  1. -Symphony of the Night isn't that good. It's not as good as the Aria of Sorrow or the DS Castlevanias, and it doesn't hold a candle to Super Metroid. -Capcom makes better 2D Zeldas than Nintendo does. I really wish they got to try their hand at a 3D one.
  2. Same as any horror, depends on the execution. It's not something that scares me though, so I'm more drawn to darkly comedic takes of it than stuff trying to be outright scary.
  3. Not really. At least with the big ones (unreal and unity) it's not super hard to transfer your skills. Like, there is a learning curve, but if you're dedicated enough to learn one tool and make a career out of it it's not a huge effort to learn a new engine as there is a decent amount of crossover. Not to mention you can make pretty much anything with those engines anyway.
  4. I don't get hyped anymore for a lot of the same reasons you mentioned. It's hard when trends seem to stay in vogue for longer than they have before. It's hard when you've seen disappointment after disappointment. It's hard when the industry seems hell bent on treating the people who make games so disgustingly. It's hard when the discourse surrounding games is so toxic, and people are monetarily incentivized to be as negative as humanly possible about everything. At this point, I don't get hyped by events. I get hyped by a friend telling me about something cool.
  5. I don't play new wads with gameplay mods. When trying out a gameplay mod, I go back to a past wad I liked and think it will suit.
  6. Give it a shot. You don't have to share them if you don't like, but you might enjoy it. It's surprisingly easy. Half of it is just drawing shapes. The program measures stuff for you, you can easily draw a rectangle or circle with the press of a button, or use the stair builder to easily come up with more complex geometry. I've currently got 11 released maps under my belt, so I'm still a newbie, but I have another 8 finished maps on my hard drive that belong to various solo projects I'm working on and about half a million half finished maps and random ideas sitting on my hard drive.
  7. My fav song is probably Get out the Car by Aesop Rock. Gets me every time:
  8. No eyebrows raised here. I made this post with the hopes there'd be some less popular picks as you get an idea of someone's taste better than just seeing the same popular wads. Also it's awesome you managed to get some Heretic on there. Every time there was an awesome Heretic wad there was one Doom wads just above it for me. If I let myself have two runners up there'd be a lot more Heretic lol.
  9. Simple question. -You get one fav for each year and one runner up. -Generally, go based on the year it was would have received a Cacoward. For example: Eviternity came out 2018 but was too late for that years cacowards so it's a 2019 release. -Spoiler your list so this thread isn't a nightmare to navigate. For me, I first got into playing through Brutal Doom in 2012 but didn't start playing megawads until 2018. Still, I'm going with the 2012 date as it gives me more to work with, so my list would like this:
  10. Mechanically it's pretty shallow, but it does exploration and atmosphere really well.
  11. I actually just made a list of about 60 hidden gems I've played over the years with descriptions of each in the notes. They are almost all modern indie games too!
  12. My original comment is probably just going to be used to fuel further bad faith arguments and I doubt you're "genuinely curious."
  13. Depends what mood I'm in. Sometimes I want a short popcorn maps like in Scythe 2. Sometimes I want challenging combat puzzles like in Swim With the Whales. Sometimes I want to go on an adventure with maps like those found in Epic 2. I think for me more than anything its about atmosphere. If a mapper nails the tone they're going for I'll probably like it. The only maps I tend to not vibe with are maps that rehash the themes of the original games - but even then there are exceptions. I love Abscission and Base Ganymede. Straight nostalgia bait doesn't do it for me though, I guess because I didn't grow up with the IWADS and don't have as strong a fondness for them as others do.
  14. I make a room. I work out how combat works for that room. When room is fun to play, I make another room. At the end, I connect them all, open some stuff up, balance, and pretend I had a plan the whole time.
