite one so far, but I've just finished Reverie and I can see why it won a Cacoaward all the way back, specially the ending. Very unusually for Doom, instead of an epic atmosphere you had this very soothing, peaceful and hopeful ambience. If you only want to try a single map from those sets, this one is definitely a big contender (Reverie MAP 30). So yeah, just wanted to bring some extra attention to, IMO, this pretty rock-solid trilogy and potentially make some people aware of it's existence. Hope it was a decent read!

Funnily enough I haven't listened to it myself yet, and I don't really plan on doing so. Most of the time unnecessarily trying to change things in an older piece of media that is fine already as it is just ends up creating an huge mess.

Yeah, I swear, the way you can just write the dumbest, most unimaginably fucking stupid shit on the YT comments section and somehow get hundreds of likes bugs me to no end. Well, I know at least they're just worthless internet points, but still, idiocy being rewarded and celebrated just leaves me annoyed as hell.

All too many times we find submissions of self-described "jokewads" that are about as funny as watching LiveLeak or an Adam Sandler movie. Jokewad has pretty much became synonymous with "shittiest lowest-effort, bottom-of-the-barrel junk", but I do wonder... What are the fabled, almost mythical good jokewads out there that actually can get a chuckle out of someone? They must be exceedingly rare, I only know a few, so I ask my fellow Doomworld members: what are some of those good jokewads out there? Personally, one I enjoyed very much was Plutonia 7. I also know about Mock 2 and it's status as a classic, but I don't know how well it might have aged. Some slightly more serious ones like that "Sunder for people who don't have time to play Sunder", or "Doom 2 In Spain Only" are actually pretty kickass, but they might not fit completely in the jokewad mould.

Honestly, at this point I believe nathanB404 is just trolling us on purpose and we all keep falling for it.

Dude no fucking way, someone mentioning Praying Mantis?! Get a free megasphere from me, badass cover and also just an excellent album all-around, unfortunately it doesn't get enough love.

I found Switzerland to be very meh. Wished they sent Coroner instead. Croatia and Netherlands (if they weren't disqualified) would have made for far better winners IMO. But the biggest crime of the night was Norway being dead last, completely undeserved.

Yeah, Finland were along the Ireland the most "out there" performances. For anyone curious to see it:

Another year, another Eurovision... Unfortunately for me there is still no thrash around (some idiot journalist called a glam song last year thrash and I've ever since wanted to see it in the contest). Truth be told, didn't really enjoy any of the songs themselves. Eurovision ain't exactly known for the quality of most of their songs, as we all know. Still, my country qualified for the final and I am happy about that. Lets see if we don't end up at the bottom of the table again! But yeah, I watch the show mostly because of the performances, they're very weird and entertaining. In fact, it's thanks to one of those that I'm even making this post in the first place. Ireland had this really cinematic pagan-influenced crazy nonsense going on: This is already insane by itself, but what really cracked me up and made me laugh my ass off and want to share this are the comments. There's a shit ton of people calling it "satanic", "scary", "not art at all" and saying "Eurovision should remove this!". All this thanks to a really soft and innocuous pop song. I want so badly to show these people a black metal music video now...
