The hokuto no doom guy made a really impressive recreation of the Metz cathedral that's supposedly vanilla-compatible.

What did you think about Doom 2016/ Doom Eternal?
I Drink Lava replied to rescue86k's topic in Doom Eternal
Yep, that's Doom Eternal. The game was deliberately designed this way in order to make players use more than one weapon. The game doesn't really take off until Cultist Base when you get the Rocket Launcher and Super Shotgun. I definitely recommend you learn how to quick-switch between weapons. If you fire a weapon and press the hotkey for another weapon while holding the fire button down, it'll automatically fire the next weapon when it switches out. The Precision Bolt was made for this. Learn to quick-scope (press right mouse button then fire right before the scope overlay appears) and you'll get the hang of the combat loop. Of course, if you don't like the limited ammo, you could either install Cheat Engine or the Doom mod injector and use the unlocked console command g_ammoscalar to adjust the ammo as you see fit. The more fanatical side of the Doom following might heap hate on you for this, but don't let them bother you. Enjoy the game however you want. -
Assuming that the OP means "ranking the shotguns in the entire Doom series" and not some shitpost nonsense, the ranking order is pretty obvious. Fuck it, I'll add the Quake, Wolfenstein, and Rage shotguns too just to make up for the rest of this thread.

there's a solution to this, it's called stop using gzdoom for everything and use PRBoom-Plus for limit-removing or boom-compatible maps -
redpilotsun Most people know him as funny garfielf meme video man or the "Oh I'm on the weird side of Youtube again" guy but honestly, his original background music is oddly satisfying to listen to and is the real star of his various works. I've heard it compared to Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada, and I do hear some resemblance. On a post-mortem note, I'd say Jun Fukamachi (1946-2010). He started out as a pretty damn good Jazz Fusion piano player and keyboardist in the 1970s before moving on to more experimental electronic ambient stuff in the 1980s that usually mixed some piano work in. He's had a bit of resurgence in popularity due to the Youtube algorithms and the pandemic. I definitely think more people will discover this man's talent as time goes on and he'll finally get the credit he deserves. Quark alone deserves to be mentioned in the same sentence as Vangelis, Wendy Carlos, and Isao Tomita.

How would you want a future Quake title to look and play?
I Drink Lava replied to Man of Doom's topic in Everything Else
Not to dismiss your question or anything but hearing these quotes and knowing Hugo's interests, I wouldn't be surprised if the next ID Software game was an original IP that involved giant mechs. I for one would definitely love to see a new mech game with the visceral feedback and satisfying combat that ID is always known for. As for the Quake thing, I dunno...Quake Champions' engine and assets but with actual PvE? -
For those who did not think TAG 2 was hard enough
I Drink Lava replied to Hunting4r2d2's topic in Doom Eternal
This is cool, but are they going to remove it now that people have found it? They seem to like doing that with their easter eggs, which kind of defeats the point of having easter eggs in the first place. -
Give it some time for the circlejerk to die off. Doom 2016 had the same effect for the first couple years, now look at how people react to it in 2021. It had its share of idiotic video essays at the time too, mostly from COD gamers who never played a Doom game or anything else like it before. It also had its share of haters, too, like the DWTerminator review that spent 35 minutes trashing the game for not literally being Doom II with HD graphics. The only reason it seems more prevalent with Eternal is because Eternal had, what, double the sales of Doom 2016?

Recent(ish) interviews with Hugo Martin about Eternal
I Drink Lava replied to MattFright's topic in Doom Eternal
I feel that the root of this might be hubris. Hugo thinks too highly of his own game design capabilities to admit that ideas like the 2016 Double Trouble or Siege Mode were mistakes that should've been left on the drawing board. Even with the Sentinel Hammer, he seems to just brush criticisms off and find ways around acknowledging its design flaws. To be fair, you do need somewhat of an inflated ego to be able to make a game where you play as the world's coolest, most unstoppable badass. To that end, I don't think Hugo is anywhere near as bad as George Broussard or post-Quake John Romero were. I suppose the other aspect might be NDAs and other corporate interference. He can't really go that in-depth into the various mechanics that run under Doom Eternal's hood without risking details leaked that could jeopardize ID Software and its parent corporations. Hence the endless repetitive "race car" or "skate park" analogies in his livestreams. In the Doom 2016 vs Eternal interview he also conveniently dodges questions about his "favorite" video essay or whether he took any inspiration from New Blood's games. -

This is probably the biggest point of contention re: SSG balancing, and to that end I say the PvE balance is nothing at all like PvP balance. The Super Shotgun is clearly the dominant weapon after the BFG9000 in Deathmatch because it deals Rocket-tier damage with hitscan tracers against opponents moving at 43MPH. I think this is where ID Software improved with Quake, where the avg. player speed in PvP was generally decreased and the projectile speed was made much, much faster to the point where you could accurately use the Rocket Launcher and Plasma Rifle in PvP. There's also the Railgun and Lightning Gun that give players even stronger hitscan weapons to kill with at the expense of their high accuracy requirements. -

Thanks for the heads up. Years of being on the internet has ruined my perception of certain words. I see "hetero" and "dox" next to each other and my mind goes to a very different place. -

It's hard for casuals and first-time players, but easy by the modern Doom community's standards. It's like comparing Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels with any ROM hacks or Mario Maker levels. -

It's literally the in-between point between the basic starting weapons and the power weapons, giving players a quick way to kill the more dangerous enemies in Doom 2 that uses the most common ammo type at the expense of its pitiful range. The workhorse weapon, so to speak. I assume this misconception comes from mods like Brutal Doom or the horrible weapon balancing in Doom 2016 that make the Super Shotgun OP as shit with little to no drawbacks. -

I've beaten Mega Man X1 with boots last twice, once on a buster-only run and once with an obscure debug password I saw on GameFAQs many years ago that started you in the intro stage with all weapons and immediately made Sigma's Fortress accessible afterwards. It's possible to beat the 7 other Mavericks without the boots, but it's extremely difficult--harder than anything in classic Mega Man. It's so blatantly obvious that the game was designed around the dash since you need pixel-perfect precision and frame-perfect jumps otherwise. Storm Eagle is actually one of the easier ones. It's getting to the end of the stage that's the difficult part. As long as you stand right next to Storm Eagle as he starts pushing you off the platform, you'll just barely make it.

You know, in all the years I've seen people discuss Mega Man X on the internet, I have not once seen anybody else make this point. Thank you for this post. It's been years since I've played a Mega Man title but I remember liking the classic series more. The gameplay loop is simpler but also much more polished when it's done right. X series balancing just feels sloppy for the most part with useless weapons, overpowered enemies, and collectathon/good ending requirements that ruin the flow of the game. Mega Man X1 is the only one that feels "right" and it still forces you into one boss order with the Chill Penguin boots upgrade unless you deliberately game over. I've grown to dislike the sub-tank health grinding system as well and much prefer the E-tanks from classic Mega Man.

EDIT: I'm reworking this "rocket climbing" feature to be balanced and not allow players to skip so much of the levels. It'll be more of a "rocket glide" if I can find the right values.
