Minimal class inheritance is considered a good practice nowadays, so one could argue that JC was a visionary ;) Unused variables - good point, compilers reported those even in 90s. White space - I am not sure if automated C/C++ formatters existed in 90s, but they certainly existed in 2000s.

What do you think were his bigger mistakes? I'll start with the obvious: 1. Pushing out Romero and other people who disagreed with him. 2. 5 year gap between Quake 3 and Doom 3 releases.

Steam Hexen bundle lacks Portal of Praevus too. I played Heretic 2 demo on release and did not like it. I prefer FPP games.

BTW, why did Raven change the name from Heretic to Hexen? Is it true that the third game in the series was supposed to have yet another name?

The Wastelands level in the second hub seems to have inspired the Outlands map in Quake 2.

Is it normal that Hexen does not have official secrets in maps (aside from a secret level per hub) or is it a GZDoom oddity?

I have played all Carmack era id Software games with the exception of Rage. Is the game any good? Does racing play a significant part?

Which single player FPS maps do you consider the best? Some of my picks: - Not surprisingly, Doom E1M1 - a short and sweet demonstration of engine's capabilities - Doom 3 - Delta Complex - I like the idea of combining elements of Delta levels 1, 2, and 3 into a single map. In general I like the concept of revisiting older locations altered by plot or players actions - it gives a sense of continuity - Duke Nukem 3D - Death Row - I love the idea of escaping from an electric chair, the submarine at the end and references to Doom and Shawshank Redemption - Dark Forces - Robotics Facility - first encounter with a Dark Trooper, great visuals outside and inside, slippery icy surface (a first in FPS history?)

GZDoom it is. Three questions: - are teleporting enemies scripted to appear as the puzzles are solved or simply spawned randomly or by a timer? - do I remember correctly that DOS Hexen run in a resolution slightly higher than Doom's 320x200 (VGA)? - do you recommend any graphics mods?

I enjoyed Doom 3 more than Doom 2.

I have never played SoD, but I have recently seen a play-trough on YT. At the end of an episode the player finds the titular spear and the bunker is transformed into a hellish maze: skulls replace swastikas on blue walls, brown stone walls are replaced with red stone adorned with occasional bones and the angel of death turns out to be a demon throwing green projectiles - sounds familiar? It appears that some of the ideas for Doom originated in the middle of 1992, over one year before Doom release. BTW, does anyone know how this was implemented in the engine? Is the hellish level technically a different map, or does the engine support swapping textures on the fly?

Thank you for all your responses, I can finally respond as my post limit was reset after 24 hours since registration. By "close to vanilla" I mean no gameplay changes (hence no Brutal Hexen). Mouselook and GPU rendering are a must.

Now that we have seen drastic improvements in graphics over last 3 decades, what technical limitations are left in FPS engines that are yet to be overcome?

Hate to admit, but I never completed Hexen in the DOS era (unlike Heretic). What is the best way to play it nowadays? Which source port, any graphics mods? I want the experience to be close to vanilla on my first play-through, so no Brutal Hexen for now.
