Yeah, I saw this unfold on Twitter earlier today. I used to frequent The Escapist website over a decade ago when I was first introduced to Yahtzee's series in 2011. I loved his videos (and consequently his books) and the other contributors back then like Jim Sterling, MovieBob (before he lost his mind), and LoadingReadyRun and used to regularly read all their articles and comics too. After the website was first bought out by Gamurs Group in 2015 and pushed away just about all my other favourite contributors, Yahtzee was all I had left, and I just stopped visiting the site over time and watched his videos on YouTube instead. Over the the last 5 years especially, I watched The Escapist become a shambling corpse, losing relevance and clinging to Zero Punctuation for dear life; take a gander at the view disparity between Zero Punctuation and literally any other video they've uploaded to YouTube in the past year alone, you'll see what I mean.
They had that slight upwind a few years ago when they poured more resources into more video content and producing quite a few new shows with good production value, but now they've fucked it all up completely. From what I understand now, the then current and now former editor-in-chief, Nick was essentially fired for not meeting Gamur's unrealistic expectations regarding how much video content they could reasonably produce in a short period of time and chase YouTube's fickle algorithm. Here's what Nick had to say about it on Discord:
That's right, kids. After Nick was fired for idiotic reasons, the entire video team all quit as a sign of solidarity, which consequently included the very man who was still making The Escapist any money at all. OOPS! Now the former video team are off to probably build their own little media company with blackjack and hookers or find opportunities elsewhere. While I am a little sad to see Zero Punctuation end rather abruptly, it was done with good cause and with all his success in writing and video game development, Yahtzee had been in a, "You need me more than I need you" scenario with The Escapist for almost half of his career anyways. We had a good run, ZP fans. 16 years worth of knob jokes!
Now if you'll all excuse me, I need to go and download all 800 Zero Punctuation videos before Gamur Group deletes the channel.
