I feel happy to have finally released my tutorial for absolute beginners. There are still some parts that need to be fixed or edited, but it's something that's already on the works. I really hope it helps new mappers, as I tried to be as thorough as I could with the concepts.

Season 10 of ONEMANDOOM: How ERKATANE Stole X-Mas (June 29th, 2015 - December 22nd, 2015)
Season 10 kicked off with Dark Side of Deimos and includes among other things a review of the massive and excellent 32in24-14 megaWAD as well as Sunlust which has since eclipsed Hell Revealed as Voted Most Likely to Be Inappropriately Recommended to Newbies. It's a big run of 2015 releases, capped off with hacking my way through Paul's back catalogue at the tail end in an effort to flesh out less-explored classics. And, uh, watch out for the review of The Rebirth, which is snuck in right after 32in24-14. This season is, to me, a bittersweet remembrance due to the vitriol surrounding the 2015 Cacowards. I was and to some extent still am disillusioned with the community.

Season 11 kicked off with my review of the ubiquitous Xaser recc, The Beginning of the End (Part 1). The direction of the first half of the year was largely driven by first an interest in digging into Torm's Doomja Vu contest and later a desire to start playing through Chris Hansen's career as part of a build toward 2002: A Doom Odyssey. This is interspersed with 2015 hangovers, 2016 hopefuls (including Romero's Tech Gone Bad and Phobos Mission Control!), and a playthrough of both OG Doom as well as E4.

Season 13 kicked off with my review of the level Don't Drink the Water. This period of reviews is almost exclusively dedicated toward covering the WADographies of the folks involved with Doomworld's Top 10 WADs of 2001 (specifically Kurt Kesler, Ed Cripps, Russell Pearson, Fredrk Johansson, Rex Claussen, and Tommie Quick). The sole exception is my review of the absolutely fantastic No End In Sight. I lost my way while I was playing through The Inquisitor 3, largely due to work / life balance and looking at what I had committed myself to in with regards to the community, and went on an extended hiatus / withdrew from the Cacowards so that I could recharge and return with a better self-perspective.

not gonna post this in the Micro Slaughter Community Project thread because I don't like derails, but this is not meant to be a giant subtweet, just a bit of explanation of my previous comment on how "micro slaughter" is a thing that exists.
some works in the genre:
- phmlspd, Fruit Salad, Rush
- Water Spirit, Oceanside
- Survive in Hell
- the slaughtermaps in sets like Plutonium Winds
- (a bunch of standalones like) Brown & Red and Caco Bell
- the New Gothic series is more small than big, especially movement 2. notable CPs like the Slaughterfest series and Slaughtermax have as many smaller slaughtermaps as big ones, especially in the earlier parts, where there is a deliberate skew.
- including speedmaps, like three-quarters of my own maps going back to 2015 are consciously "microslaughter" so I personally know it's not a new thing ;)
- they are super common as entries in community projects, e.g. when Cannonball maps for Doom 2, it's often in that form; 50 Shades of Graytall have a lot. then there are almost ubiquitous one-offs in other works, like BTSX e1m32.
(this not an exhaustive list)
(and not everything in that list is completable in 5 minutes, but that is an arbitrary benchmark and I'm not going to endorse retroactively classifying something differently because it takes 6 minutes.)
so yeah, I'd get why someone who is mostly familiar with slaughter in the form of Sunder and Bastion of Chaos and such would think the idea of "smaller slaughter maps" is especially new or unusual. but I don't like the idea of suggesting it is or selling that angle, because that effectively minimizes (heh) and effaces a lot of past work in the genre.
also the typical "big" slaughtermap, for example Combat Shock 2 or the not-quite-as-short parts of the Slaughterfests and Slauightermax, has generally been more like 20-30 minutes long than a huge Sunderian epic anyway.
one thing that MSCP does is offer more of it; apart from a few (phmlspd, Rush, Survive in Hell, Italo Doom), having a dozen and a half smaller slaughtermaps in a project, and pretty much nothing else, is unusual. and I think that sort of dedicated distillation of concept, paired with the quantity, can be thought of as relatively novel. the first five wads on the big list above are generally quite a bit easier than MSCP, so I'd consider them better "soft intros" to the form for newcomers, but MSCP works as a spicy and short trial by fire.

I've mentioned here before that some years ago I invented a way to construct a moving subway, able to carry a player between two different stations. This was way before the introduction of polyobject-portals to the Eternity Engine, and an even longer time before the inclusion of ACS.
It worked by switching portal views. The actual cars and stations were connected by non-euclidean linked portals and didn't move at all. Anchored (visual-only) portals were connected to door ceilings, which as those raised or closed would reveal or obscure the linked portal and instead show a different view.
With the gates to the platform closed, a player would see the view of a standard polyobject dummy train arriving to its current station. The gates would open, revealing the in-game cars. If boarded and once the gates closed again, a different set of anchored portals would show the view of the subway departing the copied-as-polyobject station, and the destination station slowly approaching. This worked in multiplayer too; even sound cues were linked to the correct portalgroups so as to only be heard when in the appropriate in-game location.
In short: a perfect illusion. Well, "was", because I'm currently removing it.
It's all going to be replaced with a bog-standard moving polyobject-portal construction. Technically it's the right thing to do, since the result would look exactly the same as what I had before minus this very complicated setup. But it still pains me to replace it, since I was so proud of this trick. It feels like inventing mikoconveyors way back in 1997, only to be superseded by Boom's standard conveyor feature before you could show your achievement to the world.
Still, let's show off this trick. Here's the subway arriving at your station:
Now ready to board:
Subway 'leaves' with you onboard, seeing the (polyobject) station receding:
Almost arriving at your destination:
Once disembarked, watch the subway go about its return trip.

Doom the Way id Did: The Lost Episodes by various authors (review posted 08/31/19)
Doom the Way id Did had the community in a fervor, attempting to make levels in the styles of Romero, Hall, and Petersen. Many of the castoffs were collected into this megaWAD. It's full of classically-oriented action with a few twists here and there as things diverge from "id-like" design. Its infamous post-production period got it a Mordeth Award as well as a few new definitely-not-id outings.
